BMW kicks off production of the new i3 EV
The Germans at BMW officially announced that the all-new i3 electric vehicle just entered the assembly line at the Leipzig plant. The BMW i3 was unveiled at a special event before it made an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
It is joined by the BMW i8 hybrid sports car which will also enter production in the coming months. The all-electric BMW i3 is powered by an electric motor producing 170 horses for a 0-100 km/h sprint in 7,2 seconds.
BMW estimates a driving range of 160 kilometers from a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery while a range-extending engine is also available.
In order to accommodate the production for the BMW i3, the Bavarian company had to invest 400 million and hire 800 new employees.
If the German model is on your wishlist, you have to know that the European market will get the model starting November this year with starting prices of €34,950 or £25,680. Other countries such as China or United States will have to wait until 2014.
