The London Fire Brigade recently said goodbye to the Vauxhall Astras and welcomed the newly received batch of BMW i3 electric vehicles with the REx option as well, contributing thus to a more friendly environment.

All models will be used as rapid response vehicles by commanders and officers within the LFB in different missions, the models being extremely fast and arriving faster from one side of town to another.

As we can depict from the video below, the BMW i3s are equipped with the red and yellow liveries, LFB emblem, sirens and blue lights.

They also use the range-extender engines which rechargers the car`s lithium-ion battery on the go. The BMW i3 uses a 7.4 kW lithium-ion battery which allows a range of 114 miles. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is done in 6.5 seconds.

The LFB was able to acquire the BMW i3 because it is part of the UK government`s Go Ultra Low campaign, an explicit campaign that encourages state or private companies to purchase low-emissions vehicles.

It is also known, that not only the London Fire Brigade has taken its share of the BMW i3, the New York or Detroit Fire Brigade also purchasing the gorgeous BMW i3.

After rumors and renderings which announced the arrival of the BMW i5, Car and Driver auto magazine has recently launched a report according to which the model would arrive somewhere in 2020.

The famous auto publication stated that the BMW i5 would be a pure electric car and not the company`s second plug-in hybrid, as previously stated. A range-extender internal-combustion mill would also join the club.

BMW has also confirmed the news: “The range-extender plays an important part in the next years when range remains a limiting factor and a source of anxiety. Of course, once we get to a range that is more comparable with that of an internal-combustion engine it will become obsolete. So this is the reason I can say we will continue to offer the range-extender in the future as optional equipment, to address different customer needs.”

The carmaker`s third ”i” model would stand on a new platform, called flat battery storage assembly, or FSAR, meaning that it will come as a crossover with a carbon-fiber structure. The same BMW also mentioned that its plans is ”to attract families, and that means it must be capable of being the first car in the household.”

”Currently if you compare those figures and see what kind of energy investment is behind it, you often see the total carbon footprint of those models is higher than for a car with an internal-combustion engine. That doesn’t make any kind of sense,” the carmaker also concluded.

The BMW i3 has been recently introduced in China, where the great electric car will be priced from $73,000 or the equivalent of 449,800 CNY.

The BMW i3 electric will not come cheap in China, as it is considered to be a premium model, with the vehicle to come with a $42,300 price in the US, including the destination fee.

In China, the BMW i3 will cost even more, due to the handling and destination charges, but the company foresees high sales in the Asian country.

To be a reminder, the BMW i3 electric was first launched last year, being manufactured in Leipzig, Germany, being designed by Richard Kim and becoming the first “green” i model from the carmaker.

The BMW i3 is an extraordinary city car, coming with a five-door hatchback body, while under the hood, it packs a rear-engine and a rear-wheel drive system.

We are talking about an electric motor, which outputs a great 250 Nm of torque, hooked to a single-speed transmission, while the 650cc two-cylinder petrol range extender, provides an additional of 34 horsepower.

Now that the BMW i3 vehicle is already reaching the US dealerships in short orders, the car has yet to reveal more details concerning its high-tech tweaks.

The BMW i3 in the US will be offered with a plug-in choice, coming with a range extender alongside a 1.9-gallon capacity gas tank.

This is rather the smaller version option, since in Europe, the BMW i3 comes with a 2.4-gallon tank, but other than that, the versions are rather the same.

The entire range extender system, meaning the tank, the engine, adds an additional 265 pounds to the i3 EV`s overall 2,634-pound curb weight.

The extra weight in turn adds around a second to the EV`s 0 to 60 mileage, which is rated at 7 seconds. With all that, the range-extender will not make the Americans pay the $7,500 tax credit as previously imposed by the US government.

Other important details about the i3 is that the vehicle`s storage compartment “is not watertight” as it is designed to hold the mobility kit or the 110-volt charging cord.

In Europe, the BMW German based luxury automaker has already exceeded 70 units a day, reaching a total number of around 100, due to the higher and higher demands.
