BMW returns to Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) from 2012

According to Mario Theissen, the head of the BMW’s Motorsport division, BMW will return the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) in 2012, after 18 years out of the competition. BMW will compete against the eternal German rivals in the premium cars segment, Audi and Mercedes.

Hans Werner Aufrecht, the man behind the DTM competition but also behind AMG stated that BMW will be a serious rival in this competition too, as the German manufacturer worked on this in the last time. A member of BMW AG, more exactly Dr. Klaus Draeger, stated that the DTM competition is the perfect environment to exhibit the performance and the feature of BMW’s models.

For the comeback, the Germans at BMW plan to use a modified version based on the M3 model, a version to fit the DTM competition’s rules. Mario Theissen claimed also that a development process for a supercar to be used in DTM was started since April, when they showed the intetion to return this competition.
