Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there were two special rides that dominated the racing segment, and those two German models were no other than the BMW E30 M3 Sport Evo and the Mercedes-Benz 190 Evolution, both coming with some powerful characteristics under the hood.

Now, the question that rises is which one would you choose for your own fun and driving pleasure or just for some thrilling spin around the tracks? Before taking a subjective decision, let`s have a look at each car`s main specifications.

To start with the E30 BMW M3 Sport Evo, the model looks gorgeous, a real German engineering of the time, coming with an appealing yet aggressive design, highlighted by a powerful engine under the hood. Besides looking in pristine condition, this lad here also comes with some slight mods, like custom steering wheel and aluminium pedals courtesy of AC Schnitzer.

Speaking about performance, the M3 Sport Evo packs a 2.5-liter I4 engine, which replaces the original 2.3-liter mill. This means that it develops 238 horsepower and allows a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, achieved via a five-speed manual transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz 190 Evolution II is another iconic model of the 1990s, the model coming with advanced aerodynamics and a futuristic design ahead its time. Unfortunately, it is heavier than the BMW which means that the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is done in 7.1 seconds. Also, it takes its power from a 2.5-liter flat-four engine, good for 235 horsepower. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual as well.

Having that said, both models will be available for sale at Silverstone Auction`s Classic Motor Show starting this November, both models having a starting price of around £100,000. It is now up to you to decide which one is best fit for your needs!

BMW is on a full swing with its new models to be tested out before their official unveiling at the end of the year or in 2017.

Lately, another high-end model was put to new tests, and judging by the images below, this one is no other than the upcoming 2017 G30 BMW 5-Series, the model standing in a garage with robots swirling around, in what seems to be new tests.

In case you were wondering what`s with all the fuss, the Bavarian carmaker is using robots to perform some tests which are part of a new technology called Optical Measuring Cell. It refers to a more accurate technology in building the car`s body structure and other components using robots.

Eduard Obst, Head of Geometric Analysis, Measuring Technology and Cubing, Total Vehicle, better explains the technology:

“We are delighted to reach this genuine milestone in preproduction with the optical measuring cell: A single measurement provides us with a 3D model of the total vehicle. Lengthy individual measurements and data collation are no longer needed – saving time and enhancing quality at the start of series production”.

The technology allows robots to use sensors in order to create a 3D data model of the vehicle, coming as well with an accuracy of less than 100 microns. And once the data is collected, this “allows barely visible deviations to be identified at an early stage”, resulting a more accurate process and less consuming time in building a much more efficient and higher-quality product.

The final result will be observed and admired at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, which opens its gates in September.

Three German based automaker are claiming the crown of the overall sales, concerning the premium segment, with the Audi and the Mercedes-Benz carmakers to follow the top leader BMW, by just an inch.

The two luxury German carmakers are quickly and closely following BMW, as the latter is only showing a sales increase of around 10%, with 1.03 million cars, for last seven months.

The second place is taken by the Audi carmaker, with the company to grow its seven-month sales by 11%, meaning 1.01 million units to be sold.

From the third place, the Mercedes-Benz only managed to increase its deliveries for the same seven-month period by 13%, meaning 920,000 units sold.

But right now, the differences between the three uncrowned kings is extremely low and BMW will have to reflect on the gaps that are filled up by Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Overall percentage, we are talking about an increase of 77,000 units in 2014 for BMW, 101,000 cars to be sold by Audi, while the Mercedes-Benz managed to sell around 100,000 units, compared to the same period last year.

The BMW Group has been a top constant presence on the premium market worldwide, providing the best vehicles and it seems that 2014 is also a lucky number for the German automaker, as it still keeps the first place.

The BMW German based luxury automaker has just announced that last month the company managed to have record sales, with an overall 85% over the same period last year.

Thus, for the first quarter of 2014, the BMW manufacturer was ahead its competitors with around 11%, over the same period in 2013, reaching a total production of 569,100 units to be manufactured.

BMW managed the record sales due to the boost of the SUV lineup worldwide, like the X1, X3 and also the X5 range.

Ian Robertson, the sales chief at BMW stated in a press release that the German Group managed to have record sales in April, heading towards its plans of selling more than 2 million units for 2014.

With all that, the BMW Group must keep its head up, since the menace from the heavy competitors like Audi and Mercedes-Benz is still going on fast paces.

The BMW is struggling to become the number one German automaker in the United States, against its tough competitors coming from the same country, namely Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

The plans involve building another factory in Mexico as well as manufacturing the US aimed models, in order to keep up with the demand.

The BMW automaker lost the battle for the US last year against Mercedes-Benz, which managed to bit up the company with 98,501 units to be sold from January to April.

Thus, the BMW lost with just 922 cars, with Audi coming in third place, with only 50,881 units sold for the same period.

On the other hand, BMW managed to sell 25,202 vehicles for the SUV and mid-size sedan markets, having an increase of 8.5% in April 2013.

The battle is still undergoing, as Daimler managed to pull record sales for the same period, with 25,887 vehicles sold, reaching thus an increase of 9.5%, due to the CLA models.

This year, BMW has changed its tactics, with number sales for the first quarter to be announced soon. We should expect a turn-over.

The Brazilian auto market is hitting the bucket bottom, after being one of the most flourishing market in the world.

With all that, even if the situation seems to be getting just like in Europe, the BMW German based auto maker still holds pretty tight, since the premium segment “is growing as tax incentives” lead to cars being more affordable.

Alongside the BMW manufacturer stands the Mercedes-Benz automaker as well, with the premium segment being also a neglected situation.

Thus, we might be talking a 32% growth in the luxury car market, with the two automakers building local plants and thus benefiting from tax breaks on their imported models.

Arturo Pineiro, CEO at BMW Brazil states that the company has made the decision of investing even more in Brazil, as the country is a stable ground for the upcoming sales in the country.

BMW will be investing around 200 million euros in the first Brazilian plant, which would begin production late this year.

Mercedes-Benz will follow its direct competitor with an investment of 500 million euros for their new plant in Sao Paulo.

The classic rivalry between the Mercedes-Benz and BMW doesn’t stop not even when it comes to servicing programs being launched everywhere in the world.

Perhaps the DriveNow car-sharing service program being launched ahead by BMW is a counterattack of the Daimler`s newly announced Car2go sharing service to debut in Rome. Thus, the BMW is planning to launch the service in 10 US cities and 15 new cities in Europe.

The DriveNow car-sharing program will involve the Mini Cooper and the 1 Series in 15 European cities, with the program being already active mostly in German, namely in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Munich or Dusseldorf, as well as in the US, in San Francisco.

San Francisco was actually the last city for the BMW to run the DriveNow program, as it was quite problematic in delivering the number of the cars, with the so little space for public parking areas to manage when renting a car.

The DriveNow porgram charges a membership fee of $39 in San Francisco, another half-hour fee of $12 and 32 cents for each minute past.

On the other hand, its rival Car2go, charges a membership fee of $25 along with 41 cents per each minute past time to rent a SmartForTwo.

It is said that cars with small engines lead to improve fuel economy, but on the other hand, the process itself lead to a serious of problems that might affect the overall car`s engineering.

It is actually the synopsis of a J.D. Power vehicle-dependability study, leading to a serious of statements saying that dependability has severely dropped for the first time in 16 years.

Vehicles to be affected by this phenomenon are less reliable because of the proliferation of their four-cylinder engines.

The problems concern a number of vehicle starting with the 2011 model-year with a rousing of six percent from the year-earlier figures.

The issues are associated with engine hesitation, rough transmission shifting and also lack of power, all subjected to the engines` efforts of struggling for a better fuel economy.

Among the brands of the car, the BMW`s Mini sub-brand was the least reliable, with 185 problems per 100 vehicles for the last year. Then follows the Toyota`s Lexus with 68 problems per 100 vehicles.

The second place is won by Mercedes-Benz with an overall of 133 problems.

According to the 6th annual Automotive News Europe/SupplierBusiness OEM-Supplier Relations Study the Bavarians at BMW AG are the automaker that most suppliers want to do business with.

This new survey shows that BMW rose to the top spot which if you consider that last year it ranked fifth.

VW was found to be the carmaker that applies the most pressure to drop the prices. BMW is trailed by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen brand.

Toyota was the winner last year but due to the impact of the over 8.5 million vehicles being recalled over safety risks such as unintended acceleration and poor braking.

BMW’s feat of rising to the top can be seen as quite a turnaround. BMW has been slipping in this category since 2007, which is when BMW head of purchasing Herbert Diess was ordered to cut 4 billion euros the equivalent of $5.7 billion in costs by 2012.

Either way the recent progress at BMW is one that’s quite notable, even despite announcements of them joining forces with Mercedes to keep supplier costs in check. On a sidenote, VW was found to be the carmaker that applies the most pressure to drop the prices.

BMW is the world’s largest luxury automaker, but it may be feeling Audi breathing down it’s neck which is why the Bavarian company announced a massive cost cutting program.

BMW will get some assistance from a partnership with Daimler AG’s, Mercedes-Benz unit, in order to significantly reduce spending on components and suppliers by $5.2 billion by 2012.

Mercedes may be a rival but BMW can’t really afford not to have this pact with the devil as the savings that are to be amounted boggle the mind.

In an interview for Bloomberg Herbert Diess, Director of BMW Motorrad, stated that the talks between BMW and Mercedes-Benz have lead to the creation of new projects over the past several months that will help both companies cut spending by about another 100 million euros a year by 2012.

Efficiency is always a key word within any BMW product and now it will be applied to the brand economy as well, BMW is looking into every cost lowering aspect and they will even be helping component suppliers improve efficiency as well as develop systems, such as start/stop technology, that they may be able to sell to other manufacturers.

It seems that BMW have realized that efficiency cannot be achieved just through high volume of sales and, according to Diess, new projects with Mercedes-Benz will lead to significant savings as well as technical advances.
