With BMW unveiling the latest generation of the X5 midsized luxury SUV more than three months ago, it was just a matter of time until the high-performance plug-in hybrid variant would make its appearance in the range list, thus joining the xDrive40i, xDrive50i and the xDrive30d.

The model in question is the long-expected 2019 X5 xDrive45i iPerformance, which is regarded as one of the most imposing hybrids from BMW`s entire range.

Besides the massive size and extremely appealing design language, the SUV`s main highlight is the hybrid drivetrain under the hood. It`s what makes the variant more powerful and more efficient than the ongoing model released back in 2016.

We are dealing here with a 3.0-liter Twin-Power Turbo six-cylinder petrol engine, paired to an electric motor. The conventional engine outputs 286 horsepower while the electric adds another 110 horsepower. With a total of 388 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, the new X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is now more powerful and more fuel efficient.

The amazing performance figures are also achieved thanks to an eight-speed automatic transmission paired to an all-wheel drive system, which comes standard. Other characteristics will be added later on, like electronically controlled dampers or air suspension.

Speaking of fuel-efficiency, the car`s lithium-ion battery pack allows you to drive the SUV for around 80 km without no fuel and at a top speed of 140 km/h, which is another plus compared with the ongoing model.

As for acceleration, the 2019 BMW X5 iDrive45e iPerformance is also quite impressive. At a top speed of 235 km/h it can hit 100 km/h in an outstanding 5.6 seconds. Again, compared with its predecessor, it`s 1 second faster.

As for its availability on the market, we`ve got some pretty bad news for the US customers, as the model will arrive overseas somewhere in 2020. In Europe however, you will be able to get a taste of the new plug-in hybrid sooner, in early 2019.

The recently unveiled 2017 G30 BMW 5 Series Sedan is considered the latest high-end model to be released on the market, the model coming with exceptional driving dynamics and efficiency. Once it will be unveiled in February and March, next year, the model will be offered in a wide array of versions, each one coming with extraordinary features and performance under the hood; not to mention the latest technology onboard.

The package comes with reduced fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions, increasing the car`s dynamics and driving capabilities. BMW EfficientDynamics package is a complex system which covers the car`s styling, drive system and energy management. They all work hand-in-hand, along with the car`s advanced and lightweight architecture, improving the 5 Series` aerodynamics and engine efficiency. The package also comprises the latest drivetrain technology – the BMW eDrive technology – making the 530e iPerformance, for instance, one of the most fuel-efficient BMW models ever built.

As for the technology that lies underneath the sedan`s skin, this is also an integral part of BMW EfficientDynamics. We are looking here at the latest generation of petrol burners and diesels, all fitted with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, comprising the latest injection system and turbochargers as well as fully variable performance control.

All engines, including the three- and four-cylinders petrol, along with the much more potent six-cylinder mills, prove to be more powerful and fuel-efficient yet lower on CO2 emissions than the previous generation. And that thanks to the BMW EfficientDynamics package, which comprises the latest injection technology and Valvetronic fully variable valve control with double-VANOS and latest turbocharger technology.

Besides the impressive performance figures, reduced fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions, the package also comes with advanced mechanics, such as the Integral Active Steering with the Driving Experience Control, which offers a choice of driving modes – Comfort, Eco Pro and Sport mode – adding the Adaptive Mode which adjusts the car`s Dynamic Damper Control, steering and the Steptronic transmission, increasing thus its driving dynamics and efficiency.

Look around the Internet or the local newspaper stand. Can you find anything there that’s related to EVs without talking about their flaws.

Manufacturers are slowly working out the kinks yet our restless nature keeps telling us it’s not enough. Most of the progress seems minimal.

The Bavarians seem to be pushing the limits of this sluggish movement and the latest announcement they have from their heating department.

I know it sounds like we’re about to talk about something as exciting as plumbing but trust me, this is likely to make a difference.

BMW is now talking about infrared heating technology. It may sound like a bit of a disaster movie but it’s actually a brilliant solution.

Infrared heating works in a much more efficient way, doesn’t require auxiliaries and will ultimately be capable of saving up to 30% charge consumption.

Those who love the silence and overall muted feel of EVs will definitely enjoy the way the infrared panels could provide heat to the interior without fans, air vents or anything of the likes.

BMW’s current idea is to have these infrared panels located in the door panels and the foot wells. This proximity also helps reduce energy wasting.

The real problem with the infrared heaters is that they’re pretty much a pipe dream. BMW is cutting back on development of EVs for the market (though research is going on).

Beyond that no genuine business plan was scraped together for this stuff, which makes us think it’s even further away.

Efficiency has always been at the top of the priority list within the Bavarian manufacturer’s plans but this time they’ve really outdone themselves.

Having looked into the production situation and weighed in what’s going to happen in the future, BMW worked out that it’s workforce is aging.

Since training or getting new employees constantly isn’t an option, they’ve decided to stick by their working class. They are put under the spotlight though.

The favorite Germans of ours started inspecting the efficiency of the slightly aged personal compared to the newer brawn.

All the tests were carried in a non-intrusive manor at BMW’s production line in Dingolfing. The results were, as to be expected, in favor of the youth.

In order to boost the efficiency levels of these worksers BMW then went on and redesigned the work benches in order to adjust for improved mobility in their cases.

Having less risk of repetitive injuries and getting help in lifting things from a crane, the workers started to improve their efficiency.

Interestingly, BMW have noticed that despite the aging body, the extra experience of workers led to them actually being more efficient than the younger folks.

All these testes and experiments were undertaken at BMW’s production line in Dingolfing. However, since the results are so pleasing, the changes will be implemented at other locations as well.

Eventually, BMW will have one of the most efficient work forces in the world, which is not something you’re necessarily going to feel, but dealer stocks might mirror.

A few days after we got properly familiar with the F30 BMW 3 Series, the Bavarians go ahead and introduce this variant which seems considerably more interesting.

It is the the ActiveHybrid version of the lovely compact executive sedan. I love the figures on it and while the fuel economy is important, it’s not the key.

The overall perks of the F30 BMW 3 Series with a hybrid powertrain go well beyond the obvious dimensions of such cars.

Rather remarkably, the F30 BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid is the most powerful version of the car you can have so far.

By mating a 335i’s TwinPower Turbo 3.0 liter inline six cylinder engine with an electric motor the final output goes up to 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

When pushed, the new power team and the eight speed automatic gearbox will get you to the same electronically limited top speed of 155 mph and it can sprint to 60 in just 4.8 seconds.

In a true power crazed stepping over the desire of the smaller people, the big 3 liter high performance 3 Series ActiveHybrid is actually tax exempt in most countries.

Ok, so the F30 hybrid version may be a bit of a poke in the eye for all the politically correct folks but it does actually offer better efficiency and less emissions.

According to the Bavarians, the new version of the car can manage an average of 36.7 mpg on the US cycle and you can drive it on electric power alone for up to 2.5 miles.

The only problem with the F30 BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid is that it has a starting price of $49.300 USD and that’s not including destination.

Given the title of this blog, the most used word on it and the constant praise of a certain brand, one could easily identify us as being BMW fanboys.

Maybe we are, maybe we aren’t, one thing’s certain – we just love it when BMW hits the jackpot in the new cars they come up with.

Alongside the stunning new cars we love, we’re also quite big fans of the news that comes in from the marketing department.

There’s the brand assessment, the sales figures and also the stunning concepts that attract even more fans to Bavaria.

This time however, BMW is attempting to win new fans over with a more traditional approach – advertising. Just have a second look at how the best current models from BMW show off:

I’m not a big fan of cakes. In fact, I lose interest almost completely when it comes to most sweets but the sort of cake these guys are talking about seems yummy.

I wouldn’t mind actually getting some diabetes this way. Heck, I’m actually considering some serious gluttony on the Ultimate Driving Machine.

They may speak a little bit about fuel economy, efficiency and all that lot but with none of the vehicles in the video don’t seem to be focused on that particular aspect.

Do people really buy the F10 BMW M5 for the economy? Or the M6 for that matter? The M3 GTS is a few details short of a racing car too.

The BMW 1M Coupe is probably the only vehicle there that’s decent on the fuel economy numbers but since that’s sold out in the US and quickly going everywhere else, it’s not strictly relevant.

BMW’s involvement with this year’s Olympic games has been announced about two months ago. The Bavarians have even given us a taster on the sort of cars they will be contributing with.

We’re now seeing the followup, this time there’s more cars, more pictures and a few added details just for the fun of it.

The lineup may have expanded but overall, the same environment-oriented choices have been made. No M Division or M Performance products are in the fleet.

That’s not really a bad thing. BMW makes the fun cars but efficiency certainly has a lot going for it these days.

With BMW engineerings expertise on engines being at an all time high, even the fuel sipping diesels make for fun cars to drive.

That’s a good thing, since most of the cars chosen to be part of the special sporting competition is made up of diesels.

The vehicles that are involved with the 2012 Olympic games and don’t burn oil are either electric or hybrids. Here’s a list of everything taking part:

BMW may be looking into giving old school brand enthusiasts yet another heart attack with their latest of announcements.

It would seem like the future of the BMW 3 Series, not sure when but it’s coming up next, would find us looking at a three cylinder engine underneath.

We’re not looking at some rumor or some spoof announcement like the sort we’re getting from Lamborghini, it’s the real deal.

The news comes from BMW’s engine development boss, Peter Nefischer. In an interview for Whatcar he leaked the information in a rather clear way. This wasn’t something accidental.

This probably means that BMW is well into the development of the new engine which will, apparently, be different from the three cylinder in the i8.

That said, the development part isn’t a surprise since the estimates for the new three cylinder powerplant finding way under the bonnet of the 3 Series come in at around two years time.

As we’ve gotten used to lately, in the pursuit of efficiency, the engines are downsized. In the pursuit of keeping performance levels high, forced induction will be employed.

The new three-pot BMW plans to stick in the 3 Series will be turbocharged, just like the rest of the engines under its bonnet.

Figures on fuel economy, pricing and such haven’t even been mentioned but what I suppose you should have in mind is the sort of stuff the BMW 316i offered not that long ago.

It would be very interesting to see what kind of turbocharging method BMW will use for their three cylinder engine since they will want to make it as smooth as possible.

Since the brand new F30 BMW 3 Series is the star of the moment and we’ve already covered its unveiling and taken a closer look at the interior, why not focus on something more important in a BMW; the engines.

Under the bonnet of the 2012 BMW 3 Series we find a series of capable yet efficient engines, that are, remarkably, not newly designed powerplants.

At the moment, the petrol powered end of the BMW 3 Series consists of the N20 twin-turbo 2.0 liter four cylinder engine whereas the top end retains the E90’s single turbo 3.0 liter straight six we know as the N55.

The N20 engine may be the entry level option but it is the star of the show. This has something to do with how it’s a new engine to the BMW 3 Series as opposed to a refreshed version of an old one but there’s more.

Sticking to familiar model designations, the BMW 320 and the BMW 328 will be powered by the N20 with final outputs of quite a varied response (at a later time).

A 2012 BMW 328i and its same engine to find that this time it develops 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft again available from silky smooth nearly off idle you find yourself ready to define what is the joy of BMW.

The same can be said of the already familiar and multi award winner N55 3.0 liter turbocharged powerplant that develops 306 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Diesel fans will see themselves have few options at first too as only the 320ed and 320d will have been available on launch and they serve up considerable torque levels and fuel economy at the trade off of horsepower.

If oil burning is your choice, you can only have 165 or 185 horsepower but you can still look forward to a different world, that of the hybrid.

The F30 BMW 3 Series will eventually be available in ActiveHybrid form where it will have electricity and batteries help with the fuel economy levels along side the 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six.

Further engine options expected to come in over the following years and we will see the F30 BMW 3 Series’s bonnet open up to include more efficient 316d and 318d models as well as a more powerful six cylinder diesel.

It’s all very nice to talk about efficiency and diesels but the engine all BMW await is the three turbo powerplant they’ll use in the F30 M3.

BMW is the world’s largest luxury automaker, but it may be feeling Audi breathing down it’s neck which is why the Bavarian company announced a massive cost cutting program.

BMW will get some assistance from a partnership with Daimler AG’s, Mercedes-Benz unit, in order to significantly reduce spending on components and suppliers by $5.2 billion by 2012.

Mercedes may be a rival but BMW can’t really afford not to have this pact with the devil as the savings that are to be amounted boggle the mind.

In an interview for Bloomberg Herbert Diess, Director of BMW Motorrad, stated that the talks between BMW and Mercedes-Benz have lead to the creation of new projects over the past several months that will help both companies cut spending by about another 100 million euros a year by 2012.

Efficiency is always a key word within any BMW product and now it will be applied to the brand economy as well, BMW is looking into every cost lowering aspect and they will even be helping component suppliers improve efficiency as well as develop systems, such as start/stop technology, that they may be able to sell to other manufacturers.

It seems that BMW have realized that efficiency cannot be achieved just through high volume of sales and, according to Diess, new projects with Mercedes-Benz will lead to significant savings as well as technical advances.
