Oliver Zipse, the head of the BMW Group, believes that the possible ban on the sale of cars with conventional engines “is very dangerous”. He points out that such a decision will make the purchase of a new car more difficult and restrictive.

It is no longer a secret that most manufacturers are preparing for the era of electric cars. From 2030, most brands, including BMW, will have only electric or hydrogen-powered cars in their model range. The manufacturers’ plans anticipate a complete ban on the sale of new cars with classic engines in the European Union from 2035.

However, there are also doubts about the accelerated transition to electric vehicles. Recently, Oliver Zipse, the head of the BMW Group, stated that the ban on cars with thermal engines represents a danger for the automotive industry. In his opinion, future cars would be affordable only for those with high incomes.

“We don’t want cars to be out of reach for low-income people,” he said. “Politically, this is very dangerous. If you suddenly make car ownership affordable only for the rich, it’s dangerous.”

Zipse also said BMW supports the shift to electric vehicles, but expressed concern about setting a date to ban combustion engine cars.

Such a decision would force many drivers to “drive old cars”, as he himself says.
In conclusion, the head of the Bavarian group also said that “there is no signal” that thermal engines will become obsolete in the next 15 years.

Cleaning the car’s engine bay can be a confusing and unnerving experience for many. Last year BMW pushed hard into the new market on the Asian continent. I am speaking about the Chinese market, which has opened wide in the last period.

Unfortunately for the German car maker, it seems that their start in China was a bit flawed.

A massive recall has been issued for about 230.000 vehicles sold in the Asian country. Specifically, the discovered issue affected 232.098 units, including the whole of the X Series SUVs, the BMW Z4 Roadsters and even several sedans. All the affected Bimmers were manufactured between June 10, 2009 and July 30, 2012.

Moving on to the actual problem, it seems that investigations revealed badly manufactured engine bolts. In certain conditions, these bolts can cause the engine control system to become loose or even break, compromising the seal in the process. There is even a chance that the engine will stop working altogether.

The new 2.0-liter petrol unit will debut on the BMW X1 xDrive28i while many other models are on the waiting list to benefit from the new engine. The new 2.0 TwinPower Turbo unit is able to develop 245 horsepower at 5000 rpm while the Germans announced a torque of 350 Nm available at 1250 rpm.

The new four-cylinder engine is able to meet the Euro5 requirments as the average fuel consumption stops at 7,9 liters/100 km while the CO2 emissions reach 183 g/km. The new petrol unit also offers a system which recovers the braking energy together with the well-known Start/Stop system, all these in order to make the new engine more eco-friendly.

Going in depth regarding the mechanical features, the new petrol unit features the High Precision Injection system together the Valvetronic and twin-scroll technologies. The first model to be equipped with the new propeller, the X1 xDrive28i manages to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h.

The 2010 Engine of the Year contest has concluded and while our favorite Bavarian car maker hasn’t had an overall win or a performance related win the trophies earned are quite amazing.

The judges at the fabled competition gave BMW a prize for three categories, four if you’re willing to count the Mini Cooper S’s victory.

The first win came in the 1.8 to 2.0 liters category and it went to BMW for their 2 liter inline-four diesel delivers 204 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Using this engine the 123d delivers 37 mpg even driven to some serious performance driving.

The next win came at the upper category with the BMW N54 taking the glory in the 2.5 to 3.0 liters section and it is a well worth prize as I don’t recall anybody, ever, having something less than great to say about it.

The Bavarians at BMW get another prize in the 3.0 to 4.0 liter category for the S65 4.0 liter V8 engine that can only be found in the M3. That’s pretty much all you need to know.

As an added bonus, the subsidiary company, Mini took best in class at the 1.4 to 1.8 liter category for the engine in the Cooper S for the combination of performance and fuel efficiency.

In its 15th year of existence, the list of Ward’s 10 Best Engines is home of two BMWs.

On 2nd and 3rd place we can see the 3.0 liter turbocharged DOHC I-6 from BMW 135i Coupe and the 3.0 liter DOHC I-6 Turbodiesel from 335d. The only engine which was considered to be better was the 2.0 liter TFSI turbocharged DOHC I-4 which is currently mounted on the A4 Avant. However, Audi has only one engine in the list and BMW can be considered the best engine producer overall. The motors were chosen because of their performance and the fuel efficiency which they offer.

The award from ward is a great addition to BMW and it will surely keep up their moral in times like this.

Many discussions were started around the BMW 7 Series, but no one expected for it to be released on the US market. Because of the current international factors, more people are starting to be attracted by the BMW 7 Series Diesel engine.

This six cylinder machine is capable of reaching 245 horse power, more than enough for any BMW lover. There are two main versions of the Diesel engine, but we don’t know which one will be introduced in the US, at least not yet. The BMW 7 Series Diesel has gained popularity because of its efficiency: it can be 25% more fuel efficient than the gasoline version.
