BMW was established in Munich, Germany, in 1916. They were just as desirable back then as they are now, but not everyone wants a modern-day BMW. Some people prefer Audi’s, Mercedes, or even a standard Vauxhall Corsa. But anyone who appreciates cars or with an eye for a car that many would call a status symbol car will know the BMWs command respect on the roads – especially the souped-up models like the M140i’s.

The nay-sayers will argue that BMWs aren’t reliable. Some will say they’re terrible to drive in the snow, some will say they’re expensive to run, and other people will complain that they’re not mechanically reliable. Considering 2,028,841 BMWs sold in 2020, let’s explore how reliable recent models are and why many people are so desperate to own one.

What Does The Research Say?

Before we get started, it’s worth confirming that the data says many models of cars are unreliable. A report issued by WhatCar? found that MG, Kia, and Mazdas are the most unreliable cars, and Mini, Dacia, and Lexus are the top three most reliable. Still, BMW hasn’t scored above average in the consumer reliability ratings published by Consumer Reports.

From unwanted breakdowns to frequent reliability issues, BMWs sometimes have a negative reputation – but everything from the driver’s style of driving to the age of the vehicle must be considered when thinking about the reliability of recent BMW models.

Consumer reports found that cars between the age of four and eight years old are most likely to be off the road. Buying a BMW new, then – straight off the lot – means you do get a decent run out of it and, also, are able to give it your best TLC to maintain it. Investing in car repair insurance – something only eligible for cars with under 12000 miles on the clock – will help cover any surprise issues through the early- and mid-life of the car, as it covers mechanical breakdowns that occur without any collision impacting performance. If the engine goes kaput of its own accord, car repair insurance will kick in.

Consumer reports also found the 3 Series model to be the one most prone to frequent repairs or failures during that period. Yet the 3 Series is by far one of the most popular models, according to a study by BMW Toronto and multiple other sources.

Now we know the reliability issues come with age rather than fundamental issues that are there from the beginning, we can assume that recent BMW models are reliable, for now.

Which Models Are The Most Unreliable?

Like any manufacturer, some models are going to do better than others. As mentioned earlier, however, the kink in the BMW model armor is the 3 series which has managed to single-handedly fuel the conspiracy that BMWs aren’t mechanically reliable. They’re excellent to drive, but they do come with a few hiccups along the way. Below are some of the most consistently documented issues with the BMW 3 Series models and others:

• Engine cooling system issues
• Oil leaks
• Poor tail lamp assembling
• Steering imbalances

Again, take these issues with a pinch of salt – often, the driving style plays a leading role in reliability and mechanical problems. Drive Tribe – a popular online car blog created by the presenters of Top Gear – thinks the BMW M5 E60 is one of the more unreliable models. They reported the rod bearing, VANOS issue, and high oil consumption as the frequent problems with this model.

Which Models Are The Most Reliable?

Looking historically, Auto Express ranks the following as the best models ever:

• BMW M1

• BMW E30 M3

• BMW M5 E39

• BMW 3.0 CSL E9

• BMW M5 E28

But sadly, none of them come in as the most reliable. There are various opinions about which model is the most reliable, but one that crops up on every list – and is usually always first on the list – is the BMW E90 3-Series. Even though it might not be the quickest out of the BMW model range, it is the most reliable. In terms of recent models, the 2018 BMW i3 and the 2019 BMW F40. Both of those cars are great, but they don’t carry the same BMW prowess that some models do – and that’s where the right care and maintenance of some of the more favorable models play a part.

One study found that 41% of people thought BMW drivers are the most annoying – there’s a sad stigma surrounding BMW drivers that society has pinned on all BMWs. But anyone who owns a BMW knows they’re elegant, powerful, and desirable – especially the recent models with more sophisticated specs. If you own a BMW, consider regular services and maintenance checks and adopting the right driving style to ensure your BMW lasts for years to come.

We live in a world where human imagination exceeds all boundaries and where, with the help of technology, our mind can create or recreate extraordinary machines that could make our lives better and better in the future.

Such an extraordinary machine, especially in the auto industry, is the BMW M1 Shark Concept, envisioned by render artist Alex Imnadze, and is presented in the first drawings below.

We are looking here practically at one of the most futuristic BMW model ever envisioned so far…at least, in my humble imagination.

It is extremely aggressive, comes with an imaginably wide body kit, futuristic design and advanced aerodynamics.

Surely, the artist had to take its inspiration from other outstanding BMW concepts as well, including the BMW M1 Concept, the Gina Concept as well as the 1970 Stratos Zero prototype from Bertone. Also, at a closer look, you could also depict some styling at the front with inspiration from the Vision Next 100 Concept as well.

And we could still be dreaming about the future, where this model would perfectly fit with its ultra-futuristic approach. Just by admiring it, we could imagine it flying into the sky or automatically parking without a driver behind the steering wheel.

But who knows, sketches like these could actually inspire BMW in creating such an extraordinary machine in the upcoming future, especially since the German carmaker has the know-how, the latest technology at its disposal and the most skilled engineers. The German based Mint Classics dealer is well-known for its collection of the rarest and most legendary sports cars ever built and recently, the dealer announced the selling of the 1981 BMW M1.

The 1981 BMW M1 is a rare and iconic BMW model and must be treated as such, the M1 being built in just three vehicles, wearing the astonishing Polaris Silver exterior color.

And since it is so rare, Mint Classics is asking a whopping $965,000, the dealer stating that this specific model is “probably the most special BMW M1 street car on the market today.” And that for a good reason, since is comes with only 17,500 km, the model being also in a pristine condition.

Apart this special BMW M1 coming in Silver Polaris paint, the second one out of three was especially built for Bernard Charles Ecclestone aka Bernie Ecclestone, a famous former F1 driver who now holds around 25% of the Formula 1`s commercial rights.

The BMW 1M, which is one of the most wanted BMWs all time, is not and will never be forgotten, as the hot ride was recently tuned-up and then sent for a photo session, curtesy of the guys from the C-Kraft Photography.

But before being photoshot, the BMW 1M all wrapped in the special Alpine White finish, has received a one-off upgrade body style, consisting of an aggressive body language and some other parts at the front and rear end. The wider track, which is also complemented by the ADV5.0 M.V2 CS wheels with red finish, from ADV.1 Wheels, give the model a special stance on the track.

Let`s not forget that since we are talking about a wanted sports car, the prices set out for this particular model are even higher now than the previous catalogue prices, and its value is also given by the high-performance it comes with under the hood.

We are talking here about a 3.0-liter unit, developing a great 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The BMW 1M is hooked to a six-speed manual transmission and is also equipped with a limited slip differential.

Remember the extraordinary and the extravagant BMW 1M model, which used to enchant our eyes with exotic paintjobs and engine revving, before hitting the roads in full throttle?

Well, a BMW 1M all wrapped in a camouflage vinyl paintjob has recently popped the web, the model looking like being ready to go hunting. We are not sure whose work is this, but judging by the license plates, the BMW 1M was surely customized in Austria.

Apart from the extraordinary camouflage vinyl, the BMW 1M was also customized, the sports car now receiving some new body components, like carbon fiber front lip and mirror caps, rear diffuser and spoiler and a few more to make it stand out from the crowd.

To be a reminder, the BMW 1M is one of the company`s most wanted models, and in case you want to buy one, in the stock stage or fully loaded with different customizations, the sports car now costs more than the $47,300 original price.

Unfortunately, the BMW carmaker has decided to put the 1M on the stand, in June 2012, after being successfully sold in 6309 models, out of which 740 units in the United States and 220 units in Canada.

We are talking here about 340 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, hooked to a six-speed manual with limited slip differential, capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in around 4.8 seconds.

The BMW 1M was produced in 6309 units until 2012, being sold worldwide in three paintjobs: the Valencia Orange, Alpine White as well as the Sapphire Black, so in case you own a BMW 1M in a Frozen Blue, make sure you take good care of it, as it is a custom-made finish, which gives the car a special feeling and looks.

A video with a drag race between the hot ride F80 BMW M3 and the little BMW 1M has recently popped–out on the web, showcasing the two sports cars racing against each other.

Well, let`s have a look at the specifications of the two models and mind that even if the 1M is the smaller brother, don’t think that it doesn’t come with suitable power for the almighty M3 Sedan.

First off, the big difference between the two of them is that the F80 BMW M3 is packing a 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit, and that on the stock model, without any engine upgrades, which develops 425 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque, hooked to a 7-speed M DCT.

On the other hand the BMW 1M is smaller and lighter, which might be a huge advantage over the stock BMW M3 sedan, weighing just 1,570 kg as opposed to 1,670 kg. More than that, the 1M also sports an upgraded unit, meaning more power and torque.

Modifications refer to ECU mapping, intercooler, CAI or downpipes which sets the model at 400 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque, hooked to a six-speed manual transmission.

A one of a kind BMW M1 was recently the work of art of the famous Andy Warhol, who managed to paint this exclusive model and display it at the BMW`s Art exhibit.

We are talking about a BMW E26 M1 model, a rare car that managed to be one of the mode iconic and legendary BMWs in the history of the company between 1978 and 1981.

The BMW M1 was the “Giugiaro designed monster” which could face the top turbocharged versions with massive 850 horsepower, churned out from a six-engine.

The BMW M1 was also that one-off racing car which Niki Lauda used on the tracks, when squeezing the 273 horsepower out of it, from a mid-engined and a top speed of 260 km/h.

A BMW 1M Coupe has been recently previewed in a video, packing huge V8 unit under the hood, which means an additional power and torque.

The BMW 1M Coupe seen here is packing a huge V8 unit, the model receiving the power soon after it was launched on the market by the German carmaker.

We are talking about a tuned up engine, the carmaker dropping off the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine which used to develop 340 horsepower, at 5,900 rpm and 550 Nm of torque.

The new 4.0-liter V8 unit packed on the BMW 1M Coupe is now capable of developing an impressive 414 horsepower, available at 8,300 rpm and 400 Nm of torque, at 3,900 rpm.

Since the standard BMW 1M Coupe is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, we can dare to think that this particular one is capable to run the straight line even faster.
