BMW is entering a new phase, and you can feel it in the way the brand is approaching its most important models. This is no longer about experimenting with electric vehicles on the side. It’s about rethinking what core BMWs should be in an electric era.

Depending on the variant and application, it pumps out 322–382 HP and 450–500 Nm of torque. It has forged aluminum piston rods and crankshaft, as well as a closed deck block.

Thanks to the modularity of the designs, the very same forged piston rods that go into the B58 are also used in B48. In addition, similarly to its bigger brother, the inline-four also has a closed deck aluminum engine block.

Although the B engines are all relatively new, their hefty internal components bode really well for their base longevity. They also make for a solid tuning platform.

BMW B46 Engine Specs and Reliability

Despite the BMW B46 engine being almost identical to the B48, it’s still worth explaining the different numbering. After all, you might’ve already come across this designation. BMW B46 is basically a version of B48 that complies with the American SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) requirements. The changes include distinct air intake, sensors, catalytic converters, and factory tune adjusted to those parts.

From the perspective of BMW ECU tuning or reliability, there are no significant differences between the two. The B46 was installed basically in the same models as B48, only destined for the US market.

BMW B38 Engine Specs and Reliability

The smallest and the first engine of the modular B family, this inline-three was introduced in 2013 along with the BMW i8 hybrid. The two versions it comes in (1.2 and 1.5 L) are available with outputs of 74–228 hp and 150–320 NM of torque.

BMW N55 Engine Specs and Reliability

An evolution of the previous design, the BMW N55 engine was produced from 2009 and gradually replaced the N54 in many applications. It was rated at 302–365 hp and 400–465 Nm of torque, depending on the version. Instead of two turbos, BMW used only one twin-scroll turbocharger, which made the motor lighter than the N54.

Similarly to its predecessor, the BMW N55 engine is quite strong and tolerates power increases well. This means that along with taking a few years off of it, with tuning you’ll be able to gain some extra “juice,” to help you overtake other cars swiftly.

BMW N20 Engine Specs and Reliability

If you are into Bavarian engines, you might think that the BMW N20 isn’t really suitable for tuning. Although it had its share of problems right after its inception, they have mostly been solved. Moreover, one of the issues that troubled this design was related to high intake air temperatures it experienced. Which is something that can be easily remedied by a proper ECU tune that will lower how hot the engine is running overall.

Introduced in 2011, this turbo inline-four was a replacement for a naturally aspirated straight-six N53 engine. It came in two displacement versions (1.6 and 2.0 L) and produced 168–241 hp and 250–350 Nm of torque.

As a predecessor of the B48, it was installed in a similar range of cars (with the exception of 30i BMW models) until it was replaced by the latter after 2017. Examples of N20-powered vehicles include:

• BMW 220i/228i (F22)
• BMW 320i/328i (F30)

BMW Engines Good for Tuning – Honorable Mentions

Apart from the power plants described up to this point, there are also other BMW engines that are really well-suited for ECU tuning. They are at the bottom of the list not because of their small potential, but due to the fact that they already are extremely powerful in their stock form.

However, if you wanted to, their durable internal components offer great safety reserves for additional power gains. So, which of these designs are a perfect match for engine tuning?

• BMW S55 – a performance version of the N55 introduced in the BMW M3 (F80), with different variants producing 275–493 hp and up to 600 Nm of torque. Manufactured from 2014 to 2021.
• BMW S63 – the strongest engine currently offered in the Bavarian lineup, this twin-turbo 4.4 L V8 powers the top-of-the-line M cars, like BMW M5 (F90) and M8 (F91/92/93), as well as their Competition variants. Produced from 2009, this power plant makes up to 635 hp and 750 Nm of torque.
• BMW S58 – based on the B58 but heavily revised, this engine debuted in BMW X3 M (F97) and X4 M (F98) in 2019. Currently still in production and used on models like the latest BMW M3 (G80), it pumps out 453–503 hp and 550–650 Nm of torque.

How to Tune a BMW Engine Safely?

There are many variables that have to be taken into account when tuning an engine. A few days ago, BMW published a teaser image with a 100% recyclable concept, made entirely of secondary materials or renewable raw materials. Its name is i Vision Circular and it is built on the architecture of Neue Klasse “according to the four principles of the circular economy: Re: Think, Re: Duce, Re: Use, Re: Cycle.”

The prototype announces a compact BMW for 2040 that can be admired at the stand of the Bavarian manufacturer at the Munich Motor Show.

The front has been much simplified, in terms of the number of pieces here. We have a grid interpreted as a digital surface, which incorporates the headlights, the brand logo and the car emblem are laser engraved to avoid the use of additional leather.

The windshield and the ceiling form a single piece, and the rims with thin spokes and the smoky-looking glass tailgate, which integrates the taillights, complete the package.

Inside, the dashboard and steering wheel were 3D printed, and the multimedia system display was moved to the base of the windshield.

The upholstery of the seats is made of recycled plastic and is fixed in an aluminum frame. The seats are supported on a base with one thin leg.

As I said, the BMW i Vision Circular remains, at least for now, at the concept stage.

BMW has redesigned the X1 compact crossover and this latest version’s prototype has a battery-electric version.

Last summer, the CEO of BMW confirmed the plan for an electric X1 and an electric 5-series. The electric X1 would be called the iX1, he stated.

The redesigned X1 is based on the latest front-wheel-drive architecture from BMW, which is known as FAAR. The FAAR platform is a renewed version of the UKL platform that supports the current X1.

The biggest change is the option for a battery-electric powertrain.

The spy photos don’t reveal much and we can’t see the bumper’s design due to the camouflage garb. The bumper will likely be the same as the old one.

BMW didn’t disclose any details regarding the power under the hood, but we expect that the powertrain on the base variant will be teamed up with a single electric motor. A more potent option with two motors forming an all-wheel-drive system will also be offered. The expected range of the battery-electric model will be at least 250 miles for all variants.

The Mini Cooper SE, the aforementioned iX1, and the new i4 are being launched by the BMW Group for the 2022 model year. The refreshed version of the BMW X1 is expected to go sale in 2022 as a 2023 model with the iX1 arriving at the same time.

The BMW i4 is under its testing phase, which means a lot of spy shots have been circulating the internet trying to make sense of the upcoming design. The latest photos have revealed a lot more than before, including details of the front-grille design.

The front-end is partially visible, and although it is still covered by camouflage material, a lot more can be said about the grille’s shape and size. The BMW i4 will have the same signature kidney-grille as before with practically the same size as in the earlier models.

The headlights are also clearly visible for the first time revealing a c-shaped design. The LED daytime lights and the two projector-beam combo has been the go-to for BMW in the recent past and the i4 follows the same pattern.

Unsurprisingly, the rear of the vehicle also shows more than it did earlier. The taillights, for example, can be seen more clearly and we can decipher their near-final shape. Since the camouflage panels have started coming off, we can say for sure that the BMW i4’s release is not that far away.

The prototype vehicle is in its final stages of testing and once that is complete, BMW will reveal the I4 in its final form. It is expected to be released by late 2021 so expect a full unveiling by the Spring/Summer of 2021.

The BMW i4 is touted to be more powerful than some of BMW’s performance cars like the M3 and M4. The i4 will produce 530 hp at its peak, which will allow it to go from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 4 seconds or less. The whopping performance figures are possible thanks to the single motor setup and BMW’s intuitive drag-reduction aerodynamic technology.

BMW has been tight-lipped on the price of the i4, but expect it to be around $70,000 for the base variant.

With these shreds of evidence and numbers, The BMW concept i4 beats the Tesla Model 3 in various prospects except the top speed. The i4 Concept beats Tesla Model 3 concerning range and prospects of reaching 0-62 mph in 4 seconds as compared to 5.3 seconds for Tesla Model 3.

BMW announced that they would not continue their i3 electric model a few weeks ago. There will be no successor but the model will still be sold. It doesn’t seem to be because sales aren’t successful, because the truth is actually quite the contrary. Currently in its sixth year of production the i3 has seen five different iterations. BMW has sold over 150,000 of these cars so far, and demand for them has increased each year. Sales were actually 21 percent higher than the same period last year, and sales in August were 30 percent higher. There must be another reason that they are discontinuing it, right? Well, it looks like it may simply be an advance for the company.

Success of the i3

In fact, the i3 has not only been successful in sales, it has been able to beat some records as well. IN August, the German company placed number one for record performance. The electric model has not shown any sign that is less effective than traditional engines, it has shown that it can keep up and even beat some of them.

Furthermore, according to the experts at the site MoneyPug, which is used often to find car insurance, the i3 has shown that it is quite reliable. It regularly tests very well when it comes to safety, which makes it cheaper to insure than some electric models. If it isn’t sales and it isn’t performance or safety, why is the company discounting the successful model?

Why the i3 will Stop Being Produced

The real reason that the electric car won’t have a successor is that it is going to start making its mainstream models electric. This strategy is what they have started doing with their new Mini Electric vehicle, which is essentially an electric version of their classic Mini. BMW won’t be focusing on creating new models from scratch, they will be making all of their cars electric. This suggests that it is working for them, and that they plan to compete with Tesla in the all-electric market. By ending the i3, BMW is signaling that electrification is a change in their overall strategy instead of a side project of the luxury brand. With this new branding, they may be able to stay relevant.

BMW is taking steps to get ahead of many automobile companies and compete with those who are already in the market. Tesla will be their main competition but Porsche and Jaguar both are building more electric vehicles. While the company is discontinuing its popular model, it is a sign that they are committing even further to the ethos of electric automobiles.

If they can be successful at building these models and selling them, the German auto engineers will cement their place in the future as a top car company. German-based carmaker BMW released its latest model, the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster back in March, with deliveries already starting in the United States and recently in the United Kingdom.

Well-received and appreciated all-over the world, the company`s newest toys has also attracted tuning companies, and that`s because of its design language and advanced technology.

One prove in this regard is the extensive tuning program that famous German-based aftermarket shop AC Schnitzer has carried out on the i8 Roadster. You can see full details about it in the media gallery below.

Famous for their exclusive programs, particularly at the exterior, AC Schnitzer have added a full body kit with parts made from carbon fiber. However, under the hood, the model has not received any new modifications. This means the same 1.5 three-cylinder turbocharged engine plus an electric motor, both delivering a total of 369 horsepower. It also manages an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, meaning a 0.2 second difference compared with the i8 Coupe. The new battery also allows for an average consumption of 70 eMPG.

As for the exterior highlights, almost every inch of the car has been modified. Starting with the wheels, which is my favourite part, the technicians from AC Schnitzer have fitted 21 inches AC1 lightweight forged bi-colour, providing at the same time a 4.4 kg decrease in weight. They make the car extremely aggressive, especially since it sits lower to the ground, thanks to the new custom lowering spring kit.

From a visual standpoint, the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster by AC Schnitzer comes with a new front spoiler, middle front spoiler, front side wings and front and rear air outlets. There is also the “Racing” rear wing for more downforce or the 160 mm emblems on the sides, and the new door handle panels.

The interior perfectly complements the exterior with floor mats covered in velour, aluminum pedals and footrest.

BMW lovers in the United Kingdom are glad to know that the hot i8 Roadster is here for the taking. However, it doesn’t come cheap, customers emptying their pockets for at least £124,735 OTR. For that money, you get technology at its best, plenty of driving modes for a more comfortable ride, fuel efficiency and so on.

Speaking of fuel efficiency, the all-new 2019 BMW i8 Roadster uses a hybrid powertrain combining a three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. All in one, the system develops 374 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. That also means a standstill to 100 km/h in a blasting 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The result is, according to the carmaker, a combined fuel economy of 141.2 mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 46g/km. That makes the perfect roadster for “a typical commute through city traffic and along country roads.”

As for the driving modes involved, there are no less than five – Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro in hybrid driving and Comfort and Eco Pro in all-electric driving.

The hybrid also features some tuning components for the damping systems and suspension. They come as standard and refer to the double-wishbone front axle, five-link rear axle and the company`s new Dynamic Damper Control.

The car`s structure also comprises a frameless dihedral doors, with the windscreen frame being made out from carbon fiber reinforced polymer, also known as CFRP. That makes this particular convertible more lightweight, with just 60 kg more over the Coupe.

From a visual standpoint, the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster follows the same language design as the standard model, however it does come with features of its own – 20-inch light-alloy wheels in W-spoke design or the new roof design. BMW is also offering new paintjobs like E-Copper metallic of Donington Grey metallic.

The interior is also high-class with the multi-functional instrument display, Carpo interior trim with full-leather upholstery or sports steering wheel.
