According to a statement made by someone within the German manufacturer which said that the new BMW Megacity will have a slightly big price tag than the Nissan Leaf, we assume that the new electric model known as Megacity will have a price of more than €30,000 considering Leaf’s prices.

Even the German official within BMW decided to keep its identity secret, we find a key detail on the new BMW Megacity which is expected to debut somewhere in 2013. Even this information is not very welcome as anyone would want a more affordable price, the German innovative model may offer something more than we expect, something to justify this price.

Tagged as a premium innovative model, the BMW Megacity is expected to surprise us through its technology while under the hood the four-seater will offer an electric unit able to develop 170 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. The model will also impose through lightweight and performance.

BMW decided to fill a registration for something which seems to be a new sub-brand, namely the new MegaCity range. In fact, we talk about new nine models developed by BMW but sold under another name, models which will be named from i1 to i9.

These models or at least a part of them will enter the market in 2012 and according to BMW’s Designer Adrian Van Hooydonk, this will be the same German quality but wrapped in another box. This decision rises another problem as we could expect totally new models to enter the new sub-brand range or we can expect modified versions of the already existing models but optimized of course to achieve environmentally friendly performance.

There is possible to see a concept model bearing the new sub-brand logo at the Detroit Auto Show in 2011, a fully electric model benefiting from a lightweight body and innovative technology. You can see above the new trademarks filled by BMW for the new sub-brand.

The future is of automobiles looking greener and greener because of the efforts made by the industry leaders to improve their cars and BMW makes no exception. Even more, the manufacturer is planning to increase its workforce in the green segment so that it can fulfill the demands for such cars.

Why the large numbers you might ask? Well, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics and the BMW Megacity electric vehicle are prime candidates because the clock is ticking fast until their launch.

It looks like BMW is trying to get a large slice of the green car market, as this will be a car of the future. The company is planning to slowly but surely increase the total vehicle sales per year and these models (and those that will follow) will have a thing or two to say.

As we told you in a recent article, and you probably know also, BMW is the official automotive partner for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games from Munich. The well known BMW Megacity project may debute at the 2012 Olympic Games in Munich. The electric model promises zero emissions and an electric engine capable to develop 170 horsepower with no fuel consumption.

We can not blame BMW because is using a marketing tool, they also will warn people about the global warming and will show the benefits of an electric model. Also, BMW will have the opportunity to introduce their model in front of a large public.

BMW Megacity will be built usign carbon fiber, a material more common in the today automotive industry, used by tuners while creating the tuning kits but also by the big auto manufacturers. BMW Megacity will be buit at the BMW’s plant in Leipzig and is expected to debute in 2013.

BMW released the first sketch of the compact electric model that will result from the Megacity project. Expected in 2013, the model will adopt an electric engine on the rear axle. About the BMW Megacity project has been written alot but no one was able to pinpoint the design direction that will take the Bavarians for the small electric models. Today, the Munich manufacturer has decided to give media and fans a first idea of how the new Megacity will look like, the compact electric expected to begin on the streets in 2013.

The sketch published by the Germans is only a teaser announcing the radical ecological lines of the model. The image betrays the shape of a small van with a body line that betrays sports accents.

For now, the Bavarians were quite greedy in detail, the only information announcing a four-seater model powered by an electric engine positioned on the rear axle, like the current Smart Electric Drive. To enhance the efficiency and the performance, BMW Megacity will use carbon fiber to reduce the total mass.

According to some reports from German magazine Autobild, the BMW Megacity will see its official debut at the 2011 Franfurt Motor Show.

To be honest, I may have gotten a bit more excited than necessary as by then the Bavarians will be showing us the first prototype of the Project I Megacity Car.

Still, the Frankfurt automotive event just got a bit more interesting and is going to be eagerly awaited by BMW fans with this in mind.

The actual production version of the Megacity will be arriving at a much later date, 2013 being mentioned but quite possibly, still the same motor show will house its launch.

While that remains to be seen there are still a few bits of information we, BMW fans, can enjoy as some sources are saying that the new car will be completely new, sharing no parts with other BMW brethren and thus becoming unique in its own right.

The BMW Megacity will feature a carbon fiber structure, will be full-electric, will be available in three body styles (four-seater, two-seater and a sports car) and will be built in Leipzig.

According to BMW targets the car is expected to sell around 150.000 units every year.

It’s only been about three weeks since we’ve had confirmation of the first BMW series-production of an electric-vehicle coming to the market with the launch of the Megacity Vehicle, scheduled for 2013.

Back then, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer stated that this BMW will move the bar and set a new industry tone as the Megacity Vehicle will be significantly lighter than conventional cars and, in terms of sustainability, will set a new standard across the entire value-added chain.

Since these claims still stand, here are some new ones. The BMW Megacity will be a full five seater vehicle sized about the same as a Golf with an unusual layout for a BMW, an electric car or pretty much most cars in general. The Megacity will be rear engined and rear wheel drive.

According to BMW the Megacity will be a revolution for electric vehicles and it will also have some of the company’s mainstream touches. The new electric car is set to have a range of 160 miles per charge but no mention on the charging time has been done.

The BMW Megacity will share most of the drivetrain with the BMW ActiveE concept.

About a week ago BMW has announced that they will be launching a car named, at the moment, Megacity Vehicle  by 2013.

The Megacity Vehicle is destined to be a zero-emission urban vehicle that will feature lightness as it’s key selling point. This lightness will be achieved as a result of use of more carbon fiber in the overall construction.

BMW’s head of global sales Ian Robertson has declared that this move will make BMW be the first manufacturer to take carbon fiber to effectively high volume, effectively turning the light polymer fiber into something that can at the moment only be found on the most expensive of cars into a product obtainable by the masses.

To be fair, people that buy BMWs in the first place aren’t “the masses” but i’m anticipating a revolution of the likes Ford brought along by bringing motorsport to the masses through stock cars.

Furthermore Robertson said that carbon fiber will be making it to more and more cars as general rules of construction that are used in the Megacity Vehicle are applicable everywhere. Another point Robertson made during his speech was that carbon fiber technology could help generate better economies of scale.

BMW and SGL Group have started building a $100 million carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Washington state to supply parts for its vehicles. That plant will produce the carbon fiber that a plant in Germany will mold it into paneling for the Megacity vehicle and, eventually, for other cars currently in the BMW range.
