As a passionate car enthusiast or business owner with a fleet of trucks, you may be familiar with chip tuning. It has nothing to do with fads or fancy upgrades. It is a proven technique to access more of your engine’s potential by increasing horsepower and torque.

Today on the blog, we’ll talk about chip tuning for BMW vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. We’ll explore why it’s worth your attention, why truck tuning is often easier and more accessible than many people think, and at the end, we’ll share some useful insights about a company that delivers these services at a truly professional level.

Chip Tuning in a Nutshell

On diesel engines and high-performance gasoline motors, professional chip tuning removes factory restrictions related to emissions, boost pressure, and fuel maps. This is relevant for BMW engines, which are often delivered from the factory with conservative calibrations designed to meet the emissions requirements and manufacturer safety margins. The result: +18–35% more power and torque, along with noticeably improved throttle response. However, the process requires precision since every engine (N47, B58, N55, etc.) comes with its own specifics and tuning nuances.

But here’s an interesting fact: chip tuning isn’t limited to passenger cars.

Trucks are actually a gold mine for this type of upgrade. The owners of the semi-trucks, buses, tractors, and heavy machinery search for methods to enhance engine efficiency and decrease fuel expenses under demanding working conditions.

And this is where chip tuning really shines — often solving several problems at once:

Increased power and torque (especially at low RPM)

5–12% fuel savings in real-world driving conditions

Longer engine life thanks to more efficient operating parameters

Most importantly — truck tuning is often simpler and faster than many people expect.

Why Truck Chip Tuning Is Easier Than You Think

Unified Engine Platforms

Truck engines from the same family (for example Volvo D11/D13, Mack MP8, or Renault DXi) often share nearly identical software across large production batches.

In other words, tuning files are already validated through thousands of installations, creating predictable and dependable processes.

BMW platforms, on the other hand, vary widely between models, production years, and ECU hardware. Each setup often requires a custom approach, making it difficult to reuse the same files across different vehicles.

Economics Come First

Saving just 1–2 L/100 km on a truck that drives 150,000–200,000 km per year can translate into tens of thousands of dollars in annual savings.

In most cases, the tuning investment pays for itself in 1–4 months.

Additionally, removing emissions systems can extend engine life in regions with lower fuel quality.

For passenger cars, chip tuning is often about driving excitement.
For trucks, it’s about operational efficiency and profitability.

Fewer Electronic Restrictions

Modern BMW passenger cars often have complex anti-tuning protections.

Trucks typically have fewer electronic limitations, and since they are used primarily for commercial purposes, the focus is on operational efficiency rather than strict adherence to factory software restrictions.

Remote Tuning Capabilities

Most trucks can be tuned remotely via the internet using tools such as the Mochester App (M4 App) or other specialized software (Cummins INSITE, Detroit Diesel DiagnosticLink, etc.) via TeamViewer.

Remote tuning is sometimes possible on BMW vehicles as well, but it is generally more complicated due to stricter security protections.

Conclusion:
If you want to experience chip tuning without unnecessary complications, start with a truck. The process is faster, more affordable, and the benefits are often much more noticeable — a power increase of up to 20–40%, fuel savings, and fewer service visits.

DrunkLab — Truck Tuning Experts with Convenient Remote Solutions

When it comes to high-quality and safe chip tuning for heavy-duty equipment, DrunkLab is one of the companies leading the market.

The company specializes in tuning for:

Trucks

Buses

Construction equipment

Marine engines

Industrial engines

Supported brands include Volvo, Mack, Renault, UD Trucks, Volvo CE, Volvo Penta, Prevost, as well as engines from Detroit Diesel, Cummins, and PACCAR.

Their services include:

Complete DPF / EGR / DEF / SCR (AdBlue) removal

Stage 1–2 performance tuning for increased power and improved fuel economy

Remote tuning solutions through the proprietary Mochester App (M4 App) — a powerful software tool for reading and tuning ECU parameters in real time.

Using this method, you don’t need to take the truck to a shop, you don’t lose billable hours, and you don’t incur costs due to downtime.

Simply connect your truck to a Windows laptop via a diagnostic adapter, then install the Mochester App. The app promptly identifies tuning options tailored for your truck using the VIN and chassis number. Add funds to your account, choose the tuning solution you want, and the Mochester App will do the installation for you. Once the process is complete, you’ll receive a full tuning report. If any issues arise along the way, our engineering support team is available 24/7 to assist you.

For truck owners operating in distant regions, this solution is especially convenient.

Depending on the complexity of the job, the entire process usually takes from 20 minutes to a couple of hours.

DrunkLab Partner Program: Save Up to 30% — or Start Earning

Turbochargers often fail due to internal wear, while the rest of the unit usually remains serviceable. A turbocharger repair kit corrects imbalance between wear components and structural parts. Turbochargers operate under extreme thermal and rotational load. The system distributes load continuously bearings, seals, and thrust elements. When these components exceed wear limits, oil control degrades, shaft stability declines, and boost efficiency drops. The majority of housing and wheels continue to be usable for service. The turbocharger assembly requires no replacement because repair kits restore its internal geometry and functional clearances.

How a Turbocharger Works

A turbocharger uses exhaust energy to increase intake air mass. The exhaust gases drive a turbine wheel, which connects to the compressor wheel through a shaft. The turbine speed increases when exhaust flow increases, which powers the compressor. The compressor pressurizes intake air to increase oxygen availability inside the combustion chamber.

The rotating assembly operates at very high speeds. The shaft is supported by a hydrodynamic oil film within bearings. Oil pressure prevents metal-to-metal contact, dissipates heat, and stabilizes rotation. Axial forces generated by boost pressure are controlled by thrust bearings. System function depends on oil quality, bearing surface integrity, and precise alignment of rotating components. Any deviation from designed clearances results in friction, leakage, or imbalance.

Typical Turbocharger Problems

Turbocharger wear follows predictable mechanical patterns. The primary failure points are internal and progressive. Common issues include:

Oil leakage caused by worn seal rings or excessive bearing clearance

Radial or axial shaft play resulting from bearing surface wear.

Reduced boost pressure due to inefficient compressor rotation.

Oil contamination from thermal breakdown or debris circulation.

Contact between rotating wheels and housings due to misalignment.

Increased shaft play accelerates seal failure. Oil leakage contaminates intake and exhaust systems. Boost loss increases exhaust temperature and load on remaining components.

What a Turbocharger Repair Kit Contains

A turbocharger repair kit replaces components responsible for internal tolerances. Kits are model-specific and precisely matched to the shaft and housing dimensions. Standard contents include:

Journal bearings or bearing sleeves sized to the shaft.

Thrust bearings, collars, and washers for axial load control.

Seal rings or piston rings for oil containment.

Spacers, shims, and retaining clips.

O-rings and gaskets for oil and air sealing.

These parts are manufactured to restore factory clearances. Turbine wheels, compressor wheels, and housings are excluded because they rarely fail without external damage.

Turbocharger Repair Process Overview

Turbocharger repair begins with controlled disassembly. Component orientation is marked to preserve the balance reference. The compressor housing and turbine housing are removed from the center housing. Bearings, thrust components, and seals are extracted and inspected.

Shaft journals and wheel bores are measured for scoring, taper, and heat damage. If surfaces remain within tolerance, rebuilding proceeds. New bearings and thrust parts from the repair kit are installed. Seal rings are replaced to restore oil control. Clearances are verified during assembly to ensure correct oil film formation.

Dynamic balancing is essential because even minor imbalances can cause rapid failure at high rotational speeds. Repair kits restore mechanical integrity but do not correct the imbalance. Balancing must be performed after reassembly to ensure durability and noise control.

Benefits of Repair Kits Over Full Turbo Replacement

Repair kits address the root cause of most turbocharger failures. Compared to full replacement, they provide clear mechanical and economic advantages:

Repair kits reduce cost by reusing housings and wheels that remain within specification.

Original equipment geometry is preserved, avoiding aftermarket fitment variance.

Material waste is reduced by replacing only wear components.

Performance is restored without altering boost control or calibration.

Full replacement is justified only when housings are cracked, wheels are damaged, or shafts are deformed. In wear-related failures, replacement offers no functional benefit.

Turbochargers experience failure because their components undergo predictable wear that affects their bearings, seals, and thrust elements. A turbocharger repair kit restores internal clearances, oil control, and shaft stability without replacing intact structural parts. When combined with proper inspection and dynamic balancing, repair kits return turbochargers to operational condition and original performance levels. For serviceable turbocharger cores, rebuilding is the most direct and efficient repair strategy.

Let’s face it: nothing kills the vibe of a road trip like the infotainment screen of your BMW or MINI stubbornly refusing to show Android Auto. You plug in your phone, wait for the magic to happen, and… nothing. No maps, no music, just you, the open road, and some wind noise. But don’t worry – you’re not alone. Plenty of drivers have been there and, thankfully, most Android Auto not working issues are easier to fix than you might think.

Why Android Auto Might Not Show Up

Several factors can prevent Android Auto from appearing on your car’s screen. These include compatibility issues, outdated software, incorrect settings, or connection problems with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Understanding the root cause is the first step toward resolving the issue, so let’s take a look at some of those right now…

Top 7 Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Fixing Android Auto on BMW iDrive

Step 1 – Check your vehicle compatibility.

Not all BMW and MINI models support Android Auto out of the box. Some may require a retrofit or software upgrade, which is especially true for older vehicles. Verify that your car’s infotainment system supports Android Auto features and check if you need a cable to connect your phone. Not every implementation is wireless.

Step 2 – Ensure Android Auto is installed and updated.

Make sure your smartphone has the latest version of the Android Auto app installed. Outdated software can cause connectivity issues and prevent Android Auto from showing up on the BMW iDrive screen. Quick thing to note though is that while we’re referring to the AA as an app here, it’s not one in the traditional sense. It’s integrated into the OS, but you can still force an update or revert it via app settings.

Step 3 – Review Android Auto settings.

Go to your phone’s settings and ensure Android Auto is enabled. Check for any restrictions or battery optimizations that might prevent the app from running in the background.

Step 4 – Check for conflicting apps.

Some third-party apps can interfere with the operation of Android Auto. Try uninstalling or completely disabling recently installed apps to see if the problem persists.

Step 5 – Update your car’s software.

As is the case with any device, outdated software on the car’s infotainment system can also cause compatibility issues with Android Auto. Check for any available updates for your BMW or MINI’s iDrive system and install them if necessary.

Step 6 – Restart your phone and car’s infotainment system.

Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. We know it’s almost a meme at this point, but it actually works very often… Unpair your phone from your car, turn them off, wait a minute or so, then power them back on and try to pair them again.

Step 7 – Check connection settings.

In certain situations Android Auto not working on iDrive might be caused by the infotainment system not getting any signal or the signal being interrupted. For wired Android Auto: if you’ve got a spare USB cable, try using it to reconnect your phone. Troubleshooting a cable-free setup is going to be slightly different. If your car supports wireless Android Auto, ensure both your phone and car are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and that Bluetooth is enabled.

The Thing Is Stubborn…! The 3 Additional Advanced Troubleshooting Steps

The simple fixes didn’t work? It’s time to step it up a notch. Like with anything technical, there are also more advanced solutions for the issues with Android Auto and BMW iDrive connectivity. Since the “gentler” approach didn’t help, we’ll have to explore these – think of it as whipping out an impact wrench after a regular breaker bar failed.

Step 1 – Clear cache and data.

If Android Auto keeps disconnecting or crashes frequently, clearing the app’s cache and data might help. Go to your phone’s Settings → Apps → Android Auto → Storage, then tap “Clear Cache” and “Clear Data.” After that, try pairing your phone to the BMW iDrive again.

Step 2 – Reset network settings.

If you’re using wireless Android Auto, resetting your phone’s network settings could resolve some connectivity issues. Problems with how the network operates may affect other connectivity methods, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Step 3 – Perform a factory reset.

As a last resort, you can try performing a factory reset on your phone and BMW iDrive system. Please note that this will erase all settings and data, so only consider it if you’re willing to reconfigure everything from the ground up.

How to do it? First, the Android Auto phone.

Open the Settings.

Find the System tab and choose the Reset options.

In there, click Erase all data (factory reset).

Confirm the reset by selecting Erase all data.

Your device will be restored to its original factory settings, so it might be a good idea to back up your data before attempting that. Now for resetting the BMW iDrive to its factory state…

Find the iDrive settings in the settings menu.

Navigate to the Data privacy tab.

Next, choose the option called Delete personal data and click Confirm.

Leave and lock your vehicle to complete the resetting process.

Again, remember that doing so will permanently remove all your settings and data.

Still Not Working? Consider an Upgrade

If you have a BMW or MINI and the reliability of your Android Auto is spotty or non-existent, you might consider grabbing a special retrofit to remedy that. BimmerTech’s Android Auto MMI Prime Retrofit offers both wireless and wired Android Auto capabilities, with a full-screen mode and front or rear view camera support. Since it’s a separate unit that utilizes the iDrive screen, if the display is functioning properly, you won’t have to worry about the connectivity problems you had before.

The Best Way to Fix Android Auto Not Showing Up on the iDrive Screen…

Android Auto not showing up on the iDrive screen is a common issue, but it’s usually fixable with a few simple troubleshooting steps. Start by checking compatibility, updating your apps and car software, and ensuring proper connections. If Android Auto keeps disconnecting or not connecting at all, try advanced solutions like clearing cache, resetting network settings, or retrofitting an external module. With the right approach, you’ll quickly get back to enjoying all the features of Android Auto on your BMW or MINI’s iDrive display.

Managing transportation needs during employment transitions presents unique challenges, but understanding your options can make car financing manageable even during uncertain times. This comprehensive guide explores practical approaches and creative solutions for securing vehicle financing between jobs.

Understanding Lender Perspectives

Traditional lenders view steady employment as a cornerstone of creditworthiness. However, temporary unemployment doesn’t automatically disqualify someone from vehicle financing. Lenders evaluate multiple factors beyond current employment status, including credit history, savings, alternative income sources, and overall financial stability.

Building a Strong Financial Foundation

Before approaching lenders, gathering proper documentation becomes crucial. Bank statements showing consistent savings, investment portfolios, severance packages, and unemployment benefits can demonstrate financial responsibility. A robust credit score serves as concrete evidence of reliable payment history, potentially outweighing temporary employment gaps.

Alternative Income Verification

Lenders recognize that traditional W-2 employment isn’t the only path to financial stability. Demonstrable income from various sources can strengthen a financing application. Unemployment benefits often count as verifiable income when properly documented. Investment returns, rental property income, and regular deposits from contract work or side businesses demonstrate ongoing cash flow. Some applicants leverage structured settlements, trust disbursements, or regular family support as proof of steady income.

While it may seem challenging to finance a car without a job, several specialized options exist for those between positions. Certain dealerships and alternative lenders offer programs specifically designed for transitional employment situations, focusing more heavily on credit history and assets than current employment status.

Strategic Timing and Preparation

Timing plays a crucial role when seeking vehicle financing during employment transitions. Applicants with strong job prospects or signed offer letters often find more flexibility from lenders. Maintaining open communication about employment status and future plans can help build trust with potential lenders.

Strengthening Your Application

Several approaches can enhance financing possibilities during employment gaps. Larger down payments demonstrate commitment and reduce lender risk. Having a qualified co-signer with steady income can provide additional security for lenders. Choosing a more modest vehicle with lower monthly payments shows financial prudence. Documentation of upcoming employment or contract work helps bridge temporary gaps.

Creative Financing Solutions

Beyond traditional auto loans, alternative financing structures might prove more suitable during employment transitions. Lease takeovers can offer shorter commitment periods with potentially lower requirements. Some buyers explore private party loans or peer-to-peer lending platforms, which may offer more flexible terms than conventional lenders.

Understanding dealer financing programs becomes particularly valuable. Some dealerships maintain relationships with lenders specializing in challenging credit situations or employment gaps. These specialized programs might offer higher interest rates but provide crucial access to necessary transportation.

Risk Management and Protection

Securing appropriate insurance coverage remains essential, even during employment transitions. Many insurers offer payment plans or temporary coverage options to accommodate fluctuating financial circumstances. Gap insurance becomes particularly important when financing during uncertain employment periods, protecting against potential negative equity situations.

Long-term Financial Planning

Looking beyond immediate transportation needs, creating a sustainable financial plan helps ensure successful loan management. Building an emergency fund covering several months of car payments provides crucial breathing room during extended job searches. Understanding loan terms, including early payoff options and payment flexibility, helps navigate changing financial circumstances.

Exit Strategies and Contingency Planning

Smart borrowers always consider potential exit strategies before signing financing agreements. Understanding vehicle resale values, transfer options, and early termination fees provides valuable flexibility if employment situations change unexpectedly. Some buyers negotiate shorter loan terms or flexible payment arrangements to maintain more control over their financial obligations.

Moving Forward Successfully

Transportation needs don’t pause during employment transitions, but careful planning and understanding available options can make car financing manageable. By approaching the situation with thorough preparation, documentation, and knowledge of alternative solutions, buyers can secure appropriate transportation while maintaining financial stability.

Success often comes from combining multiple strategies – strong documentation, alternative income sources, strategic timing, and appropriate vehicle selection. Understanding lender perspectives and available options helps create realistic plans for managing car financing during employment transitions.

Frequent washing and maintenance of your BMW can present a buildup of grime, dirt, and other contaminants that can damage the exterior of your car over time. Contaminants also increase the wear and tear of your car’s paint, making it vulnerable to chips, scratches, and other types of damage. Let’s find out how you can choose the perfect car wash service to make you always feel proud of your vehicle.

Know the needs of your car

Before choosing a perfect car wash, it is crucial you assess your vehicle’s specific requirement. Factors such as your car materials, its condition and size are crucial. For example, a luxury BMW will need extra attention to preserve its delicate finishes.

Know the various types of car wash methods

Before choosing a car wash service, you must first understand the various methods and options available and also their merits and demerits. The major car wash methods include automatic car washes, which use machines to clean your car. Hand car washing, where your car is cleaned by professionals, and self-service car washes, where you use facility tools to wash your car yourself.

There are also mobile car wash services where the car wash service comes to your location and waterless car washes where your cars are cleaned without water. Each of these methods has its benefits, preferences, and budgets and caters to various needs. Additionally, if you frequently use car wash services, then it might be worthwhile to explore businesses that sell car washes with membership options tailored for luxury car owners.

Consider their services

Professional car wash centers usually provide various types of washing services, such as an all-around car spa, interior car spa, exterior car spa, and basic car wash. These packages are tailored to meet the different classes of your car’s requirements.

Factor in the location

It is important to choose a car washing center that is near you. Search for the nearest car washing center, since going too far might consume time and be more expensive.

Check reviews

Always check the customer reviews and feedback on the car washing service. You can find these on their online or website page. Choose centers with good reviews and ratings. This shows the quality of their work.

Compare prices

Different car washing centers have their unique pricing and packages. You must check the pricing of various car washing and spa services before deciding on the service. Consider choosing a service based on your requirement which includes your car type and not only focusing on the recommendation by the washing center staff.

Always visit the facility

If you are considering taking car washing service for the first time, then it is best you visit the facility. Observe their equipment and management to know the professionalism level of their service provider.

Endnote

Choosing the right car wash method is a combination of various factors, such as your time, budget, and your car’s specific needs. Irrespective of your choice, knowing the benefits and drawbacks can help you make an informed decision.

Adding personal touches to the exterior of your BMW car is an exciting way of setting it apart from others and attracting attention wherever you go. Whether you prefer sleek sophistication, bold statements, or subtle accents, there exists an abundance of creative ways to customize your vehicle and make it truly yours.

For a truly eye-catching and futuristic appearance, LED lighting is the way to go. And when it comes to LED lighting, consider choosing a renowned supplier like XK Glow, with a wide selection of innovative and high-quality LED light strips. You can install these lights in various locations for a captivating glow that enhances your car’s visual appeal.

Below are some of the cool ways to make your car a true reflection of your personality and style:

1. Vinyl Wraps: Transform Your Car’s Appearance

Vinyl wraps offer a remarkable opportunity to transform your BMW’s appearance in a highly customizable and temporary manner. The versatility of vinyl wraps enables you to customize your vehicle’s appearance to suit your preferences with a wide array of colors, finishes, and textures. Whether you seek a sleek matte black, a vibrant metallic hue, or even a distinctive pattern or design, vinyl wraps provide limitless possibilities for showcasing your unique style. Additionally, these wraps serve as a protective layer, shielding your car’s original paint from potential damage, such as scratches and UV rays.

Professionally installed and easily removable, vinyl wraps leave no permanent alterations to your vehicle’s exterior. Offering a cost-effective and adaptable solution, vinyl wraps provide an excellent way to refresh your car’s aesthetics, leaving a remarkable impression on the road.

They are also removable, allowing you to change the look whenever you desire without damaging the underlying paint. Whether you prefer a bold and flashy look or a more subtle and sophisticated style, vinyl wraps provide a versatile solution to personalize your car’s exterior.

2. Customized Wheels: Roll in Style

One thing that draws people’s attention to a car is its wheels. Upgrading your wheels boosts your car’s performance and adds a unique flair to its exterior. Customized wheels come in a wide range of styles, finishes, and sizes to suit your taste and complement your vehicle’s design.

Consider selecting alloy or forged wheels featuring distinctive designs or finishes that resonate with your individual aesthetic. From a classic to a sporty look, countless options exist to suit your unique style. You can pick varying colors, such as matte black, gunmetal, or chrome, to add a personalized touch that sets your BMW apart from the rest.

3. Window Tinting: Style and Privacy Combined

Window tinting is not only a practical addition to your BMW car, but also a fantastic way to personalize its exterior. Tinted windows provide privacy and protection from harmful UV rays, and also give your vehicle a sleek and sophisticated appearance. Available in different shades and darkness levels, you can select your preferred window tint and enhance your car’s overall look.

Besides boosting the aesthetics, window tinting helps maintain your BMW’s interior cooler by reducing the sun’s heat and glare. This can improve your driving experience, especially during the hot summer months. Window tints also provide a level of security by making it harder for potential thieves to see inside your vehicle.

Remember to check local regulations regarding window tinting, as there may be specific laws governing the darkness and placement of tinted windows. It’s essential to adhere to these regulations to avoid any legal issues.

Endnote

Personalizing your vehicle’s exterior is a fun and creative way to demonstrate your style and make it truly unique. From wrapping your car in a vibrant vinyl design to upgrading to customized wheels and tinting your windows for added style and privacy, these cool customization options can transform your car into a reflection of your personality. So go ahead, unleash your creativity, and give your BMW the personalized touch it deserves.

Hey… did you know that tuning isn’t only about making cars more obnoxious and louder? It’s actually mostly about improving performance, be it power and torque or fuel efficiency. All to gain full confidence when accelerating, overtaking or merging onto a highway, as well as to save fuel under regular driving conditions.

Yep, you read that correctly: by having your BMW engine tuned, you can make it less thirsty. Not only that, with a proper tune, you are also looking at potential increases in reliability.

But how do you go about BMW ECU tuning? Read on to find out the most important aspects of it and see which bimmer engines are good performance improvement candidates.

What Makes a BMW Engine Good for a Tune Up?

There are only a handful of “ingredients” that determine whether or not an engine is right for tuning. That being said, each of them is very important, so if you are considering a BMW tune, take a look at the list below.

Aspiration type – turbocharged engines are much more tuneable than naturally aspirated ones, because there are more parameters that can be controlled to affect the performance.

Design durability – what you want from a good tuning platform is plenty of OEM reliability. The tune itself will help improve the longevity, but the more robust an engine is from the factory, the more safety margins you’ll have.

Engine condition – for tuning, a BMW engine has to be well maintained, according to a regular checkup schedule, along with timely oil and filter changes, and spark plug inspections.

Based on those three aspects, it’s easier to specify which power plants are better suited for tuning than others. So, what are they?

BMW Engines Perfect for Tuning

In the world of various BMW performance upgrades, there are a couple of designs that are definitely tune-worthy. They are characterized by respectable durability margins and reasonable factory power output. Additionally, they are relatively well thought out, at least in most cases.

Let’s dive deeper into the specifics of the abovementioned engines.

BMW B58 Engine Specs and Reliability

The largest of the Bavarians’ modular power plant family, the BMW B58 engine is their latest representative of the inline-six breed introduced in 2015. Depending on the variant and application, it pumps out 322–382 HP and 450–500 Nm of torque. It has forged aluminum piston rods and crankshaft, as well as a closed deck block.

This means the design is very robust from the get-go and it can handle power gains well. It also greatly aids the reliability of the BMW B58 engine, giving it a long-lasting potential, which can be improved even more with appropriate BMW B58 tune… But more on that later.

The BMW B58 engine is used on almost all current production 40i bimmers, including:

BMW 340i (F30/F31/F34)

BMW 440i (F32/F33/F36)

BMW M240i (F22/F23)

BMW 540i (G30/G31)

BMW M340i (G20/G21)

BMW M440i (G22)

Another representative of the modular family, the BMW B48 engine comes in the shape of a more compact four-banger. The Bavarians managed to squeeze out 154–255 HP and 250–400 Nm of torque from it. Thanks to the modularity of the designs, the very same forged piston rods that go into the B58 are also used in B48. In addition, similarly to its bigger brother, the inline-four also has a closed deck aluminum engine block.

Although the B engines are all relatively new, their hefty internal components bode really well for their base longevity. They also make for a solid tuning platform.

In what cars can you find the BMW B48 engine?

BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, and 5 Series 20i, 30i or 30e models after 2014

Toyota Supra (J29)

BMW B46 Engine Specs and Reliability

Despite the BMW B46 engine being almost identical to the B48, it’s still worth explaining the different numbering. After all, you might’ve already come across this designation. BMW B46 is basically a version of B48 that complies with the American SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) requirements. The changes include distinct air intake, sensors, catalytic converters, and factory tune adjusted to those parts.

From the perspective of BMW ECU tuning or reliability, there are no significant differences between the two. The B46 was installed basically in the same models as B48, only destined for the US market.

BMW B38 Engine Specs and Reliability

The smallest and the first engine of the modular B family, this inline-three was introduced in 2013 along with the BMW i8 hybrid. The two versions it comes in (1.2 and 1.5 L) are available with outputs of 74–228 hp and 150–320 NM of torque.

Although it might seem like a lot of horses out of such a tiny engine, thanks to its durable construction, you still have some room for extra power gains. But, most importantly, engine tuning can help you take some load off of it.

As the lowest-displacement member of the family, B38 engine was meant for the lower trims of BMWs and the budget cars like:

Introduced in 2006, the BMW N54 was the Bavarians’ first turbocharged gasoline engine. It took advantage of two turbos to produce 302–335 hp and 400–450 Nm of torque. Similarly to the later B58 engine, it used forged internal components (piston rods and crankshaft), but its engine block was of open deck design.

The BMW N54 engine is able to handle increased boost pressures really well and has a lot of potential for longevity improvements with ECU tuning. Below you’ll find a short list of models that were powered by this power plant:

An evolution of the previous design, the BMW N55 engine was produced from 2009 and gradually replaced the N54 in many applications. It was rated at 302–365 hp and 400–465 Nm of torque, depending on the version. Instead of two turbos, BMW used only one twin-scroll turbocharger, which made the motor lighter than the N54.

Similarly to its predecessor, the BMW N55 engine is quite strong and tolerates power increases well. This means that along with taking a few years off of it, with tuning you’ll be able to gain some extra “juice,” to help you overtake other cars swiftly.

If you are into Bavarian engines, you might think that the BMW N20 isn’t really suitable for tuning. Although it had its share of problems right after its inception, they have mostly been solved. Moreover, one of the issues that troubled this design was related to high intake air temperatures it experienced. Which is something that can be easily remedied by a proper ECU tune that will lower how hot the engine is running overall.

Introduced in 2011, this turbo inline-four was a replacement for a naturally aspirated straight-six N53 engine. It came in two displacement versions (1.6 and 2.0 L) and produced 168–241 hp and 250–350 Nm of torque.

As a predecessor of the B48, it was installed in a similar range of cars (with the exception of 30i BMW models) until it was replaced by the latter after 2017. Examples of N20-powered vehicles include:

BMW 220i/228i (F22)

BMW 320i/328i (F30)

BMW Engines Good for Tuning – Honorable Mentions

Apart from the power plants described up to this point, there are also other BMW engines that are really well-suited for ECU tuning. They are at the bottom of the list not because of their small potential, but due to the fact that they already are extremely powerful in their stock form.

However, if you wanted to, their durable internal components offer great safety reserves for additional power gains. So, which of these designs are a perfect match for engine tuning?

BMW S55 – a performance version of the N55 introduced in the BMW M3 (F80), with different variants producing 275–493 hp and up to 600 Nm of torque. Manufactured from 2014 to 2021.

BMW S63 – the strongest engine currently offered in the Bavarian lineup, this twin-turbo 4.4 L V8 powers the top-of-the-line M cars, like BMW M5 (F90) and M8 (F91/92/93), as well as their Competition variants. Produced from 2009, this power plant makes up to 635 hp and 750 Nm of torque.

BMW S58 – based on the B58 but heavily revised, this engine debuted in BMW X3 M (F97) and X4 M (F98) in 2019. Currently still in production and used on models like the latest BMW M3 (G80), it pumps out 453–503 hp and 550–650 Nm of torque.

There are many variables that have to be taken into account when tuning an engine. If you were to try changing any parameters within your BMW’s ECU, you would be at risk of damaging or even destroying the engine. Because of this, a remote tuning service like Awaken Performance by BimmerTech is your best bet.

During an online coding session, their technician does everything for you: they introduce necessary ECU changes and make your engine work at a lower operating temperature. As a result, it also drinks less gasoline (if you don’t change your driving style), and delivers power more smoothly. All while increasing the longevity of your car.

How to Take Care of a BMW Engine after Tuning?

After you’ve decided to give BMW ECU tuning a go, just don’t neglect the maintenance of your car. Use the best quality fuels (octane rating higher than 93 in US and at least 98 in Europe) and motor oils, and regularly inspect everything. And, most importantly, enjoy your car as if it was brand new, again!

To get Apple CarPlay on a BMW, you will need to make sure your vehicle is compatible with the feature and then have it installed by a BMW dealer. Here’s a general overview of the process:

Check if your BMW is compatible with Apple CarPlay: Not all BMW models are compatible with Apple CarPlay. You can check if your vehicle is compatible by going to the BMW website and looking up the specs for your specific model.

Make sure your BMW has the latest version of the BMW Operating System: In order to use Apple CarPlay, your BMW must have the latest version of the BMW Operating System installed. You can check which version you have by going to the “Settings” menu in your vehicle’s iDrive system and selecting “Software Update.” If an update is available, you’ll be able to download and install it through the iDrive system.

Have Apple CarPlay installed by a BMW dealer: Once you’ve verified that your BMW is compatible with Apple CarPlay and has the latest version of the BMW Operating System, you can have the feature installed by a BMW dealer. The dealer will be able to install the necessary hardware and software to enable Apple CarPlay on your vehicle. The cost of installation will vary depending on your specific vehicle and location.

What Apple CarPlay can do?

Apple CarPlay is a feature that allows you to access certain apps and features of your iPhone through the display screen of your car’s dashboard. It is designed to provide a safer and more convenient way to use your phone while driving. With CarPlay, you can make phone calls, send and receive text messages, listen to music, and use other features of your iPhone without having to pick up your phone or take your eyes off the road. To use CarPlay, you will need a car that is equipped with the feature and a compatible iPhone.

How to setup Apple CarPlay on a BMW?

To set up Apple CarPlay, you will need an Apple iPhone that is compatible with the system, as well as a car that is compatible with Apple CarPlay.

Connect your iPhone to your car using a Lightning-to-USB cable.
If your car supports wireless CarPlay, press and hold the Voice Control button on your steering wheel to set up CarPlay. If your car doesn’t support wireless CarPlay, you’ll need to connect your iPhone to your car with a cable.
On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay.
Select your car from the list, then follow the onscreen instructions.
If your car doesn’t support CarPlay, you can use an aftermarket system that is compatible with CarPlay. These systems typically consist of a display unit that is installed in your car and a controller that you can use to interact with the system.

Introduction

From 2007 to roughly 2014, the BMW N47 was an inline 4-cylinder diesel engine that was used in the BMW 1, 2, 3, and 5 series, as well as the X1 and X3 diesel models.

The N47 engine series is prone to early timing chain failure due to severe timing chain wear. The situation is indicated by a rattling noise coming from the engine’s rear. Failure of the timing chain may necessitate engine replacement or a costly repair. The problem affects all applications and power variations of the engine manufactured between March 1, 2007 and March 1, 2011. The most severely damaged units, which require the most substantial repairs, were manufactured between the dates of 01.03.2007 and 05.01.2009. UPDATE – It appears that a small number of engines made after the recall are having problems.

Timing chain

The timing chain on this engine is sandwiched between the engine and the transmission at the back of the engine. Its replacement is especially difficult because it is located in such an inaccessible location. In most cases, parts installed in such inaccessible locations are intended to survive the life of the engine, but not in this situation. The timing chain in the N47 can fail anywhere from 40 to 100k miles, causing catastrophic engine damage as its components lose synchronization.

Diagnosis – Symptoms of a Failing Timing Chain

The symptoms of a failed timing chain usually appear gradually as the chain becomes longer and more worn. As a result, you’re unlikely to detect a sudden dramatic symptom until the chain is near to break completely. Instead, think about how your vehicle is performing today and how it performed many months ago. Small issues could suggest that the chain is about to fail completely.

Here are some of the signs that your timing chain is failing:

Rough idling: Start your automobile and walk away. It’s possible that the timing chain is wearing out if it shakes or vibrates more than usual. Of course, there are other issues that could result in harsh idling, but the issue is always worth investigating because it tends to worsen over time.

Strange noises: You might hear your N47 engine rattle, especially when it’s idling, but not only when it’s idling. The issue could be that the timing chain is loose and rattling against anything else if the sound is persistent and rough.

Metal shavings in the oil: Over time, the timing chain will wear down. When it reaches the end of its useful life, it may emit metal shavings. If it does, it will end up in your engine oil, perhaps causing further issues. However, any worn-out portion of your car can produce metal shavings, so it’s worth looking into before merely replacing the chain.

Engine failures: If your BMW would not start, the chai may be damaged and not supplying enough pressure to start the engine. If the chain breaks while you’re driving, it’s possible that the timing chain has broken as well. If this occurs, the pistons may be broken, and the belt problem may cause more damage to your car.

Engine misfires: Your N47 engine may misfire before the chain has completely snapped. The cam and the crankshaft are linked by a chain. The chain might cause the vehicle to skip a gear on either the crankshaft or the camshaft if it is overly stretched out. It will become more stressed as a result of this, and it will eventually break.

Check engine light is on: Of course, the check engine light could signal a large variety of things have gone wrong with your BMW. However, it’s possible that the timing chain has failed or is soon to fail.

Replacement and Repairs

Because the timing chain is in such an inaccessible location, the mechanic must totally remove the engine from its bay to gain access to it. Taking the engine out is a massive and difficult undertaking in and of itself. Following that, another lengthy disassembly is required to gain access to the chains themselves.

Three timing chains are included in the timing chain replacement kit: one for the oil pump, one for the camshaft, and one for the high-pressure fuel pump. You’ll also need the looking tool kit to keep the crankshaft and camshaft synchronized while you’re working on them. These are the primary tasks that must be completed after removing the engine from the bay in order to replace the timing chains.

To begin, make sure that cylinders 1 and 4 are at top dead center in order to retain the point for synchronizing the points.

With the tools you have, lock your crank shafts at this location.

Remove the camshaft chain tensioner to loosen the chain a little, and loosen the three bolts on the camshaft sprocket.

It will be easier to remove the fuel pump sprocket if the high-pressure fuel pump is turned off.

Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft by removing the bolts that hold it in place.

Remove the starter motor’s bolts to gain access to the oil sump.

By undoing the necessary bolts, you can remove the oil sump.

Remove the timing cover by loosening the nuts that hold it in place. It will take some prying and a few mild taps with the hammer. You can now access all of the chains and sprockets.

By loosening the bolts, you may now remove the oil pump sprocket and the oil pump guides. Remove the oil pump’s chain as well.

Similarly, remove the camshaft sprocket’s guides and tensioner, as well as the sprocket and belt.

After TDC, twist the crankshaft 45 degrees and remove the high-pressure fuel pump tensioner, guides, and sprockets. Take off the belt and the sprockets as well.

The last item is your oil sprayer, which you may remove for replacement if necessary.

Then, in reverse order, install the replacement belts, ensuring that all components are in sync until the conclusion.

Conclusion

This timing chain issue is a design flaw in the engine, and the only method to remedy it is to avoid cars with this N47 engine or, if possible, get rid of it in working order. Because of the emission control equipment put in it, such as the EGR and DPF, this engine also has a lot of issues.

Are you a car enthusiast looking for the best ways to upgrade the speed of your car? As you head to a BMW performance shop for car parts, look to options that add efficiency and durability. By making these factors a priority, your BMW will be able to perform at a high level.

As they say at CarBahn Autoworks, “With the best car parts, your car will gain power and be more mobile.” When you strive for top-quality upgrades, you can customize your car to meet your exact needs.

Today, we’ll discuss some of the best ways you can make your BMW go faster.

Set Up A Large Diameter Throttle Body

One of the best things you can do for your BMW is to set up a large diameter throttle body. A throttle body helps to regulate the airflow going into your car’s engine. The LDTB is a central part of your car since its engine needs air to ignite more efficiently.

When you install an LDTB with large flaps, it allows more air to flow into your engine. With throttle bodies that deliver air at a higher rate, your car will be able to speed up faster.

Before you head to a BMW performance shop, think about making installing an LDTB part of your plans. You’ll stand to be on track to increase the overall performance of your BMW.

Look To Upgrade Your Air Intake System

Air intake systems contain a pipe with an air filter at the end. What this system does is that it allows your car’s engine to bring in more air. BMW engines run on a mixture of air and fuel. These elements allow for your car to breathe easier and run more efficiently.

As you enhance your car’s air intake system, you’ll want to ensure that your engine receives cold air. By helping your car take in more cold air, you can increase its power. With more power comes a faster speed for your BMW.

Work To Upgrade The Fuel System Of Your Car

While at a BMW performance shop, you can complement your car’s air intake system by upgrading its fuel system. Below is a list of high-flow fuel system parts you’ll need to help enhance the performance of your BMW:

Filters

Injectors

Pumps

You’ll also need a sizable gas line to help your car consume more fuel in each cylinder. These parts help provide your BMW with the appropriate air/fuel ratio it needs for a faster speed. With the latest fuel system, you’ll be able to enhance your BMW’s performance.

Look To Upgrade Your Exhaust System

You can also enhance your car’s speed by upgrading its exhaust system. The exhaust system is another prime component that helps determine the overall performance of your BMW.

With a new or aftermarket BMW performance exhaust, you can ease the flow of the exhaust. What this measure does is that it helps reduce the amount of engine restriction. It also frees up some of the power in your car’s engine. With these efforts, your BMW stands to gain a faster speed and reach its potential.

Invest In New Electric Fans For Your Car

Each BMW car has a fan that pulls air through the radiator. It works to keep the engine at a cool and functioning temperature. Some older BMW cars have mechanical fans that draw power away from the engine.

If you have an older BMW model, replacing your old fan with an electric one can help benefit you. A new electric fan will help free up some of your BMW’s horsepower. Taking measures like these can help you gain more speed while on the road.

Tune The ECU System Of Your Car

ECU tuning is a software update that removes factory restraints on a car to improve its performance. Below are two ways you can tune a BMW engine:

Tuning Box

A tuning box works by changing the signal between the software and the fuel injection system. These efforts help increase the amount of fuel injection and enable the engine to boost pressure.

Full Engine Management System

A FEMS can serve you well if you have highly tuned cars or require maximum tunability measures. Here are some ways a FEMS helps boost performance:

Ensures the right engine fuel amount

Inspects your engine speed and load

Provides ignition spark

Tracks engine temperature

Either measure helps your BMW gain fuel efficiency and speed in the process.
