When BMW decided to go front-wheel drive with the new 2-Series Active Tourer and Grand Tourer, that was a risky decision but it seems that the German carmaker knows how to gamble.

And we could tell that it hit the jackpot, as both models are selling extremely well in Europe, managing a third place, after Citroen and Volkswagen Touran.

JatoDnamics via AutoNews has issued a recent report according to which BMW managed to sell 77,644 of the 2-Series Active Tourer and Grand Tourer models in the European Union and Europe Free Trade Association, or simply put EFTA, being outrun only by Citroen with the C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso, with 85,390 units, as well as by Volkswagen Touran, with 88,169 vehicles.

In case you want to know which carmaker takes fourth place in Europe and EFTA, this is occupied by Ford, with the C-MAX and Grand-Max, with 64,016 units sold, shortly followed by Mercedes-Benz B-Class, with 56,325. The account refer to the period between January and September.

As a reminder, the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer & Grand Tourer were officially launched at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, both versions being the first ones to come with a front-wheel drive, a premiere which seemed to upset BMW customers that loved the rear-wheel drive setup.

Both versions stand on the company`s new UKL front-wheel drive platform, the same one found on the all-new X1 or MINI models, meaning that they come with improved and more lightweight materials and increase space inside for passengers and their luggage.

During the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer media launch in Innsbruck, Austria, the BMW Product Manager Jochen Schmalholz, had the chance to explain the Active Tourer in some more details.

First off, as Schmalholz mentions, the “BMW concept” might be somehow lost with the unveiling of the latest 2-Series Active Tourer with front-wheel drive, the chief also ensuring that the legacy will be carried on by the future production of the 7-seater Active Tourer and a hybrid version.

A reason to still choose the 2-Series Active Tourer as a genuine BMW vehicle, is that inside, the model offers enough space just as the larger X vehicles, coming with 4,342 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,555 mm high.

With the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer to be the company`s first car to come with a front-wheel drive, the model is also the first to be fitted with a three-cylinder unit, which also allows to efficiently use the space inside.

The BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will be first launched in Europe and China, with a 40 percent sales on the Old Continent and 15 percent sales in the most important Asian country.

The BMW 2-Series Family Tourer is ending up in our news again in new shots, while the model was seen on public roads, during some tests.

The BMW German based automaker is trying to consolidate its 2-Series lineup, by adding a new model, the Family Tourer, which will stand on the same platform as the current Active Tourer.

The BMW 2-Series Family Tourer will resemble its sibling Active Tourer, with some slight modifications at the back, as the model in question will be coming in a 7-seat version.

The two extra seats at the back will be destined for children only, as the space will not allow enough space for adult passengers.

The future BMW 2-Series Family Tourer will be a little bit longer and taller at the rear, also to use the same engine lineup found on the same Active Tourer model.

We are talking about a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel units, while the range topping 2.0-liter unit, will develop 231 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, the engine being hooked to an all-wheel drive, in the 228i xDrive.

The BMW 2-Series Family Tourer will be perhaps unveiled at the end of the year, with future details to be known at that moment.

We have new information regarding the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer with M Sport Package. The BMW Active Tourer has been put to some slight modifications here and there lately, as it will now receive an M Sport kit.

The four-door model with front-drive wheels Active Tourer will bring a different approach to what used to represent, as the M Sport kit is really unique.

The M Sport kit first gives the Active Tourer a more aggressive aero kit, retuned suspension, a blacked-out grille and 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

More than that, the M Sport also brings fresh tweaks inside the BMW Active Tourer. By fresh tweaks I mean sports seats all trimmed in blue-stitched Alcantara.

On top of all features, stands the great paint job that fully wraps the Tourer in an Estoril Blue color, making it the perfect family vehicle.

The top of the line 225i Active Tourer comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that develops 231 horsepower.

The other version, the 218i Active Tourer sports a smaller 1.5-liter triple engine with a rough136 ponies. THe diesel 218d four-cylinder will be soon render.

The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer has received its first unveil at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, with two fresh premiere changes like front-wheel drive and first MPV to be launched.

If we take a closer look at the pictures, the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer looks quite similar like the Ford B-Max, having an angular rear and back headlights resembling the new MINI, but being longer than the 1-Series.

The MPV will feature a five-seat version, with an extended 2-seat to be enhanced next year. The BMW Active Tourer has a split rear seats, allowing the possibility for its passengers to carry large objects between.

Apart from the entry-level, the model will also come in the SE, in the Sport, the Luxury and the M Sport trim levels, with the latter being launched in 2015.

As for the range of the engine, the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will come with the 218i, being powered by a 3.0-liter petrol developing 136 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque.

Its colleague 225i xDrive, will sport a 2.0 petrol engine, developing 170 ponies, while the 218d Active Tourer will be sporting a turbocharged common rail diesel, generating a good 150 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque.

Finally, the BMW 2-Series will be complete with the 220i, the 216d, the 220d and the 220xDrive, November this year.

BMW has been teasing us with some rumors for some time now, concerning the launch of the next generation of the Active Tourer, which seemed to be quite false in terms of specs and details.

The long expected 2 Series Active Tourer, rendered with a rear-wheel system, is in fact the BMW`s first front-wheel drive sedan ever launched, ready to hit the American auto dealers next year.

Since it is a premiere for the German automaker to put an FWD system on its Tourer, significant changes have also been made to its wheelbase, coming with much more cargo space.

The BMW FWD 2 Series Active Tourer sports almost the same looks as its previous versions, except for some finer lines and blunter nose.

As for the interior though, the 2 Series Active Tourer has been modified for better usage, featuring a sliding rear seat, backrests which can now be adjustable, automatic tailgate or panoramic sunroof.

The Tourer lineup will be equipped with 3 engines. The 218i Active Tourer will sport a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder, followed by the 225i Active Tourer with 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, finishing with the 218d Active Tourer with 2.0-liter turbodiesel and 148 hp.

Along with the development of the BMW`s front-wheel drive based on Concept Active Courier, the compact MPV was expected to arrive under the badge of a 1-Series.

But the BMW`s compact MPV was just spotted wearing a 225i badge, which is a confirmed statement that the vehicle will arrive under the new 2-Series range.

A senior manager at BMW has let word that the decision was made due to the fact that the compact MPV is significantly bigger that the present 1-Series hatchback sold in the U.S., and it that it will cost more.

So, the full name of the compact MPV would be BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. To confuse us even worse, there was also a seven-seat version in works, to bear the name 2-Series Gran Coupe.

But we will be able to find out more about this confusing news, as the new compact MPV is preparing its grand debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, early this March. Sales are expected to hit the US market in the first part of 2015.

The so much expected BMW Active Tourer Outdoor concept was officially announced to be launched on 12th of July.

The OutDoor Friedrichshafen exhibition for 2013 will be the host of this event. Meanwhile, the German car maker is trying to keep the elements of novelty as secret as possible.

What we do know however about BMW Active Tourer Outdoor is the fact that it should provide an improved functionality in terms of spatial repartition, a more dynamic design and enhanced comfort.

BMW fans must already be aware that we are talking about a second version – BMW Active Tourer Outdoor concept, this time addressed to those who love spending lots of time outdoors in nature.

The first version, which we got to met last year during the Paris Auto Motor Show, was the first front wheel drive model, featuring a hybrid powertrain (electric motor + 1.5 liter engine, twin turbo), what can we expect from the new BMW Active Tourer Outdoor?

Rumors say that it should keep the same powering system, looking more into the practical design. Lucky for us, there are less than three weeks left until there will be no more secrets about it.
