BMW is preparing the launch a new era of high tech luxury car, for its segments on the go, and no matter what some may think, the car manufacturer might be a winner this year in front of Mercedes-Benz`s models.

I am referring to the fresh new X1 that has been reviewed for several times now and all things came surprisingly well and impressed. The BMW X1 is actually a multitude of parts, taking the platform from E8X or E9X or adding the N20 and the great ZF 8 speed auto.

The X1 is thus a very enjoyable drive with a lots of efficiency and utility features. On top of that, if you take the AWD 2.0 four-cylinder from N20 and put it on the X1, you have one of the best BMWs in the recent history.

IS the new F48 front wheel drive based worthy of these compliments from its fellow BMW vehicles? If it does, then the car would be lighter and perhaps a little bit smaller, as it would be based on the same platform as the next generation of MINI Countryman.

It would also come with electronically boosted steering which sometimes may lead to a lack of natural flaw on the road. Instead, the car is happy to deliver more space inside, better efficiency and more technology. Sounds like a blast?

The shock just won’t wear off. Before we even got used to the idea of a front wheel drive BMW it felt like it was already getting here.

A little time did pass since then but new it seems that the 1 Series GT is right around the corner for production and the UKL platform it rides on gains popularity.

A lot of the popularity does come from emerging markets and the simple appeal of profitability found within front wheel drive.

Moreover, the recent talk about BMW’s attempt at making twelve new models riding on the platform is starting to go over the top.

Somebody inside BMW have found a few more ideas they could spin-off into the front wheel drive rhythm so that a total of 20 such models could end up existing.

I’m almost lost for words. There was no denying that BMW is a company which works at its best towards making money.

There’s no doubt, in my mind, that the upcoming front wheel drive BMW units will be a joy to drive and have a premium feel about them.

Somehow, the announcement to expand a new idea so far that it would be come a bread winner from a small niche market, isn’t the most desirable thing in the world.

Then again, if I remember correctly, announcing that BMW is about to make an SUV had the world sitting with its back side on fire and the X5 is doing brilliantly.

What happens when you mix a BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe and the infamous BMW M6? You get one of the soon to be unveiled models in the Bavarian company’s lineup.

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe is scheduled to receive a 2014 modelyear release and it was just recently spied testing all over the place.

There’s some photos of it going around the regular roads we use on a day to day basis and then there’s a short video of it tearing round the Nurburgring.

Not that the F10 M5 or the F12/F13 M6 can’t tickle your funny bones but the M6 Gran Coupe isn’t going to be the same.

The platform is to be shared, most of the technical stuff is actually going to be the same but kicked up a notch, or as some would say, to 11.

The 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine is exactly the same in terms of internals and probably gets the same turbochargers but the power should go beyond the ever popular 560 horsepower.

More importantly, the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is also likely to get the same gearbox setup. The seven speed M-DCT automatic will be there but the six speed manual gearbox has quite a chance.

Whichever way that ends up going, the new M6 Gran Coupe will not come cheap. After all, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is one exclusively select package.

There have been estimates of this incredibly rare and special vehicle starting at somewhere around 120.000 USD.

As James May once eloquently put it, BMW think Front Wheel Drive is the work of Satan. That was quite a while back and the idea stood true.

Nowadays however it seems that practicality is beating one of the core ideas out of the Bavarian brand. We’ve been threatened with a FWD BMW for a while now and it seems we’ve got news of the first one.

Surprisingly, it’s not going to be the 1 Series or any compact that would slot in below it. It is actually going to be the next generation of the BMW X1.

Granted, the next generation of the BMW 1 Series will follow suit, and there will probably be other models to cross the same path, but the X1 will be remembered as the betrayer.

The small crossover will share its platform with another product of the BMW Group that nestles in these traits, namely the Mini Countryman.

It’s not the sharpest thing in the world to drive but it does well for a crossover and while I’m certain BMW will make it even better, a little part inside me has died.

Aside from this bit of bad news, I’m not very impressed with the way BMW will also be updating the powerplant choices.

The six cylinder big boys are going to be eliminated and apart from keeping the smaller four pots, there’s also a good chance that we’ll see the 1.5 liter three cylinder in there.

Overall, not the most impressive ideas are coming together in the next BMW X1. The BMW brand dilution is not cool but then again crossovers and SUVs shouldn’t be there either.

2012 will be an excellent year for people looking into buying a small hatchback as it’ll be the year we will be seeing the launch of the Audi A1, the Mercedes A and B Class and, of course, the BMW 1 Series.

The latter will be the one of most interest to us and what gets our attention in particular is the components that will go into it.

Most likely, BMW will shove quite a lot of the components that are to be found on the 3 Series into the next generation of 1 series.

This may happen either because BMW want to create a sensation of downsizing without downgrading or perhaps because of the new plans to cut costs at BMW. Either way this is pretty good news as the 3 Series is well built and well equipped.

The most important component to be found placing in both platforms will be the new four-cylinder turbo engine from the E90 3 Series added to which there is the possibility of a new three cylinder engine on both vehicles.

Should we take into account the success of the implementation of 7 Series components to the F10 BMW 5 Series the 2012 1 Series shows great promise.

News on any BMW 1 Series hybrid or electric are still unavailable.
