The BMW German based automaker is somehow forced to change its fuel-consumption policies since more stringent limitations have been set to deal with polluting emissions.

Thus, the company has to deal with the new limits imposed on the CO2 emissions in the regions that the automaker operates, like Europe, Asia and the US.

And since the BMW manufacturer is the biggest premium manufacturer in the entire world, the company would find it easier to deal with these limits, since it has alread dealt with this problem, launching on the markets new low-efficient vehicles.

But the company doesn’t stop here and tries to better cope with the low-emissions issues and come up with vehicles that would be more fuel-efficient.

Thus, after launching the profitable and well-received all electric i3, the BMW automaker is ready to head on and launch in August a plug-in sports car, which is the top of the range BMW i8.

Analyst Tim Urquhart from the ISH BMW Automotive stated that the amount of the R&D being spent on the materials, is worthwhile, since it would prove the utility of the electrification techniques for a cleaner environment.

“But what is really important, the “i” vehicles are turning into fantastic brand builders for BMW,” Urquhart also stated.

When you think BMW, you think either rear wheel drive or all wheel drive, and that is part of the appeal of the German brand.

And truly, for a sound experience of a premium, performance car, a BMW seems to be the right choice.

But things might not remain quite so pure for long, as the year 2020 is drawing in. With it, a new legislation will take effect in Europe, pretty much imposing new CO2 emission standards to each and every car maker desiring to sell their products in the old continent.

The BMWs, great as they might be, are sorely lacking in this department. For good reasons too, as the German car maker is somewhat a specialized brand. They even declared publicly that without government support, it is an impossible task. This comes just after VW was announcing they were on track for the 2020 deadline.

So what would be an elegant solution to the problem? Well, in order to lower the average emission over the whole lineup, BMW will be introducing FWD cars. While this might be a blasphemy for certain fans, should the move solve their issues, I am certain that buyers will be found for pretty much any kind of BMW.

As you might know, come 2020, the European emission standards are going to be stricter.

And while the car makers all struggle to get greener cars on the road, some find it harder than others.

BMW is a prime example for not going down without a fight in the CO2 emissions struggle. While they are implementing lower capacity engines, they still think the new standards are harsh, and reaching them is close to impossible without outside financial aid (i.e. government).

On the other hand, Volkswagen seems to be happy with the new CO2 emission standards, being very optimistic in their chances to reach them by the deadline.

And while Volkswagen is making strides and are happy to report their new numbers, BMW seems to be trying to hide them. Reports show that the emission disclosed by BMW are actually some 30 percent below real-world emissions, probably trying to save some face. Audi is in a similar situation, releasing numbers 28 percent lower than in reality.

So car companies’ policies differ in relation with these standards, and with only 7 more years to go until the deadline, it’s uncertain if things will change.

The year 2020 is creeping closer and car makers are struggling to meet the new CO2 emission standards set for Europe. Volkswagen is already well underway to meet that deadline.

And while all car makers agree that the environment is important and do want to help protect it, some might think that the new standards are too high to meet.

BMW is part of this camp, considering the target set for 2020 is impossible to reach. This target refers to an overall 30% decrease in CO2 emissions, and BMW considers that this standard is just a political promise that was made with insufficient data considering technology evolution.

For BMW to reach the levels of CO2 expected by 2020, huge amounts of money would have to be poured into technology research and development. And it’s not like the German car maker isn’t trying to go greener. There are a lot of projects funded by BMW to further this very end, like hydrogen collection, alternatives for EV charging and so on.

A prime example of BMW’s efforts are the i3 and i8 “born electric” vehicles. The BMW i3 will hit the markets this year, while the BMW i8 will follow in 2014.
