Ever since it was first announced, the BMW i3 started to capture a lot of attention with enthusiasts and media.

Soon after the concept version was presented to the world, spy photos started pouring in from all corners of the world. Now a new batch of shots display more of the highly anticipated electric vehicle.

The first photos of the BMW i3 displayed a vehicle draped in camouflage, and soon after, the top half of the car was caught undisguised. With this latest spy shot, the BMW i3 finally sheds some more camo, with only a small area still using the blue disguise.

BMW has big expectation from its first “born-electric” city car, and the car maker spared no expense in making a premium product. The vehicle will be using a full carbon fiber passenger cell and for those that need to get more miles out of it, a range extender will be optional.

The i3 Bimmer will be able to develop some 170 Hp and it will be presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The range expected is around 160 km on just electric, while the range extender will bring it up to 220 km.

A few days ago we heard that the Zinoro X1 vehicle, which will be exclusive to China, was caught testing in Germany.

In a similar, twisted fashion, the i3 was caught on the camera in the Asian country.

One particular detail that didn’t escape scrutiny is the fact that the plates on the BMW i3 are for Beijing, yet the spy shots were snapped in Shanghai, a full 1.200 km away. Could this mean that the German car maker is testing the new electric car’s range extender, or is it another kind of endurance testing? Or maybe it got lost.

Whichever the case, the BMW i3 has yet to lose any more camouflage, but there is still time until it will be launched. As a reminder, the small electric city car from BMW will be sporting an electric engine and an optional 2 cylinder range extender that will recharge the batteries instead of transferring the power directly to the wheels.

The latest batch of spy shots reveal the electric vehicle BMW plans to release in Frankfurt this September. Well, not all of it, but it lost some camouflage since we last saw it roaming the streets.

With the roof now clear for us to observe and scrutinize, the i3 seems a bit off. It lacks the usual design styling we would expect from a BMW. Not that it looks bad or anything, just seems to deviate from the norm. But then again, the whole car is quite new for the german car manufacturer.

The BMW i3 not only is it a small town car, it is also powered by an electric motor, and this is not something BMW is accustomed to. We will be able to judge more on its appearance when more camo peels off the car. And we give a big thanks to the diligent photographers that never let a car slip by.

After last month we had the opportunity to get in touch the first official details on the new BMW i sub-brand, today, we have the first photos of the new BMW i3, the first model bearing the i badge which will enter the market in 2013.

Benefiting from the LifeDrive architecture, the new BMW i3 promises innovative features such as a a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic cell together with an aluminum chassis and other components, all focused on lightweight and efficiency. For the beginning, BMW plans to build around 30,000 vehicles in the first year.

The first “Born Electric” i model was caught in these spy shots somewhere in a frozen land while BMW was filming most probably a video teaser for i3. These spy shots are very important as are the first pictures that give us key details on the shape and features of the new German eco-friendly model.

The new BMW i3 will be built at the Leipzig factory and the price of the new German model is expected to be around €40,000.
