The day when BMW will mark 100 years of activity is basically around the the corner, with less than two years left on the clock.

So it comes as no surprise that the German car maker has already started making preparations for the celebration.

They decided to start us off with a very nice 60 seconds video showcasing most of their cars throughout the decades, cars that made the company the international automotive industry giant that it is. Admittedly, it is quite hard to squeeze all of their models in such a short video, but they have managed.

The only downside is that a few seconds could have been spared for missing models like the E36, E38, E39 or E60, cars that have been in their own time, iconic for BMW. But while diehard fans might be a bit disappointed, the one minute video remains a very good way to start what promises to be a very interesting 100 years of activity celebration. With the occasion of promoting the BMW S1000 RR sport bike, the manufacturer decided to try something different than the usual commercial, especially considering how technology has evolved. For this reason, the Serviceplan company was chosen to add some subliminal advertising to the clip. See bellow the explanation and full ad.

The Munich-based company used what’s known as an after-image to print the BMW logo on the eyes of the audience that attended the experiment but the logo wasn’t visible on the screen and couldn’t be seen until Ruben Xaus, the star of the clip, gave the magic command “Close your eyes”. When the members of the audience closed their eyes, the logo instantly appeared to everyone’s amazement.

A lot of positive feedback was provided at the end of the screening and this may be an interesting way of promoting something without actually showing any logos. It will be interesting to see if BMW will integrate this in further screenings.

Here is a piece of news that you don’t get to see very often since it’s not about the different BMW models, technologies or awards but about the people that stand in the shadows and actually designed the cars we enjoy so much today. BMW has announced that starting from March 1st 2011 Karim Habib will replace the current Head of Exterior Design for BMW, Anders Warming.

Although his name doesn’t ring a bell to many people (unless you’re in the trade or a BMW fan), Karim Habib actually designed the present BMW 7 Series we can see on the streets. Not only that, but the BMW Concept CS is also his creation.

Habib was employed by BMW right after he studied in California, working in the design department both for the interior and the exterior and learning the trade as he passed through different posts until being promoted to Team Leader, Advanced Design for BMW.

His 10-year career at BMW was halted for two years and he now is getting back on the team. Suffice to say that both Karim Habib and his colleagues are thrilled for him working for BMW. Let’s see what he will have to say regarding BMW’s future models.

The People’s Republic of China is getting more and more attention from car manufacturers from all over the world because of the rapid pace the car market there grows and BMW has big plans for the country: it wants to become the leader of the luxury car segment there and has a plan to achieve this goal.

China has been swallowing luxury cars with such a rapid pace that researchers are estimating 530,000 units sold this year and up to 1.1 million to be sold by 2015 and estimates have also been made regarding the growing of the car market in the country.

To prepare for the increasing demand of luxury cars from the Chinese, BMW is adding more suppliers to its network, from the present 100 up to 160. A leasing business will also take shape in 2012, with great development potential. Also, BMW is planning to increase the number of dealerships in China this year, totalling 200 locations.

These operations have been noticed on the stock market as well, as the BMW stocks have risen to 47.35 euros, with an increase of 10 cents. The company’s stocks have been on the rise, totalling 49 percent for the year 2012.

BMW Group once again has shown that it can hold true to what it promises. Back in the year 2000, the brass at BMW said that the company was heading towards greater sustainability, this being one of its priorities. Now, fast forwarding a couple of years, BMW was called the Supersector leader for the automotive industry. And it seems to be a tradition ever since, because this is the sixth consecutive year for the company.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes has shown once again that BMW is the leader. An interesting fact is that the car manufacturer is the only Supersector from Germany in the whole world, at least for this year.

According to Dr. Norbert Reithnofer, BMW AG Chairman, the company is even more motivated by this event and it can only show that the path it has chosen is the right one and big plans are being created for the future.

This can only bring good news for both the BMW employees and other people interested in the company’s evolution, such as people who invest in stocks. Congratulations to BMW for this achievement.

Looks like the scare that BMW involuntarily gave us because of the worker’s strike in South Africa is finally over since the car makers have reached an agreement with the Numsa union, as to pay a 10 percent rise to the worker’s salaries.

More than one week ago it has been reported that a strike had the result of closing the assembly lines of several car manufacturers including BMW, General Motors Company, Daimler, Nissan Motor Company, Volkswagen, Toyota Motor Company and Ford Motor Company,. The reasons were financial, as the workers demanded increased wages and benefits and their union couldn’t find common ground with the car manufacturers during the negotiations which led to up to 2,100 cars to be lost because of the lack of production.

Now that all has ended and the dust has settled, it has come up that about 17,000 units have been lost because of the strike, but we will see if this will have any effect on the rest of the world since more than half of the annual 420,000 units produced in South Africa are destined for export.
