The BMW`s first high-performance plug-in hybrid i8 has been the one-off sports car bringing performance and technology to a whole new level. But the German based carmaker does not want to rest on its laurels and is already planning an introduction of an updated BMW i8, which would be called the i8 M. This means that the new i8 M will come with some body makeovers as well as a power boost under the hood.

We are talking about some reports coming from Auto Express online publication, according to which an updated BMW i8 should arrive next year, the model coming with some chassis mods and a power boost. Thus, the car`s weight will be cut down, leading to an increase performance under the hood.

The performance of the BMW i8 M would be also increased, especially since BMW has declared that the plug-in hybrid could make room for an additional 300 horsepower. Surely, we won`t expect such a boost, but it would be more performance than the current model. Performance figures would be also significant.

In the current version, the BMW i8 is packing an I3 i.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, hooked to a synchronous motor. Together, they generate an impressive 375 horsepower and 570 Nm of torque, enough to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, at a topping of 250 km/h. Imagine the kind of power figures that a more performance i8 would come with! Do you really think this would happen next year?

BMW has recently announced the MSRP prices for the i8 plug-in hybrid on the United States market, which will become available in its dealerships starting June. One of BMW`s dealerships in US, JMK BMW, New Jersey, has also announced the availability of the BMW i8.

The 2015 BMW i8 will come with a base price of $136,500 in US, without counting the $950 destination and handling fees. The model will come with four packages, each one coming with additional prices. For instance, the Mega package will come standard, while the Giga package will set you back at $2,000, the Tera will cost a higher $3,000, and the Purse Impulse will be set at $10,800.

The 2015 BMW i8 will also be available in four exterior paintjobs, like the Protonic Blue, Ionic Silver, Crystal White and Sophisto Grey. Other than that, BMW will release 1,000 i8 vehicles on the market, this year alone, so if it happens to live in the US and love the model, just head to your nearest BMW dealership and make your deposit now.

As a short reminder, the BMW i8 “green” sports car is taking its power from a hybrid synchronous motor under the hood, developing 131 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque.The synchronous motor is also backed by an I3 1.5-liter turbo unit, developing an additional 228 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, outputting a total of 357 horsepower and 570 Nm of torque.

Before going the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, BMW has also added up some interesting features on the BMW i8. These include the high gloss brake calipers, leather engine cover, as well as the “Pure Impulse Experience Program,” which puts together the “exclusive lifestyle options in the areas of culture, design, travel and gastronomy in keeping with the progressive and sustainable “next premium” approach of the BMW i brand,” to quote some officials from BMW.

The BMW i8 is certainly not a new name but it seems that the Germans needed about three years to take the plug-in hybrid sports car from the drawing board to customers. We’ve talked for the first time about the new BMW i models back in 2011. Last year, the carmaker officially unveiled the new BMW i8 but the first models were delivered this week.

The company organised a special ceremony in Germany, first BMW i8 units being handed to the clients.

BMW also focuses on the laser headlights and say that they are “the first manufacturer worldwide to offer totally new laser-powered headlights in a production vehicle”.

As a reminder, the new BMW i8 sports a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo engine and an electric motor for a total output of 362 horsepower. The hybrid powertrain provides a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4,4 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. These are pretty standard supercar figures but the fuel economy number are impressive.

The BMW i8 averages 2,1 liters/100 km or 134,5 mpg UK. The lithium-ion battery pack provides a zero-emission range of 37 kilometers.

All BMW models have their own personality and distinctive futuristic look, and it now seems that the German based automaker will equip the i8 electric with laser headlights, starting with the 2015 models, which have already entered the production and would come on sales later this year with a starting price of $135,935.

There are a series of advantages that laser lights bring. We are talking about LED lighting offering a better light, being energy efficient and providing a finer control over the incandescent or gas discharge lighting.

Laser lights are different from the basic lighting, because they are monochromatic, with only one wavelength for the lights, rather than the ordinary lights that have color spectrum.

The result is that the light is by far more intense, reaching as far as 600 meters or even double the range of LEDs, with a precise control over the beam pattern.

With this advantage in mind, you save space inside the headlights when installing them on the car, but you will also reduce weight, as one headlight is the equivalent of ten LEDs.

BMW is the first car maker to deliver this technology that has been previously announced by other automakers, as the company is first offering the laser lights as optional on the i8 green.

In the years to come, other BMW models will be receiving laser headlights as standard.
