The BMW German based carmaker has recently introduced the first M4 concept wearing laser lights, and now the company has come back with the M4 Concept Iconic Lights, to showcase the importance of such technology and how it can be implemented in the key situations along the road.

As you can see in the video with the BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights, the carmaker is trying to highlight the technology involved. First off, the M4 is coming with OLED headlights at the rear that perform as indicators in different driving segments.

The laser lights are very important especially during the night, as it enable the driver to instantly recognize any moving activity on the road, with the help of infrared cameras as well. More than that, the laser lights were also implemented not to affect the incoming drivers during bad weather conditions or the night.

They start showing a blue color, but they progressively start turning into a bright color, mimicking the day light, with the help of a phosphor plate that lies inside.

Imagine the power of these laser lights, as they are ten times powerful and coming with a projection range of more than 600 meters.

The BMW`s most powerful plug-in hybrid, the one-off i8, will be from now on available with the long-expected laser lights, which will cost an additional 9,500 euros.

There is a huge difference between the standard LED lights and the optional laser lights, as the latter allows a high beam range for up to 600 meters.

We are talking thus about a double range than the standard LED lights, with the possibility of also increasing the efficiency of the energy by up to 30 percent, compared to the rather low power-saving LEDs.

The BMW Laser Light is also significantly useful at nights, as it provides a better lighting on the roads, due to its intensity, without the fear of heating the surrounding area.

This is partially due to the laser diodes found inside which are ten times smaller than the standard light diodes from the LEDs, helping thus save space inside the headlamp as well as weight.

More than that, the reflector surface can be reduced in size, with the height also to be smaller, from a previous 9 cm to less than 3 cm.

All BMW models have their own personality and distinctive futuristic look, and it now seems that the German based automaker will equip the i8 electric with laser headlights, starting with the 2015 models, which have already entered the production and would come on sales later this year with a starting price of $135,935.

There are a series of advantages that laser lights bring. We are talking about LED lighting offering a better light, being energy efficient and providing a finer control over the incandescent or gas discharge lighting.

Laser lights are different from the basic lighting, because they are monochromatic, with only one wavelength for the lights, rather than the ordinary lights that have color spectrum.

The result is that the light is by far more intense, reaching as far as 600 meters or even double the range of LEDs, with a precise control over the beam pattern.

With this advantage in mind, you save space inside the headlights when installing them on the car, but you will also reduce weight, as one headlight is the equivalent of ten LEDs.

BMW is the first car maker to deliver this technology that has been previously announced by other automakers, as the company is first offering the laser lights as optional on the i8 green.

In the years to come, other BMW models will be receiving laser headlights as standard.
