A couple of months ago, BMW presented us with a working demo of what was then supposed to be their next safety feature that will allow drivers to get home safely even in the darkest nights.

Consisting of a front mounted thermal camera and a bunch of other sensors, the feature allows not just to outline objects and trees based on differences of temperature, but also to recognize potential dangerous situations, by detecting animals or pedestrians.

As with many safety features, some drivers might think that they are useless, or a mere gimmick that can be rendered obsolete by simply driving carefully. After all, such a feature will cost a pretty dollar.

So why not test drive the features, which comes on the new F15 BMW X5, and see exactly how well it fares? To this end, World’s Fastest Car Show grabbed one X5, completely obscured the windshield and set out on the streets of Los Angeles. The end result of that journey can be seen in the video just below, and I, for one, am impressed.

As an added security system, premium car makers like BMW, Audi and Mercedes have been using night vision. And this technology has been in use for a while. But BMW decided it is time to up the ante.

Starting this summer, BMW will be installing on their cars a new and improved night vision system to help you stay safely on the road after dusk.

So what’s so great about this new system? For starters, BMW implemented a specific animal recognition feature that will identify Bambi well before it gets in the headlight’s range. Using thermals cameras to show you what’s ahead on a display, BMW’s system will also take additional steps to ensure you don’t hit anything or anyone.

When the system picks up something alive on a collision course, one of two high performance lights will target and illuminate it, flashing furiously. In case of a higher risk situation, the system will also sound an acoustic warning and the brakes will be set at maximum capacity.

Between avoiding damage to your car and possible manslaughter charges, I’d say the improved night vision system is a good investment.

I heard and read a lot of things about the night vision that comes with the new BMW models; some are very good, some are very bad, nothing at the middle. People talks about the night vision on BMW from at least one year when some spy photographers caught in pictures a M3 facelift that had at the front side a night vision camera.

The new 7 Series is packed with night vision camera and it’s available for everyone; of course, if you give more money for this option because I don’t think that this is included in the stock model. First time when I heard about this feature from 7 Series was on TV, the guy was testing the night vision camera and told to a friend to go 50m in front of the camera to capture him in the night vision but he couldn’t so this is a bad thing told about this night vision feature.

If it really works, this is way too useful because it can help people to avoid a lot of accidents but at the sime time, I think it’s too expensive from what I expect.
