Only few hours ago, BMW officially announced through a press release that the first edition of Automotive Brand Contest brought the Bavarian brand three prizes in “Architecture & Events”, “Concept & Study” and “Exterior” categories. Automotive Brand Contest is a competition presented by the German Design Council, the award ceremony following to be held this fall, on September 13th, at the Frankfurt Motor Show as part of Automotive Designers’ Night.

To begin with, BMW won the award of the “Architecture & Events” category with the SESTOSENSO light installation. This product is made in collaboration with Paul Cocksedge, a British light designed and FLOS.

“Red and white conical lamps are suspended low from the ceiling; as with the headlamps of the BMW, the light source remains concealed here as well. Pop your head inside any of the red lamps of SESTOSENSO, and you will see a video of the BMW 6 Series Coupe on an expansive white wall,” says BMW. The second prize for the “Concept & Study” category goes to the BMW 328 Hommage concept, a model which reminds us the original model but adopts a futuristic approach with a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) along aluminum finish and carefully designed interior.

Lastly, the big prize of the “Exterior” category is given to the new BMW 6 Series Coupe which impressed the audience and jury with its sporty design without compromising the comfort and dynamics. “The Coupe impresses with its alluring design, while compared to its predecessor it boasts further enhanced dynamics, palpably honed comfort features and extended space. Its coupling of superior sporting attributes with exclusive long-distance comfort and a 460-litre boot is highly persuasive”.

The Automotive Brand Contest had to evaluate brands and products in over 15 categories, a wide range of domains such as brand communications, design and management being evaluated. BMW is pleased with these prizes mainly considering that the Automotive Brand Contest is now at its first edition, the Germans looking forward to obtain even better results and of course more awards for their premium products.

The 2010 Engine of the Year contest has concluded and while our favorite Bavarian car maker hasn’t had an overall win or a performance related win the trophies earned are quite amazing.

The judges at the fabled competition gave BMW a prize for three categories, four if you’re willing to count the Mini Cooper S’s victory.

The first win came in the 1.8 to 2.0 liters category and it went to BMW for their 2 liter inline-four diesel delivers 204 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Using this engine the 123d delivers 37 mpg even driven to some serious performance driving.

The next win came at the upper category with the BMW N54 taking the glory in the 2.5 to 3.0 liters section and it is a well worth prize as I don’t recall anybody, ever, having something less than great to say about it.

The Bavarians at BMW get another prize in the 3.0 to 4.0 liter category for the S65 4.0 liter V8 engine that can only be found in the M3. That’s pretty much all you need to know.

As an added bonus, the subsidiary company, Mini took best in class at the 1.4 to 1.8 liter category for the engine in the Cooper S for the combination of performance and fuel efficiency.

BMW’s SUV has just passed an important marker in the life of any car, the “first million” to be produced since the debut the X5 had back in 1999.

The “round figure” BMW X5 sold was an anniversary edition xDrive35i, featuring a sapphire black metallic finish with cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim for the interior.

The fabled vehicle, which is headed for a customer in China, rolled of the production line at BMW’s Spartanburg plant, which has been around for 15 years now and has played a huge role in the success story of the X5.

The X5, which is now being built in Spartanburg, U.S.A. and Kaliningrad, Russia, is now exported to more than 120 countries. A nice series of achievements but the one in the title is worthy so: Congratulations BMW X5!

As far as the Spartanburg plant is concerned, it’s business as usual, the X6 SAV also took birth there, the next generation of X3 will see birth there and there’s no telling what the future holds.

Throughout its life so far the BMW X5 has earned the following distinctions: “autonis” prize awarded by the trade journal “Auto Motor und Sport” for the most attractive design, Gold Award in the J.D. Power Study on customer satisfaction in North America and “Top Safety Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour both in 2007 and 2008 from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
