BMW Says “Pass” to Aired Commercials for This Year`s 2016 Super Bowl

Following Mercedes-Benz, BMW is the second largest manufacturer to skip aired commercials during this year`s 2016 Super Bowl event, currently taking place in the United States.

We are not sure why BMW took this decision, but according to some recent rumors, the German carmaker couldn’t close the deal concerning a 60-second spot, as representatives of the event were asking a whopping $10 million.

Even if the price involved is quite significant, BMW could have generated more sales after the event, as the 2016 Super Bowl is America`s most important sporting event, with around 100 million viewers to enjoy every single match.

Last year, BMW launched a commercial involving the BMW i3, having Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel as the main stars. The ad had positive reactions in the media and the i3`s high-sales in the US might have been decided as a result of this strategy.

After BMW and Mercedes-Benz, there are also other major manufacturers that skipped this year`s Super Bowl, like Lincoln, which also couldn’t agree on its MKC ad, featuring Matthew McConaughey.

On the other hand, MINI paid good money to air its commercial with the MINI Clubman, the model being called different appellatives by celebrities like Serena Williams, Abby Wambach or Hervey Keitel.

The 2016 Super Bowl has just begun and a lot of carmakers are rushing in to display their latest models in different commercials, also involving superstars around the world. Since this is America`s biggest sporting event, BMW`s main subsidiary MINI has also come up with an innovative ad.

The British based MINI manufacturer, presented a commercial with its latest Clubman edition. The 30 second add is looking to “defy labels” when it is presented during the third quarter of the game.

The 30 second add showcases different personalities defining the car from their own perspective. We get to see Serena Williams stating that “this is the chick car,” or Abby Wambach relating to a “gay car.”

Other appellatives also follow, like “this is a short man`s car”, “slow car”, “this car ain`t hip-hop”, finally ending with Hervey Keitel saying that “this car doesn’t care how you call it.”

Tom Noble, Head of MINI Brand Communications, better explains the MINI Ad:

“Ever since the first Mini was built in 1959, it has been labeled as one thing or another. This campaign acknowledges those labels in a very authentic way while simultaneously showing people Mini is more than that.”
