While the F22 BMW M235i is already a done deal, with BMW showcasing it whenever they have the chance, the M2 is still not a certainty.

Still, while no official word on it has been released, an inside source says that the pure M variant of the 2 Series is underway, and it’s awesome.

The Bavarian car maker has big plans for this particular car, wanting to give people exactly what they are asking for. But what does that actually entail? As we are led to believe, the F22 BMW M2 will be the fastest 4 cylinder engine car in its segment.

So we should expect not just the brilliant 2 liter engine to perform admirably, but also for BMW to make full use of their lightweight materials like CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). The German manufacturer also aims to provide the true BMW experience, or soul, as the source calls it, mostly this meaning that we get a manual gear box to go with the 4 cylinder engine. Still, until an official release is issued, we can only hope.

When BMW announced they will be expanding and diversifying their vehicle lineup, the spy photographers jumped at the possibilities.

And we got some shots of the new vehicles BMW was working on pretty soon.

But now that the BMW i3 is already out there, with the 4 Series close by and the i8 almost completely revealed, we turn our attention to the 2 Series.

In doing so, we can’t help but notice the lack of info on the new Bimmer. Fortunately, only just recently did we get some specs leaked thanks to the South African BMW website, and the goodies are rolling in. We now have new spy shots of the F22 BMW 2 Series.

With a lot of time passing between the first glimpse of the model and these recent spy shots, a lot could have changed, but from we can gather, not much did. The F22 BMW 2 Series was caught wearing some camouflage, although not much of it. The new model is expected to arrive sometime late this year or early 2014.

It seems that South Africa can still dish out some good news for the German car maker, despite the prolonged protests of the working class.

Presented on their BMW website, some interesting specs emerged about the new F22 BMW 2 Series, namely the 220i and 220d.

The BMW 220i will be using the N20 2 liter, 4 cylinder engine as before, capable of dishing out some 184 Hp and 270 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption depends on the transmission, with the manual managing 6.1 liters/100 km, while the automatic one will do 5.7 liters/100 km.

Moving on to the diesel burning 220d, we find it is powered by the N47 unit, capable of delivering the same power of 184 Hp and 380 Nm of torque. As expected, the fuel efficiency is better for this version, with the manual transmission managing 4.5 liters/100 km and the automatic transmission 4.2 liters/100 km.

As a bonus, the new F22 BMW 2 Series will also benefit from CFRP technology developed for the electric BMW i3.
