Mixed feelings are going through our mind regarding this newest of announcements coming from BMW. I should point out it’s coming indirectly, but it’s from a BMW insider.

BMW Australia’s pricing manager, Cristoph Priemel, is saying that the “home office” in Bavaria is rather split on what’s going to power the future generations of the 7 Series.

Whereas most tendencies are towards smaller engines and turbochargers, it’s obvious that the six and four cylinder versions will live on.

Meanwhile, at the lower end of the range, we could see the arrival of the non-glamorous four cylinder. But the place we all hope to be someday might have an issue.

The 6.0 liter twin-turbocharged V12 powerplant usually found in rarefied products like the 760Li might not live through with the new generation.

When the F01 BMW 7 Series does get show the door out, it might actually take the V12 with it, with the 4.4 liter V8 most likely replacing it.

Performance specs are reasonably close, even if the feel can be considerably different among these engines. Owning the 12 cylinder powerplant is more of a status symbol situation than anything else.

That status may be desirable but the considerably larger price between the two has put so many people off that it’s sales are pretty poor with it.

There’s still a fairly good chance that the powerplant won’t be removed and, instead, get a new version. How would a smooth 700 horsepower sound?

It would probably make the new 7 Series simply incredible, as it should be, but there’s also a good chance it will be used as a test bed for a new Rolls Royce Phantom engine.

As one of the most important reasons for loving BMW cars, it’s obvious that the motor is what’s at the core of the equation.

Most fans will say it’s all about the straight six cylinder engines, some will say it’s the V8s and some will even say it’s the airplane engines they used to make a while back.

In fact, just about any engine BMW ever built above 2.0 liters was a treat. Remarkably however, it’s time to celebrate the biggest of the lot.

The mighty V12 engine is something that’s infamously known for a capability to develop a lot of power beautifully and smoothly.

In BMW’s case, the first such engine came 25 years ago, being used in the E32 750iL. In order to celebrate its birth, BMW have created a special edition of that car’s modern equivalent.

A F01 BMW 760Li will be branded “V-12 25 Years Edition” and it will be built in a limited edition of 15. Better yet, it will only be sold to a carefully selected set of customers.

This special edition, believe it or not, is about the interior rather than the engine. There’s a set of new V12 badges, plenty of Individiual options and some nice play with the color palette.

There’s an M Sport pack for the exterior but under the bonnet we find the same 6.0 liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine.

It’s a far cry away from the original 5.0 liter unit as it produces 535 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque, with the latter being available throughout most of the rev range.

The only slightly disappointing thing about the 25 year celebratory model is that to get this V12, apart from factory selection, you should have $159.695 in your account and ready to go.

BMW has unveiled one of its latest prototypes which is based on the BMW Z3 series (production date: 1996 – 2002). The BMW M Division didn’t hesitate to show us the car so they have published some real photos with the Z3 powered by a V12 engine.

No more details regarding the engine’s specs were declared so we cannot say anything because of this. Also, it seems that some rumors said that this BMW Z3 prototype wears under the hood the M73 5.4 liter engine (~320 horsepower).

It sounds interesting when you hear about a V12 engine in a small car, but… a prototype is a prototype and you can understand the situation of this BMW Z3 powered by a V12 engine.

Shortly after the 1988 BMW M1 supercar was put up for sale in mint condition, another classic bimmer turned up online ready to find a new home.

The car in question this time is somewhat less dramatic, less exclusive and yet still loaded with style, presence and driving performance.

We’re talking about a 1991 BMW 850i, a car with basically twice the engine in the aforementioned supercar. There’s another driving highlight here.

Even though we’re talking about an enormous two door coupe with some seriously luxurious toys inside, there’s still some speed and cornering abilities to brag about.

The 5.4 liter V12 engine under its bonnet develops 322 horsepower, all of which are sent to the rear wheels through, get this, a six speed manual gearbox.

It’s painted silver, a color that is a little boring but on the brighter side it never ages. Speaking of time going by, it just flew by this 8 Series.

According to the service records, no more than 11.440 miles have been traveled in this sweet ride. That and the amazing condition is how the owner wants to justify the price tag.

He’s asking for $47.500 (or maybe the website handling it is) which is a little steep. There are a few interesting examples going for half the price.

It is a great car, very advanced for the time and still modern today but at that money it’s not very attractive.

Let’s not forget that even though it has goodies like traction control, climate control, fully electric everything and all that, it’s still a 21 year old car.
