There are often times when we literally forget paying our respects to long-forgotten and iconic models that stand at the very basis of what we have today in the auto industry, and has inspired others to become better and better every day.

Such an iconic built that used to make our delight back in the 1970s is the one-and-only E25 BMW Turbo, built in just two models and destined for the 1972 Olympics. The model was recently highlighted by Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

At that time, such an extraordinary concept was out of its time, the 1972 BMW Turbo coming with an exceptionally-advanced and futuristic design and highlighted by the state-of-the-art aerodynamics and safety features.

A real inspiration for the development of other high-tech models of the 70s, the E25 Turbo came out with lots of gadgetries, like radar system which warned drivers of the tight curbs ahead, futuristic cabin, front and rear section filled with foam to absorb impact, and much more, which were considered at that time out of the ordinary and Sci-Fi.

As aforementioned, it later became a real inspiration for other BMW models, like the already iconic M1, with the design language also inspiring the future 8-Series. Overall, it was an amazing concept built to last, like all BMW models.

Under the hood, the E25 BMW Turbo Concept packed a massive turbocharged with 276 horsepower achieved at a mind-blowing 7,100 rpm. This would also allow a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, at a top speed of 250 km/h.

The Bavarians have been quick to put worries about the finances the F30 BMW 3 Series and quickly went back to the drawing board and started working on engines.

Though we’re not told much in particular about their recent creation, Frankenstein would be proud. It is the 2014 BMW M3’s likely powerplant, the tri-turbo force fed six cylinder engine.

No idea of what and how the system works, but we do know that the new powerplant is getting closer and closer to a production variation as the Bavarians have filed for a patent.

The patent doesn’t include the whole engine, since it’s not that revolutionary, but it does focus around the core of the situation, the new third turbocharger.

Whereas the first two, or rather, last two, are powered by traditional gas pressure, the newly patented one uses electricity to get up to speed.

Sounds like a waste of time and a way to overly complicate engines but BMW has reason in their lunacy. Using the third turbocharger, the one in electric drive form, BMW does away with the final aspects of lag.

I for one think that they were doing fine with their engines providing power as low as 1250-1500 rpm but people still miss the absolute smoothness of a naturally aspirated engine.

Since the patent was filled, it means that beyond this point BMW will no longer make any alterations to the design of the electric turbo.

From here on, the BMW electric turbo will either make it into production, with the F30 BMW M3 being the first car to have it fitted or it may end up as little more than shelf product for BMWs of the future.

The Auto Show of L.A. has brought a lot of attention towards the new BMW models. The Mini E, the potential launch of the new BMW Z4 and especially the unveil of the BMW 7-Series captured the eye of the audience without any doubt. Even so, the statement issued by BMW relating to the N54 Turbo lag can’t be overlooked.

Between June 2006 and March 2008, BMW has updated the software of the 335i/xi and 535i/xi models. They were trying to fix a noise problem, but unfortunately, they’ve created another one. The N54 Turbo lag is caused by the new software and it only appeared on the models which were created in that certain period of time. Even so, BMWs spokesman says that the N54 Turbo lag can’t be noticed in general and only a very attentive person can actually feel a difference.

The solution for getting rid of the N54 Turbo lag will be available for any BMW car built between June 2006 through September 2007. The new software could increase the engine noise, but it will be available for in January of 2009.
