As a major fan of Internet surfing and cars, I watch a certain channel on youtube called drive. Look it up, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Judging by what German magazine Auto Bild is reporting these days, there’s a good chance that somebody at BMW is watching it too. The Bavarians are working on something interesting.

By 2016, BMW will be unveiling a 1 Series sedan. This was an idea I first heard on that particular channel, it made, and still makes a lot of sense.

With the current generation of the 3 Series, the F30, BMW cars have grown in size so much that they’ve caught up to the dimensions of what used to be a 5 Series 20 years ago.

It is quite a bit of time if you think about it and people have evolved by quite a bit since then, but there’s still sufficient room on the market for a small sedan.

Why can’t it be a BMW one?

The trick is that from what we’re getting to know about this interesting new proposal is that BMW isn’t going about doing it in a predictable way.

They will not simply stick a boot on the back of the F20 BMW 1 Series and claim it to be some sort of revolutionary product. The new car will actually be close to the 1 Series GT.

This is because it will have an unusual body shape for BMW, since it will be a notchback sedan. It’s also because it will be a front wheel drive car.

That makes a lot of sense in terms of practicality, even if some purist BMW feel is compromised by the mix.

Since BMW themselves are keeping the actual aesthetics of the Megacity (or i10) under total secrecy we’ll have to see ourselves content with what those talented in the area can envision.

This artist impression featured here keeps true to the basic idea that this car will be somewhere between the 1 Series and the ActiveE Concept but adds a bit of a new twist.

Whereas everybody thinks of the Megacity as a small and discrete car, this rendering sees it as a miniature BMW X6. I can’t help but say it’s an interesting take on the Megacity but i fear it may see the same fate the Dodge Caliber did.

Getting back to the BMW Megacity it seems that it sparked a interest of the Bavarians for city cars as they plan on releasing a a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler concept soon.

The BMW i10 will feature all the latest technologies and will be very light and aerodynamic and while the drivetrain hasn’t been completely “exposed” yet most experts believe it will be closely related to that of the Concept ActiveE, which was launched at the Detroit Motor Show of this year.

Seeing how the BMW X6 has had a tremendous success, the Bavarians are seriously considering the creation of a smaller brother for it.

Since it’s launch back in 2008 the BMW X6 has sold over 80.000 units so it would only make sense to make a smaller, more affordable version of it.

The BMW X6 has been even more controversial then all of the styling decisions made by Chris Bangle a few years ago as almost nobody seemed to understand the concept  behind the car. Nevertheless the sales figure speak for themselves and they make up the best proof behind the demand for sporty off-roaders.

While the X4 hasn’t gotten the green light yet, actually, it doesn’t even have this name yet. What it could be is a car based on the X3 platform, that would draw stylistic inspiration from the X6, obviously, and from the X Coupe Concept presented in 2001.

Since BMW has been responsible for creating niche products such as the 5 Series GranTurismo or the BMW X1 the X4 could well be soon coming to a dealership near you. How soon? Well possibly around the same time the BMW Gran Coupe hits the market in 2012.
