As one of the most appreciated auto shows of the year, the NAIAS Auto Show will be missing two of the most important carmakers in the auto industry next year, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The latter company recently announced the decision during an official statement.

This is what BMW representatives stated about bailing on the North American International Auto Show next year:

“[The] BMW Group has decided to withdraw from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This decision was made as BMW is constantly examining our presence at trade-shows and other engagements, while, at the same time, also exploring alternative platforms and formats.”

The Bavarian representatives have also said that their job is to “communicate our ideas and plans regarding future mobility in the best way and achieve the greatest possible visibility for our products, technologies and innovations.”

BMW has had a relatively-low presence at this year`s auto event, as the carmaker was also developing new technologies and new concept cars. It is busy testing out future models, while also launching new ones, like the updated i8 coupe or the gorgeous X2 crossover.

Usually taking place between January 13th – January 28th, the NAIAS might be moved further on to October. At least this is what officials have in mind, now with the withdrawing of the two major carmakers in the auto industry.

This way, carmakers would have sufficient time to test out, prepare and announce their latest concepts or prototypes. This could also help to reduce costs. Another advantage is that the show would be held just right after the Frankfurt and Paris Motor Show, taking place in September.

In case the vote on the move could favour NAIAS, this wouldn’t take place until 2020, at least this is what recent reports from Automotive News state. We will definitely know more details next month, when officials will meet to discuss the situation. Stay tuned!

Recent reports and spy photos confirmed that the Bavarian carmaker is getting ready to introduce the all-new X3 on the market next year.

However, other statements and spied pictures have also shown that a hardcore X3 M is also on the way, this one being slotted to arrive as a MY2019.

From Autoevolution magazine, rumors have it that the 2019 BMW X3 M is going to be extremely powerful thanks to a new engine, in the shape of the S58, which is the upgraded version of the S55, found on the present BMW M3 and M4.

In the aforementioned models, the S55 develops 317 kW and 550 Nm of torque, so we might also expect around 340 kW on the future X3 M.

Also, what seems to be good news is the new system implemented on the engine. This means that the engine will be using a water-to-air intercooler, found in the intake plenum, which would automatically increase the car`s performance by reducing the intake temperatures.

Besides the all-new 2019 BMW X3 M, the company is also planning the introduction of revamped models of the M40d and M40i, adding as well an updated xDrive30e models, set to rival those from the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC 63, Audi SQ5 or the new Jaguar F-Pace S.

Along with the release of the 2017 MINI Countryman lineup at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, last September, the British based manufacturer has promised that besides the first hybrid (MINI Countryman Hybrid), it would also spawn its first hybrid, starting this year.

And if previous reports stated that the production of MINI`s first EV would start in the UK at the carmaker`s main facility, fresh news state that BMW is actually considering building the model in the Netherlands.

The German carmaker has not officially confirmed the news, but according to a report from the German Automobil Production magazine and some inside sources, it turns out that BMW is indeed planning the production of the all-electric MINI model outside the UK.

The reason is the terms and conditions imposed by the Brexit concerning the manufacturing of new electric vehicles, which are quite restrictive at the moment. Hopefully, the situation would become much clearer at the end of March.

Concerning the hint of the new facility instead of building the MINI EV in the UK, a company representative has declared that “Companies are expecting planning certainty, which will not happen in the spring. A decision has not yet fallen and depends on many factors.”

In order to carry out its plans, BMW will have to close a new deal with Nedcar, which is also helping MINI to build the Convertible, Countryman, MINI Hatchback, as well as BMW`s all-new X1 SUV. More details about the making of the MINI`s first EV will be known at the beginning of May.

It is well-known that BMW is planning to change most of its X lineup by the end of the decade, by introducing a new X3, X4 and X5 replacements, with a reportedly X2 Convertible joining the fleet by 2020, as well.

Speaking about the BMW X2 Convertible, the model will stand on the same platform as the upcoming BMW X2 SUV, and will be aimed at the Range Rover`s Evoque Convertible.

Even if the carmaker has not officially confirmed the news, a BMW insider talked to motoring.com.au and stated that the company is reportedly planning the introduction a soft-top version of the BMW X2.

Even if it sounds strange, there are several indications that the making of an X2 Convertible is possible, and that just by taking a look at the first spy photos with the upcoming BMW X2.

Even if it was covered in full camouflage by the time the test mule was caught on shots, we could still depict the styling it will come with.

First, it will mainly borrow the general lines of the Concept X2 revealed a couple of months ago at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Second, the model will be based on the same platform as the X1, which will make it wider and riding lower, adding a more appealing and aggressive design. It will also come with a revised grille, new front and rear bumpers, BMW logo in the D-pillar, lower roofline and so on, all favoring a soft-topped configuration.

In the engine department, the BMW X2 convertible might be offered with just a wide range of petrol burners alone. So far, the details list is rather limited, but we should be able to find out more in the upcoming period!

The never-ending battle between Tesla and BMW for the electric and plug-in hybrid segments have led to outstanding innovations in the auto industry, each carmaker trying to launch exquisite and more evolutionary vehicles.

In this regard, Tesla is now taking the lead in the EV market with its latest product, the Tesla Model 3, while BMW is trying to recover with its future generation of “i” models, preparing a future BMW i5, slotted between the i3 and i8. But the i5 is not the only full electric vehicle from the German carmaker.

According to a recent report from Auto Express, BMW is presuming working on a G20 version from its 3-Series, set to be unveiled in 2018 as a full electric vehicle, and underpinning the company`s latest CLAR platform, also seen on the 5-, 6- or 7-Series.

In case that happens, we might be dealing here with the first EV model from the mid-size segment, the model coming with lightweight materials, consisting of aluminum and carbon fiber. The lightweight platform will lead to improve range.

Supposing weighing just 1,425 kg, the future G20 3-Series would come with improved performance. Also, the battery pack would also come with a range of an impressive 480 km, with the battery pack ranging up to 90 kWh.

According to the same report, the EV variant of the 3-Series might arrive around 2020, after the entire 3-Series would have been already launched.

It usually takes 5 to 8 years until an old model would be replaced by a new-generation, but in the case of the BMW X5, things are moving quite faster, as the Bavarian carmaker is reportedly planning to introduce the new SUV in early 2017.

The BMW X5 in its third generation was introduced around three years ago, but Marc Werner, BMW Group Australia managing director hinted at the idea that a new version might already be under serious tests and development.

Once it will emerge on the market, the all-new BMW X5 will ride on the company`s new CLAR platform, also found on the 206 BMW 7-Series. Werner also let us believe that the new X5 will have a short lifecycle, as it will be used as a base for the upcoming BMW X7. So far, the specs are hidden, but we surely expect fresh news in the upcoming period.

And while he was at it, when asked about the upcoming X7, Werner avoided to provide any further details about the biggest SUV BMW will ever built, but according to a new report, the model would be 1.6 feet longer than the present X5, also weighing around 4,188 pounds in its top configuration.

Still on the X7, the SUV is also expected to come with a wide range of powertrains, like a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, a fresh new V8 and likely a topper 6.0-liter V12, fitted on the highest-end version. As expected, BMW X7 will also spawn a plug-in hybrid with a total of 31 mile range.

Following the recent unveiling of the BMW Vision Next 100 Concept, BMW seems to be planning the all-new 7-Series Centennial Edition.

Edmunds has also released a report according to which the model would be produced in a limited edition and would be aimed for major worldwide markets, including the United States, Europe and Asia.

In terms of styling, the BMW 7-Series Centennial Edition will come with an evolutionary design highlighted by the latest technology in terms of lighting, while the cabin will tweak premium leather, high-end gizmos, the 100th anniversary badging and much more. Unfortunately, the details list is rather scarce at the moment.

As for the engine department, we have reasons to believe that the all-new 7-Series Centennial Edition might pack the same engine options in the US as the current 7-Series.

Thus, we might see the 3.0-liter TwinPower flat-six also seen on the entry-level 740i, with 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, or the higher 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 from the 750i, developing 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.

Another motoring option would be the massive 6.6-liter M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12, the same one found on the recently unveiled 7-Series M760Li M Performance model. This one produces 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. We should be able to find more in the upcoming period.

A recent report issued via BMW Blog states that the 2016 BMW 7-Series might come with two V12 engines in the following years.

If you take a look at the luxury sedan`s engine lineup, we see two petrol engines, like the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo flat-six, with 326 horsepower, equipping the 740i and 740 Li, as well as a higher 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 mill, with 450 horsepower, powering the 750i xDrive and 750 Li xDrive versions.

Apart these two powerful engines, the carmaker is also reported to fit the 2016 7-Series with a huge 6.6-liter V12 engine, taken from Rolls-Royce, with two power configurations: 600 horsepower in the future 760i and 760 Li and 600-plus-horsepower in the upcoming M760i, the latter one being regarded as the top of the line version from the entire 7-Series class.

The same report also mentions that both engines would come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. As expected, we might also see an xDrive version, along with a rear-wheel drive one. We should expect full details about the engines somewhere next year, when the carmaker would make the official announcements on that matter.

The German based carmaker is planning to extend the “i” range by adding an i5 to the already existing all-electric i3, the model reportedly coming as a crossover, and not as a sedan or a longer i3, as previously reported.

The new report comes from Auto Express auto magazine, stating that the future BMW i5 is more likely to come as a crossover, which would prove more successful in the crossover segment.

We might be also looking here at a keen competition, especially since the upcoming i5 crossover would have to compete against other high-end models from the segment, such as the Audi Q6 e-tron or the newly arrived Tesla Model X, which basically has no competitor at the moment.

The same report also states that the BMW i5 crossover might come with a lightweight carbon fiber body style, along with an all-electric powertrain, which would come with a range mile of around 321 km. As expected, the autonomous driving technology would be also implemented.

As a reminder, the BMW i3 all-electric packs a rear-engine and a rear-wheel drive system.We are talking about an electric motor, which outputs a great 250 Nm of torque, hooked to a single-speed transmission, while the 650cc two-cylinder petrol range extender, provides an additional of 34 horsepower.

According to Inautonews via Autocar, the 2017 BMW 5-Series is reported to be unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the model coming as the direct competitive of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Just as the newly unveiled 2016 BMW 7-Series, the new 5-Series will boast with the latest technology in terms of driving dynamics, along with a more powerful powertrain lineup under the hood.

Speaking about the powertrain, the 5-Series is presently undergoing final tests, the carmaker testing out the reliability of its engines.

Amongst the three- and four-cylinder engine lineup, the carmaker is also planning the introduction of a plug-in hybrid petrol-electric hybrid, with an electric range of 20 miles.

The all-new 2017 BMW 5-Series will underpin the new 48-volt electrical architecture, coming with the most advanced safety features, like hands-free driving, anti-collision system, or fully autonomous braking.

More than that, BMW will also equip the upcoming 5-Series with the latest iDrive system, also seen on the new 7-Series.

The details list is rather scarce right now, but we should be able to find out more next year, prior to the car`s official unveiling at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
