The BMW German manufacturer is on a constant development, as it is planning to expand the “i” family, alongside the i3 electric car and the i8 plug-in hybrid.

First of all, the company wants to start expansion on the i3 electric car, which might be coming with a new body, like a stretched wheelbase model, for the Chinese market probably.

Official reports state that these new models will be green lit and will enter the market in less than three years.

More than that, an MPV style van with features from the 2 Series Active Tourer or a sportier i3 Coupe, are already attracting the company`s attention.

Thus, the BMW is considering in investing a lot of money in the hybrid i8 sports car, which will hit the showrooms somewhere in June, with a full agenda for the following years as well.

Increasing production in the US means that the i3 and the i8 will be rolled out, with other models to get their priority.

BMW has finally launched the price tags for the i3 electric in Australia, with the vehicle coming from 63,900 AUD.

The BMW i3 can be now purchased at the starting price of 63,900 AUD after the model will be launched on the market in November this year.

Along with the i3, BMW will also get the hot i8 plug-in hybrid in Australia, with prices yet not to be announced, but what is certain, the Australians will have to wait for another six months to see it on the market.

To be a reminder, the BMW i3 was first introduced to the public in 2013, with the car being considered the company`s “small green” vehicle.

The BMW i3 is now available for order in Europe as well as in the US, since the model is wanted for its high performances.

Talking about performances, the i3 comes with an electric power, developing 170 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque.

All the power of the electric power is transmitted to a single-speed transmission sending it to the rear wheels. The electric motor can be backed by a 650cc two-cylinder petrol engine.

Rumors stated that due to the first model which managed to surpass expectations of selling more than 11,000 units worldwide since November, the BMW automaker is said to expand the range of the i-branded electric range.

But the production chief at BMW, Harald Krueger, said that the company won`t be adding a third model to the i-branded range until higher demands will be on the roll.

The i-series has been trademarked by the i9 version, but Krueger also stated that it has no plans to add it to the i3 and i8 plug-in hybrid cars, going on sale this spring.

There are no specific figures given by the production chief, for the current production rate of the i3, which is being built in Leipzig, Germany.

BMW is heavily using lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic in its i-range. The German car manufacturer has also built a US factory in collaboration with SGL Carbon to its cars with enough fiber carbon materials.

In China, the biggest car market in the world, there are no fresh news concerning the launch of the i-series there, due to the poor infrastructure for that matter.
