Continuing a long spanning tradtion, BMW entered a M3 GT2 Art Car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in their comeback to the fabled motor sport event.

Unfortunately despite a good show at the endurance race at Nurburgring and an amazing paintjob done by Jeff Koons this isn’t enough to win at the crucible of endurance racing.

The BMW M3 GT2 Art Car was wearing the #72 race number and had a complete rough going in the renown French race with a series of three massive problems within the first 6 hours of the race.

The third one of those problems cropped up just entering the sixth hour and saw the end for the BMW Art Car. The number 72 racer, at that moment being driven by Andy Priaulx pulled off the course onto the grass and began swerving back and forth as though he was out of fuel.

The #72 Art Car car was out. Mind you, while BMW fans are slightly disappointed it’s not all bad, as while troubled as well, the rest of the team managed to get one car to finish and quite well, it finished 5th in GT2 class being dominated by Porsche and Ferrari and 19th overall. This result is quite pleasing since this is a comeback and even so it was made even more difficult by necessities to change pretty much most of the rear underpinnings in preparation for the race at Le Mans.

The Art Car did however play a bit of a role within the overall result, while limping back to the pits it almost took “Mr. Le Mans” Tom Kristensen out after a bit of an issue when trying to pass Jeff Koons’ creation.
