BMW offers quite a lot of variations of the F01 7 Series. There are varying length choices for the body, various engines, various trim levels and even some Alpina prepped options.

Beyond that, there’s the whole range of options you can tick on or off and the considerable amount of color choices available to make sure it’s yours and yours alone.

You might be as, if not more familiar with the 7 Series range than us here ath BMWCoop, but how are you on knowing the limousine outside the BMW production?

Have you ever heard of a company called Leitner? They’re the new partners BMW got with to create something related to the 7 Series.

Unfortunately, it’s not really the sort of thing we’d appreciate instantly since it’s not a car. The two have actually made a new ski lift.

It can waft and it can provide you with a luxurious feeling but driving it is a bit tricky and the luggage capacity isn’t that impressive.

There is enough room for plenty of skis, but beyond that you’re going to struggle to have anything else. Not even as much fun to drive as a Mercedes or as practical as an old Jaguar.

Drivers of the actual 7 Series will find these ski lifts quite familiar since the seats are quite similar and they’re also covered in fabulous Merino leather.

Remarkably, iDrive is also pleasant and all the trimmings are of the same class as the BMW. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite make enough of these.

They’re only found in the Hochzillertal resort in Austria’s Zillertal Valley.

Not that we’re petty or anything but you’d think the folks who are rich enough to own a BMW 7 Series have got things going their own way without the Bavarians actually encouraging them.

Unfortunately for our spite, that’s exactly what’s happening. BMW is cooking up two new options for the folks who will be driving the best handling limousine out there.

It’s not little stuff either, it’s two new engines, one of which comes with some extra performance aiding tricks.

We can take some comfort in the fact that the first of these engines is actually aimed at making the F01 BMW 7 Series less expensive, more fuel efficient and generally more affordable.

That’s what BMW are calling the 728i. The name is a bit of a giveaway as it tells us that it will share the N20 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo four pot of the 328i.

In order to give it some more punch or more fuel economy depending on the conditions, BMW will use a hybrid system as well.

The other option is a much more exciting vehicle, it’s the M750i. Therefore it will be a sportier version of the mid-level V8 powered 7 Series.

You just know that the 4.4 liter TwinTurbo powerplant will be tweaked to produce some 450 or so horsepower and that the chassis will also receive some tweaks in order to make best use of that grunt.

It must be nice to have the opportunity to buy something like this, I mean really nice. Rumor has it that these choices will be available as early as next year.

Moscow’s Motor Show has closed. It wasn’t that long ago and in some parts, analysts are still weighing its newly gained importance on the global motoring scene.

The upcoming status of the former Soviet Union leader attracts a lot of interest from car makers, particularly those in the luxury segment.

For BMW the choice was obvious, they had to portray the recently facelifted F01 7 Series in Russia in a very special way.

And so they did. Except in going to Russia with the 7 Series, the Bavarians didn’t spin the limousine around Moscow.

The filming actually took place in St. Peteresburg, a city that’s quite a bit more pleasant as a background for some luxury shooting.

As you’d expect, the presentation is almost dry, featuring no drifts, no explosions and no dinosaurs. Still, the highlights of the 7 Series are made clear.

After all, driving dynamics, efficiency, luxury feel and lots of toys is what the key demographic for this car really wants.

I’m not trying to disagree with BMW’s presentation but I reckon you can find out more about the F01 BMW 7 Series newest facelift here.

Provided you’re impressed enough, you can check up on the pricing here and you should know that just about any self respecting dealer has access to a 7 Series for you to test.

It may be praised for the toys, the back seat comfort, the quietness, but, trust me on this, you’ll want to take it for a drive at least once a week.

Not many cars weighing in this much could brag about the same sort of attraction.

As one of the most important reasons for loving BMW cars, it’s obvious that the motor is what’s at the core of the equation.

Most fans will say it’s all about the straight six cylinder engines, some will say it’s the V8s and some will even say it’s the airplane engines they used to make a while back.

In fact, just about any engine BMW ever built above 2.0 liters was a treat. Remarkably however, it’s time to celebrate the biggest of the lot.

The mighty V12 engine is something that’s infamously known for a capability to develop a lot of power beautifully and smoothly.

In BMW’s case, the first such engine came 25 years ago, being used in the E32 750iL. In order to celebrate its birth, BMW have created a special edition of that car’s modern equivalent.

A F01 BMW 760Li will be branded “V-12 25 Years Edition” and it will be built in a limited edition of 15. Better yet, it will only be sold to a carefully selected set of customers.

This special edition, believe it or not, is about the interior rather than the engine. There’s a set of new V12 badges, plenty of Individiual options and some nice play with the color palette.

There’s an M Sport pack for the exterior but under the bonnet we find the same 6.0 liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine.

It’s a far cry away from the original 5.0 liter unit as it produces 535 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque, with the latter being available throughout most of the rev range.

The only slightly disappointing thing about the 25 year celebratory model is that to get this V12, apart from factory selection, you should have $159.695 in your account and ready to go.

A full month after unveiling the facelift of the F01 BMW 7 Series, the Bavarians re-open the subject by talking about how much such a model is going to cost.

I’m clearly not very involved in the way the Germans value their products but to my mind that seems like quite a long time to print out a price tag.

Happily though, the new pricing announcement comes with a rather hefty gallery of images containing the new top end luxury sedan.

If you’re wondering what will it take to get yourself the privilege of sitting behind the wheel of one of Bavaria’s most upmarket products you’ll almost certainly not afford it.

Just in case you might, the starting price is $74.195 (destination and handling included). For that you’ll get the two wheel drive, short wheel base V8-powered option.

It might be the entry level version but don’t think somebody with a tarted up 5 Series can hold a candle to it.

If you really want to shut up anybody in the corporate car park you will however opt for a different kind of car. That’ll be the top of the line 760Li.

That’s the V12 powered model that’s only available in long wheelbase form and comes with a price tag of just over 140.000 USD.

It’s a little steep but it offers the smoothest ever 544 horsepower you’ll ever get to see in the quietest ever fashion imaginable.

There are some models in between, including a more powerful V8 and some options with all wheel drive but until the M770i xDrive comes into view, the story is pretty much the same as the original car.

We do our best to keep tabs on BMW’s progress and we cover just about everything they do. By the looks of things, so does specialist tuner Alpina.

Having given the F01 BMW 7 Series facelift a proper going over they’ve decided it’s worthy of their approval. That’s why they updated their B7.

The Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo was always a great car, the F01 BMW 7 Series is a great car, the new facelift is well thought out, can you imagine the result?

It retains the same basic structure, the same suspension underpinnings, the same interior and the same prestigious presence.

Alpina did fit the new tweaks of the BMW 7 Series fancy headlights and while they did stick with the 4.4 liter TwinPower turbocharged V8 engine it’s a little different now.

The final output was raised by some 40 horsepower and 22 lb-ft of torque bringing the grand total to 540 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque.

That’s reasonably impressive since while it’s a few ponies short of the 6.0 liter twin-turbo V12 BMW themselves fit in the 760 Li.

With so much power available it’s no wonder that the facelifted Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo can go from 0 to 62 in just 4.3 seconds and that it can hit a top speed of 194 mph.

More importantly, there’s a lot of extra equipment that’s going to be fitted as standard now. The list includes auto start-stop, BMW’s Active protection system and the ceramic coated secondary controls.

All of these make for nice changes being the sort of “going the extra mile” attention to detail that makes Alpina stand out as a tuner.

It seems like the F01 BMW 7 Series facelift is more of an ongoing piece of kit than we’d imagine. The US market version still has one extra step in evolution to consider.

According to Car and Driver, the Bavarians are going to introduce a diesel version of the flagship limo to the US market.

That’s a serious commitment, even for the sort of company that BMW is. It’s actually so tricky that the original plan to bring BMW diesel back to the US couldn’t happen before.

Apparently, it was the M550d that was to bring diesel back to the US but since that model isn’t expected to have too long a life in production, thus making it not worth the emissions-compliance costs.

Since the BMW 7 Series, be it the F01 version or whatever revised version may be sitting in the future, will have a considerably longer life, that problem is eliminated.

Now that we know they’re coming here’s the short list. All diesel engines that are going into the 7 Series are 3.0 liter straight six-cylinder units, that have been first found in the 735d and the 740d in Europe.

There’s no news on the 750d, the one that would be powered by the new tri-turbocharged six cylinder so the dawn of 400 horsepower in an oil burner is yet to be achieved.

After all, it’s not like its smaller brothers are down on power. Let’s not forget that the 740d has 269 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque.

The 750d, on the other hand, has 312 horses and an even meatier and 465 lb-ft of twist available on tap.

The low-rev nature of that power is what gives the F01 BMW 7 Series even more motorway wafting appeal.

With all of this product line expansion BMW is going through, it’s easy to get lost in the entirety of new models and ideas that turn up.

Thankfully though, the top of the line model remains the same. You can always trust the BMW 7 Series to remain a constant beacon of luxury and driving pleasure.

Even when BMW facelift it, it doesn’t seem to change that much. The F01’s newest look has just been announced, alongside some technical upgrades as well.

Most of the changes focus on the front end where there’s a redesigned bumper, new fog lamps and new headlights. Round at the back we find some minor changes in the lights as well and there’s that little bit more chrome involved..

Considering we’ve had enough of interior changes, BMW have given the 7 Series facelift a few tweaks to the interior that are equally minor.

You can now get the multiple mode instrument cluster we recently saw on the F10 5 Series and the infotainment system gets some tasty new options.

Rear passengers get two 9.2 inch screens and there’s an optional Bang & Olufsen audio system which can pump out a whopping 1200 watts of tunes.

That’s about all that’s different in an obvious form. Underneath however all models of the F01 BMW 7 Series get air suspension with self leveling rear. Could it be the same astonishing setup from the Rolls Royce Ghost?

More important then all these changes is the fuel economy bit. Whereas the fun V8 and V12 engines remain basically unchanged (the V8 has some extra power), the diesel and hybrid have different stories.

The 750d was introduced to the lineup and it’s powered by the 3.0 liter tri-turbo diesel with 381 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque.

That engine, complete with xDrive four wheel drive, is claimed to manage 36.8 mpg on the US cycle. It’ll also hit 62 in 4.9 seconds and happily cruise at 155 mph.

With the ActiveHybrid BMW 7 Series we find the only trace of winding back on behalf of the Bavarians. They’ve replaced the V8 part with the 3.0 liter straight six twin-turbo.

That gives the hybrid F01 354 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque to play with. It’s marginally slower than the V8 unit in getting to 62 but is considerably more efficient and BMW promises 34.6 mpg US.

Come June 1st, 2012, BMW’s head of Design position, will be occupied by a new name. Well, the name isn’t completely new, but you get the point.

The new top dog at BMW Design is called Karim Habib and he should sound familiar since two of his designs are already in the graces of the Bavarian company fans out there.

He’s the man behind the 2007 BMW CS Concept and, more importantly, the F01 generation of the 7 Series, probably one of the finest looking ones around.

His progression through the ranks seems to be going quite well as he’s been in charge of Exterior Design within BMW Automobiles since March of 2011.

Karim Habib is 42 and he’s a Canadian of Lebanese origins. He was actually born in the Arabic country rather than just having parents from the place.

That’s all very nice but the man’s career with BMW is a little more interesting than that. He’s been working for the company since 1998, with just a period of two years in between.

That gap in his work is when he went to Stuttgart to work for BMW’s rivals at Mercedes. He found his way back and is probably pretty happy with his new promotion.

Karim will now be all in charge of the design works at BMW with the only person for him to report to being Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

Just about everybody is worried when there’s word of a change nearing the design department of BMW. I don’t think this is the case, his work so far seems to be easy to identify with the company.

The F01 BMW 7 Series is pretty much the top of the line Bimmer, a true symbol of luxury, image and, of course, drivability.

Everything is fine, smooth and dandy but the trouble is that the BMW limo is actually getting a little old now, bring along the facelift then.

It’s the facelift that was just spotted going for a brisk lap around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife test track wearing a bit of camouflage.

As usual with these things, the camouflage on the F01 BMW 7 Series isn’t really dramatic. We know what the car will look like and we can take a pretty good guess about what will change.

There are minimal changes going on with the front and rear light assemblies and most of the front bumper is being revised as well.

With the new look of the car we expect a few minor changes to occur with the interior, the infotainment system and some of the trim available.

The existing engines and gearbox will receive some mild updates but there’s one major change that might happen in this department.

There’s a very interesting rumor going round about how the next gen F01 BMW 7 Series will receive the tri-turbo 3.0 liter six cylinder diesel engine and four wheel drive.

Luxury car buyers love their four wheel drive option but the mountain of torque and performance of that “small” engine is what should make for an appealing purchase.

An official unveiling of the facelifted version of the F01 BMW 7 series should take place later this year but we don’t think the time it can set round the Ring will be included in the press release.
