BMW is revitalizing part of its model lineup by introducing new updates and engines starting this July. The changes involve the 1-Series model as well as some variants from the 5- and the 7-Series, along with the newly-launched i8 Roadster. Also, SUVs from the X range will receive new engine updates.

Starting with the BMW 1-Series, the carmaker has set up a special car titled the “Metropolitan Edition”, which adds up new features “specifically designed to enhance comfort and driving pleasure in urban traffic.”

These new highlights refer to “instrument cluster with extended features”, GPS navigation, rear-view camera, Comfort Access pack, Park Distance and Speed Limited Info.

Next is the 5-Series in both Sedan and Touring disguises, set to arrive with the fabulous Frozen Dark Silver Metallic paintjob, while the top of the line M5 is now dressed with the new Frozen Marina Bay Blue Metallic. On the other hand, the 7-Series has been optimized with a wide choice of colours, along with Merion leather with special trims and high-end roof liner inside.

Moving up to the new i8 Roadster, the hot model is now available with new aerodynamic styling package, with main highlights comprising updated front splitter and rear spoiler. As for the I Performance models – ranging from the 225xe iPerformance to the i8 – these come equipped with the latest technologies onboard.

The new engine updates comprising both petrol and plug-in hybrid forms have been equipped with a particulate filter to comply the new Euro 6d-TEMP regulations.

The power of the engines have also been enhanced. For instance, the BMW X3 M40d is now producing no less than 320 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque, all squeezed from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, enabling a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Also, in August, BMW will also introduce the X4 xDrive30d with a 3.0-liter diesel with 261 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque; paired to a high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive configuration, the model can jump to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

The transmissions have also been modified. For instance, there is the new eight-speed automatic, available from August on models from the 1-Series (12oi, M140i) or the 3-, 4- and the 5-Series (520d Sedan, 520d Touring).

The 2016 BMW 3-Series is out for the taking, the model being officially unveiled in Achenkirch, Austria, at a special event held specifically for the 3-Series facelift, with a massive photo gallery also to be unveiled, unfortunately portraying only the sedan 340i version.

The 2016 BMW 3-Series seen in the photos is wearing the one-off Mediterranean Blue exterior finish, while inside the model is featuring the high-end Dakota Oyster leather upholstery.

But perhaps the most significant changes will be carried out under the hood, where the new 2016 3-Series is announced to come with a wide array of engines.

In Europe, the 2016 BMW 3-Series will come available with four petrol burners and seven diesels, with power between 116 horsepower and 326 horsepower.

The petrol engines fitted under the 3-Series refer to the new 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol with 134 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque in the 318i, while the 320i will receive the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, with 181 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque.The top of the line 340i version will also receive the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo petrol, developing 322 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, hooked to the new 8-speed Steptronic gearbox.

On the diesel`s department, the 316d will come with 113 horsepower, the 335d will output 309 horsepower, while the 330e plug-in hybrid will offer 249 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque, and a 35 km full-electric range mile. Enjoy the photo gallery with the 2016 BMW 3-Series!

Due to rather stringent emissions regulations and partly to lack of interest from the US audience, diesels aren’t making it into small cars over there.

Even for BMW, the engine company, the one that makes some of the most incredible oil burners out there, the ability to sell them in the US is limited.

Currently, there’s the X5 diesel option as the only one out there since the E90 335i is no longer available as a new purchase.

The future does hold a few good news for fuel efficiency aficionados as BMW is very interested in bringing more diesel powered vehicles to the US.

An image from a presentation inside the company leaked online and that’s how we’ve been able to find out that the Bavarians are preparing two engines for sale with six of their models.

The twin-turbocharged six cylinder N57 engine will live on, with just about all models having it as an option. The smaller sized vehicles will also get the N47’s variations to have fun with.

That means that your fuel will be burned through a 2.0 liter force fed four cylinder engine that can develop up to around 250 horsepower.

Meanwhile, the 3.0 liter option develops around 300 horsepower and considerably more torque alongside more refined delivery.

Whereas the US still won’t get the M Performance high end diesels, they are still getting a product which is rated by many reviewers as the best of its breed.

It will be available in the F30 3 Series, the F31 3 Series Touring, the F10 5 Series, the E70 X5 and the F01 7 Series.

With the 2.0 liter option, we expect to see the 3 Series, 5 Series and X3 crossover as they can still move quite swiftly with such an engine.

Not that we’re petty or anything but you’d think the folks who are rich enough to own a BMW 7 Series have got things going their own way without the Bavarians actually encouraging them.

Unfortunately for our spite, that’s exactly what’s happening. BMW is cooking up two new options for the folks who will be driving the best handling limousine out there.

It’s not little stuff either, it’s two new engines, one of which comes with some extra performance aiding tricks.

We can take some comfort in the fact that the first of these engines is actually aimed at making the F01 BMW 7 Series less expensive, more fuel efficient and generally more affordable.

That’s what BMW are calling the 728i. The name is a bit of a giveaway as it tells us that it will share the N20 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo four pot of the 328i.

In order to give it some more punch or more fuel economy depending on the conditions, BMW will use a hybrid system as well.

The other option is a much more exciting vehicle, it’s the M750i. Therefore it will be a sportier version of the mid-level V8 powered 7 Series.

You just know that the 4.4 liter TwinTurbo powerplant will be tweaked to produce some 450 or so horsepower and that the chassis will also receive some tweaks in order to make best use of that grunt.

It must be nice to have the opportunity to buy something like this, I mean really nice. Rumor has it that these choices will be available as early as next year.

With the 2012 season of Formula 1 being one of the most exciting ever, there’s more and more attention turning to the king of motorsports.

Volkswagen and BMW have both been rumored to return to F1. VW repeatedly denied any plans to do so and it is only know that the Bavarians are going the same route.

Jens Marquardt, current motorsport division director for BMW denied any plans to return to Formula 1, not only for next season but over the mid-term as well.

Obviously, nobody can say anything for sure on the long term but the general idea is that we’re not going to see a BMW roundel on a Formula 1 single seater very soon.

Motorsport Aktuell is a Swiss magazine that interviewed Jens Marquardt and he confirmed that there’s no plan as the rumors have been speaking of.

The July 2009 decision on F1 for BMW will still be in place. That’s when the company decided to pull out of the sport the last time.

BMW have been involved in F1 back in the 50s and 60s as a team. Since then they’ve also been involved in the sport in more modern times but only as engine suppliers.

Unfortunately, the teams they partnered up with never really stood up to the performance of the engines. It’s quite common for BMW to have the greatest powerplant on the grid.

That may be the case but it hasn’t helped results and, ultimately, poor chassis performance was what led to them backing out of the sport altogether.

America’s lack of interest in the fuel saving solution that is the diesel engine has been long discussed and over-debated for several years now.

There have been plenty of attempts, at the forefront of which BMW have been of major importance, to showcase the capabilities and performance diesel is capable.

Unfortunately, they’ve all pretty much failed. It may be for a number of reasons but as gas prices keep going up, diesels are making a comeback.

Since the US is finally finding out what rising fuel costs are, they’re taking a liking to diesels in increasing numbers.

While we’re on the subject, it’s not exactly a secret that BMW, makers of some of the greatest engines out there, also make the finest diesels available.

Two of their cherries are headed stateside now. It’s the 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine and the more interesting 3.0 liter straight six unit.

The first one will likely develop around 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque whereas the bigger engine will provide around 255 horsepower and some 413 lb-ft of torque.

Figures may be altered slightly by the time they hit the road in America as the emissions legislation there plays on different fields to the ones BMW is used to.

Even so, the economy minded motorist is in for a treat, even if he lives in the United States. Their highway system should make for quite a difference when it comes to settling into the cruise.

The new engines should be available in the 3 series, 5 series and X5/X6 models to begin with and there’s a chance at expanding its options later on.

The Bavarians are seriously capable when it comes to engine building. We say it and a lot of people who aren’t necessarily fans also say it.

Today we also got some confirmation from a panel of journalists that actually know what they’re doing. The guys behind the Car of the Year awards may have no clue but the guys behind the Engine of the Year sure do.

The grand prize winner was Ford’s 1.0 liter EcoBoost turbocharged three cylinder which took three categories.

Best performance engine went to Ferrari for the 4.5 liter V8 engine in the 458 and there were a few exceptions in the smaller categories.

Otherwise, BMW have once again dominated the whole affair. They got the 1.4 liter to 1.8 liter engine for the engine they put in the Mini.

Then BMW won the 1.8 liter to 2 liter category for the N20 engine they put in the Z4, the X1 and a host of other models.

The creme-de-la-creme was the 2.5 liter to 3 liter category where BMW’s 3.0 liter straight six TwinPower turbo from the 1 Series M Coupe won.

However, In the same category BMW also got second, third and fourth place for the rest of their 3.0 liter engines regardless of the fuel they use.

Here’s another impressive achievement. BMW also won the 3.0 liter to 4.0 liter category with the engine in the M3. That’s remarkable given how the E93 M3 is soon to go out of production and that engine is now five years old.

Winning this category when you’re a five year old engine is like winning the Mr Universe contest when you’re a 50 year old.

Well done BMW.

The guys over at BMW seem to have forgotten what free time is and worked relentlessly with new announcements, new launches and so on.

Or so it seems, because though they promise a revolution in interiors and a whole new M Performance range, with the release of the 2013 BMW X6 facelift we start getting a little doubtful.

You see, they claim this is a facelift and we, from our biased point of view, tend to believe them but trust me, it’s very hard to spot the difference between the new and the old X6.

According to the official press release, the 2013 version of the most sporty of all the BMW SAVs, there’s quite a bit of retouching going on with the grilles, the fog light surrounds and the headlights.

Once you know what to look for, you find all this stuff out but until you do you almost certainly won’t be able to tell the difference of the situation.

The interior receives no changes but you do get a new color option for the leather and fittings. It’s quite the fancy “root beer metallic brown” – how German can you get.

Happily though, the 2013 BMW X6 does get a bit of work done in the engine department. The xDrive35i version now comes with 315 horsepower (15 were added) and 330 pound-feet of torque (30 more).

With the 2013 BMW X6 xDrive50i you now get a twin-turbo V8 which pushes out 440 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, making for a gain for 40, respectively 30.

The diesel isn’t left lagging behind the rest either, 245 hp on the xDrive30d and 306 hp on the xDrive40d. No extra changes are made here and nor are BMW going to be selling these powerplants in the U.S.

Over in hatchback land, BMW may have introduced a new version of the 1 Series, the F20, but there are certain omissions.

Those last few gaps have been filled up by these new additions the Bavarians have confirmed. We’re looking at more engines, including diesels and a M Sport package.

The new M Sport package features a new body kit, a lowered suspension (by 10 mm) and new alloy wheels in 17 or 18 inch sizes.

As with any M Sport package, the added value it provides is a little controversial. The new engine range has different talks on that front.

Only one new petrol engine is available and it is shoved under the bonnet of the 125i. It is a 2.0 liter turbocharged 220 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque.

Essential stats on it are 0 to 62 in 6.4 seconds, a top speed of 153 mph and it can still provide a decent fuel economy level of 35.7 mpg US.

Opening up the diesel front, the F20 BMW 125d gets a 2.0 liter turbo four pot with 220 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Figures are arranged in a different order of importance, there’s a fuel economy one of 48 mpg US, 6.5 seconds to get to 62 and a top speed of 149.

Marginally slower, but massively more economical, the 125d does seem very interesting but if efficiency is your thing, you need to look at the other diesel the one the F20 gets in the 116d.

It is a 1.6 litre turbo four with Efficient Dynamics written on top of it which delivers 118 horsepower, 192 lb-ft of torque, 0 to 62 in 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 121 mph.

The star figure at hand is the fuel economy which stands at 62 mpg US.

It may have been overtaken in terms of sales, growth and other areas, but Europe is still a very large market and quite the special one.

Apart from it being the true home of the Bavarians at BMW, it is also one of split opinions, large adoption of diesel and often unsure place to be.

In trying to keep it satisfied, BMW has just announced that they will be introducing a few more versions of their new F30 for Europe alone.

To begin with, there will be an F30 BMW 320i version. Sounds like a very drastic change but really isn’t. What you’re actually getting is the same engine as the 328i, that’s been de-tuned to offer less performance but better fuel economy and lower emissions.

The same 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine now serves up 184 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, but counters by offering 47.9 mpg UK worth of fuel economy on the EU cycle.

If that’s not enough, you can always turn to the diesel engined relatives of the BMW 3 Series. The 316d and 318d will be introduced as well and they both feature the same 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel four pot, albeit in different specs.

For the 316d, the offer stands at 116 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque and a combined fuel economy figure of 64.2 mpg UK. If you want the best of both worlds, you’ll need the 318d.

With that engine, the F30 BMW 3 Series offers up 143 horsepower, 236 lb-ft of torque and still returns 62.8 mpg UK.

The power of these engines is a farcry away from the originally introduced ones but, like I said, they’re not on the ideal market.
