Here we are back with Nokia`s HERE Maps service being recently purchased by the joint venture BMW, Audi and Daimler, for a whopping $3.1 billion, each one holding equal share in the mapping service.

In case you missed out the latest news, Nokia has had a hard bargain with other media mammoths like Facebook, asking around $ 4 billion for HERE mapping service, but finally closing the deal with the joint venture mentioned above.

The Nokia HERE maps will be the third major player on the infotainment market, competing against Google or Nokia, and providing mapping service and autonomous driving for about 200 countries.

Harald Kruger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW, stated in an interview that HERE will provide “high definition maps and data from vehicles to make travel safer and easier for everyone”, adding thus a greater value to the digtal revolutionary.

Google will have thus a tough competitor from HERE mapping services, especially since the later is holding around 80% of the navigation systems in Europe and North America, and still predicting to go higher, once it will close the deal at the beginning of 2016.

Nokia has made quite a buzz with its special HERE Maps program for the last couple of months, undetermined whether to let it go to BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler, but after intense and tough negotiations, the program ended up into the pocket of the three important players in the auto industry.

Thus, BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler acquired Nokia`s HERE Maps for a whopping $2.71 billion. The three players will offer the navigation system to other car makers, such as Renault, Ford, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Peugeot or Toyota, free of charge.

Nokia is quite on a tight spot and the $2.71 billion profit would make it rise from the ashes and develop other technologies that would satisfy the needs of other important carmakers.

On the other hand, the three major auto players will continue developing the HERE Maps navigation system and perhaps sell it to the highest bidders.

BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler are the lucky winners of the world`s most important navigation system, with Baidu, Facebook, Uber and Alibaba failing to purchase the program, due to the $4 billion asking price that Nokia pretended.

To connoisseurs, Daimler is a German multinational automotive corporation with Mercedes Benz in its portfolio. Knowing about the fierce competition for the first place on the market between Mercedes and BMW, one would have expected for Daimler boss to talk more about the brand it represents…

Even so, Dieter Zetsche, general director of Daimler, claims that they are not going to take the first place in terms of sales by the end of 2013, even though he is not sure that this will apply to BMW as well.

With other words, an official from the competitors’ bench expresses the belief that BMW will take the first place this year. We would add – this year, again, after BMW had the same position in 2011 and in 2012.

The rivals from the second place are having big plans to achieve by 2020 – meaning to finally overcome BMW in terms of sales, even though Bavarian Motors will not just sit back and wait to be outnumbered.

Even so, the markets are more or less stable these days, with car makers reporting excess capacity and low sales. How ill BMW and its German competitors sort things out will be interesting to see!

Meanwhile, BMW and Mercedes are not just fighting for sales, but also for supremacy on the luxury US auto market!
