With the now modern UKL1 MINI platform to be used on the fresh BMW models, the carmaker is also planning to use it on other models coming with front-wheel drive layout.

The BMW German based automaker is planning six models with FWD by 2017, in order to reduce costs, as opposed to the rear-wheel drive, which costs the company a lot of money.

The brand six models with FWD will also share a lot of power, as the models in question will be powered by three-cylinder turbocharged engines.

Some of the models are already announced, meaning the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer MPV, aimed at the Mercedes-Benz B Class, which will shortly be followed by the Family Tourer seven-seat MPV, in 2015.

Next, the BMW carmaker will ensure the evolution of its SUV and crossover lineup, with the next-gen X1 front-wheel to be launched in 2016, while a niche X2 coupe crossover is also planned.

Eventually, in 2017, the BMW automaker will launch on the same UKL1 MINI platform, the fresh new small BMW Z2 roadster, riding alongside the new-gen 1-Series hatchback.

The BMW German luxury automaker is planning to launch a new roadster, called Z2 in 2016, which will come with a front-wheel drive system.

BMW is already working on the entry-level Z2 Roadster and it will be that particular hot car that will complete the BMW`s model lineup, coming with affordable prices.

Since the car is rumored for some time now, the BMW Z2 Roadster will share the same front-wheel drive system also used on the 2014 MINI Cooper, becoming the second model with a front-wheel after the 2-Series Active Tourer.

More than that, it is also rumored that the future BMW Z2 Roadster will be also coming with an all-wheel drive system.
The BMW Z2 Roadster is said to compete against famous vehicles like the Mazda MX-5.

As for the engine lineup, we don’t know for sure what will the Z2 Roadster sport, but reports state that we might be talking about some small 3- and 4-cylinder petrol burners.

More details about the upcoming BMW Z2 Roadster will be offered at the time when the sports car will be officially announced.

There is no doubt that a new model bearing the Z badge will make its entrance in BMW’s range in the coming years, more exactly, a little brother for the current Z4 is scheduled to make its debut, somewhere in 2014 as the Germans from Auto Bild claim.

According to the same source, the new BMW Z2 will get a starting price of around €30,000 and is not designed to get the exact look of the current Z4 but smaller dimensions. In fact, they say that the new German roadster will be quite different compared to the current Z range in order to bring a fresh air and boost the sales.

As the new BMW Z2 has been spied just one time, almost a year ago, we can’t tell you for sure what are the main differences compared to Z4. In fact, many people claimed that the prototype spied in April 2010 is not really the upcoming Z2 roadster.

Due to these conditions, the renderings above are more or less accurate but if the rumors are correct, starting next year, we should have part of more details, spy photos and so on.

Word’s on the street that BMW would introduce a new Z2 concept at the Frankfurt Motor show in September. Although there were whispers that BMW abandoned the development of the Z2 as iMotor reported: “Everyone in the motoring media seems to be talking about this car but it’s not on my product plan and that lists the forthcoming models for the next 10 years” quoting its source, seems like BMW Z2 will have a BMW convertible top and will hit the market earlier.

According to AutoZeitung, BMW is working on the BMW Z2 roadster that will be based on the new 1-Series platform. Z2 roadster will have a soft-top that will fold into the trunk. Under the hood BMW is planning the 120hp 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine, and two turbocharged engines ranging from 175hp to 211hp.

Configured to allow front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, the Z2 is likely to feature the German automaker’s latest fuel-saving Efficient Dynamics technology, including a possible plug-in hybrid powertrain. Rumors say that BMW Z2 could get a sequential transmission borrowed from BMW’s high-end motorcycles. The BMW Z2 will weigh in at UNDER 1,000 kg, weight being kept low by using composite materials in key parts, while Active Aerodynamics (adjustable front spoiler and intake slats) should offer high downforce when necessary and low drag the rest of the time.
