After the official launch of the BMW 2-Series Gran Tourer at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, it was just a matter of time until the German carmaker would unveil the xDrive version of the gorgeous family car. We are now witnessing the presence of the long-expected BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer.

We are all aware of the strong personality and great qualities that the 2-Series Gran Tourer is coming with, but the 220d xDrive Gran Tourer is adding a few more in terms of safety reasons, powertrain under the hood, as well as driving dynamics and fuel efficiency.

First, the BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer completes the 2-Series lineup and complements it with the same characteristics in terms of design and size, the model standing at 4,556 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,608 mm high, offering a lot of space inside both for passengers as well as for their luggage. The overall cargo capacity, with the rear seats being folded, stands at a good 1,905 liters.

Still keeping the proportions inside, the 220d xDrive Gran Tourer comes with a lot of gizmos, a lot of them being oriented towards children`s fun and amusing, amongst which one stands out from the crowd: it is all about the “myKIDIO” application, available only in Germany for the moment, which gives children endless opportunities in terms of entertainment throughout a long journey – cartoons, educational films, audio and video books and other fun to learn materials.

Otherwise, the cabin of the BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer still keeps the high-class atmosphere, complemented by the M leather steering wheel, the M Sport seats, the M Aerodynamics package or the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line.

A long journey on heavy weather or road conditions requires a good and high-performance powertrain under the hood, and the BMW 220d xDrive makes the best of it: it comes equipped with five turbo engines with three- and four-cylinder configuration, all with the all-wheel drive system. But the best part comes right now: all of them are extremely fuel-efficient, coming with combined 6.4-3.9 L/100 km, while the combined CO2 emissions stand between 149 – 104 g/km. Add the BMW EfficientDynamics package and you will have the journey of your time with less fuel expenses.

The news with the planning of the BMW German based carmaker of introducing the xDrive configuration on the rest of the M models, have been circulating on the web for more than a week now, and now it is time to tell you more about what the xDrive system is all about. But perhaps little words will be needed, as a video launched earlier today does the whole trick.

The xDrive system configuration is the all-wheel drive layout which sends the torque surplus at the opposite axle whenever the car senses slipping danger on the wheels. When the danger is sensed and the car starts slipping, the multi-plate clutch, which is electronically controlled, takes the vehicle back to the track.

The all-wheel drive layout uses a traction system according to which 40% of drive is sent to the front wheels,with the rest of 60% being pushed to the rear wheels, while the engine functions at its full potential.

But what is more important to be noticed here, the xDrive configuration also comes with the Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Stability Control which allows the vehicle to spin into tight turns without losing control, as the system automatically brakes each wheel individually while also “cutting the power across the axle.”

BMW first started equipping its models with the xDrive back in 2010 on the BMW X5 and X6 M, following the 1-Series and the 3- and 4-Series a couple of years later, and right now its intentions also include equipping the M models with an all-wheel drive layout. The German folks at BMW announced that all the 2014MY vehicles within the range will benefit from several improvements including EU6 engines.

To be more specific, the BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol units will meet the EU6 regulations alongside the six-cylinder BMW Z4 versions and also all the M models.

On the other hand, BMW will try to offer the BluePerformance package as standard for diesel units, which also translates into EU6 compliance.

The 2014 BMW 118d, 318d (Sedan and Touring) fitted with the 141hp 2.0-liter unit and 335d model with 308hp 3.0-liter will receive the xDrive four-wheel drive system starting next year.

The well-known EfficientDynamics system gets also several improvements alongside the Eco Pro Mode which is also tweaked for better fuel consumption. Other improvements announced by BMW include a revised ConnectedDrive system, new Launch Control function for the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series and better equipment for the flagship models.

BMW officially announced that the new 3 Series Gran Turismo will be offered with four-wheel drive system in the UK.

Starting at £30,335, the xDrive system will be available only for the BMW 320i GT and adds £1,500 to the standard model. In the official press release, BMW says that their all-wheel drive system can prevent oversteer or understeer by sending torque only to the specific place where it is needed.

This will make the car more stable and safe but will also reduce the joy on track.

If the 320i version is not exactly what you want, BMW says that they are looking forward to expand the range with other versions equipped with xDrive. This should happen starting 2014 with the 2.0-liter diesel unit to be first on the list.

BMW announces the introduction of the xDrive all-wheel drive to the new generation 5 Series range and the launch of a M package for both body model variants. BMW announces a series of significant changes in the range, the main target being 1 Series models, the 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, Z4 and 5 Series GT.

The main news is the introduction of the xDrive all-wheel drive on the new generation 5 Series model, referred to the 550i and 535d diesel version with six-cylinder and 306 horsepower. BMW 5 Series GT Series isn’t forgotten, the xDrive will be found in the 550i and 530d versions. BMW 7 Series receives also the four-wheel drive xDrive on the the 740d.

Important news under the bonnet of 5 Series Touring, the wagon will receive the petrol and diesel units of 204 (525d) and 258 hp (528i). The diesel engine reaches 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds with an average consumption of 6 litres/100 km, while the gasoline one accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and promises a consumption of 8 litres/100 km.

BMW has announced the introduction of the xDrive intelligent all wheel drive systems on models that don’t have it available yet.

The list of models in cause includes the full 5 Series Gran Turismo range and the BMW 740d.

In the case of the BMW 5 Series GT the xDrive will be an option, starting June 2010, on all engines available for it, more specifically for the 3 liter diesel and the 4.4 liter petrol engine.

According to official BMW data, the 530d xDrive GT will do 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds, will continue on to 146 mph and will do these feats and eventually average an estimated 41 mpg with a CO2 rating of 183 g/km. As far as the BMW 55oi xDrive GT is concerned, things are a bit different as the sprint to 60 mph from a standstill will be over in 5.4 seconds. The same can be said for the top speed which will be electronically limited to 155 mph. The green data from this beast of a car turns in at around 24 mpg and produces 275 g/km of CO2.

If you may want to have some other options you’ll have to wait for September as that’ll be the release date for the 535i and 535d versions of the GT.

Around that period, the autumn, the BMW 740d will get this option of the xDrive so that it’s 306 horsepower turbo-diesel engine can get down to road better.
