We presented you few months ago, that BMW plans to introduce a restored model of the legendary BMW 328 Kamm Coupe, in order to celebrate 70 years since winning the Mille Miglia race in 1940. Here you can read more about what we wrote that time.

BMW presented few days ago on their official YouTube channel, a video where you can watch the model’s history but also what happened at the celebration event happened in April this year.

Manfred Grunert, spokesperson Heritage BMW Group, told us the historical details of this classic race model. For Manfred Grunert but I think for all of us, the BMW 328 Kamm Coupe is a “racing sports car that has made history”. This car has quite a long and important name, but then again it is quite a car. Or is it?

BMW have decided that it’s about time a limited edition was created to celebrate past successes at the infamous Mille Miglia race.

The celebratory limited edition will take the form of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is Mille Miglia and the reason why it’s coming out is that people should remember a certain race back in 1940 when a BMW 328 Kamm Coupe took first, third, fifth and sixth places at the Mille Miglia.

While that race and it’s outcome may have been an important achievement for BMW the Z4 special edition might not hit that same marker of success. Basically, the Z4 sDrive35is Mille Miglia will be a technically normal Z4 sDrive35is to which some interesting touches are added. These come in the form of a M Sport body kit, a set of spangling new 19 inch alloy wheels and a black grill. As far as the interior is concerned you’ll be getting some Alcantara and red stitching teamed with some Mille Miglia badges.

There is a catch to the special edition: only 99 BMW Z4 sDrive35is Mille Miglia will be built and all of them will be sold in Germany.

This rebirth of the BMW 328 Kamm Coupe has taken place to celebrate the 70th anniversary of BMW’s win at the Mille Miglia.

The original Kamm Coupe was only built in a single unit and eventually sometime in 1953 saw its last day in a scrap heap.

This exact replica of the car has been built by BMW classics themselves and it has had an amazingly troubled birth. The initial project started in 1990 but due to lack of proper engineering information on the car they couldn’t actually build it despite the years of research.

However a few years ago they got the sort of information they needed, including stuff on the car’s tubular frame construction from a private collector who had detailed photographs on almost all aspects of this car. All the images provided by the aficionado eventually wound up being converted into a 3D model that eventually went to a five axis machine that managed to cut a full size copy out of this BMW 328 Kamm Coupe.

The man behind BMW’s 328 Touring Coupé and Mille Miglia Roadster restorations, meticulously crafted an aluminum body and who then set to work on the under-body panels is named René Große.
