It’s been already known that BMW is working on a new front-wheel drive model designed to enter the market most likely by the end of 2013. The new entry-level German model is a five-door hatchback and today we face the first spy photos of the model in question. BMW’s new front-wheel drive model which is under development already caused some modifications in the range as the Germans recently trademarked the “M2” moniker both in Germany and the United States.

This decision has been taken in order to ensure that the future 1 Series generation will have a name, this is how the future 2 Series range will appear. Of course, the new front-wheel drive model will take the place of the current 1 Series range as its dimensions are slightly smaller than the 2012 BMW 1 Series, a model completely revealed yesterday.

According to the first details, BMW will develop a 2 Series hatchback, a Coupe version that most likely will be codenamed F22, a convertible variant known as F23 and of course the sportier version, M2. Don’t rush to think that the future 2 Series range will be unveiled too soon as the patent filing is not necessary announcing that the model is quite close to production or even development but however, the Germans need to have the trademarks before anyone else in order to avoid any conflicts.

Back to the new BMW FWD prototype spied for the first time, we have to tell you that the details are few, mainly considering the early stage of the development process. However, according to an older statement of Norbert Reithofe, BMW Chairman, the new BMW FWD model will share the same platform with the MINI model of the British subsidiary. Largely, these are the details on the new front-wheel drive model for now but expect to find more in the coming months as the upcoming model will be subjected to a large amount of tests from now. Recent trademarks registered at the Patent and Trademark Office reveals that the Bavarian manufacturer might develop 2 Series models. Nothing was confirmed yet but according to the filled trademarks, 228, 230 and 235, we can think just to a new range of small models.

Back in June, the German manufacturer registered another trademarks, but this time, for the M2 model. For now, we do not have many details on this news, but putting the 2 in front of the 28, 30 and 35 numbers means that a 2 Series range is coming and there are some possibilities for the future 2 Series range to have rear-wheel drive models.

Moreover, from the name of the registered models, 228, 230 and 235, we can see that the vehicles in question will benefit from the six-cylinder BMW engines. According to some rumors, we may see a BMW 2 Series model on the streets somewhere in 2015 but the German officials decided to keep silence regarding this subject for now.
