While there’s no shortage of pipeline products lying around BMW’s future lineup, one of their showcases at next year’s Detroit Motor Show will not be amazingly new.

In fact, it’s borderline boring to see the E82/E88 BMW 1 Series turn up but that’s what their doing. We’re going to see a limited edition run of that model.

The *erm* new model is to be called the Lifestyle Edition and treats the coupe and convertible versions individually.

The E82 Coupe gets a new exclusive metallic paint shade called Mineral White and it is available only with this and two other exterior colors (Sapphire Black metallic, Space Grey metallic).

While 18 inch wheels don’t sound this big anymore, let’s not forget what a small car we’re talking about here. Meanwhile, the E88 Convertible stands up to attention with different ideas.

The same exterior colors apply and there’s now a brown soft-top with silver pigmentation in the lineup but the interior receives most of the attention.

Inside the 1 Series Lifestyle Edition you get seats, steering wheel rim and door panels covered in brown leather trim with contrasting stitching done in white.

Other cute details come in the form of Fineline Stream wood for the dashboard, branded door sills and an anthracite-colored roof liner.

The Bavarians say the exhaust tailpipe embellishers are finished in matt chrome or black chrome and it sounds amazing. Maybe that’s because “chrome exhaust tips” was an over-used term.

In what’s likely to be one of the last few contacts we get with the previous generation 1 Series before the F20-like 2 Series comes along.

Those unlucky Americans, particularly those living in the United States there of, they’ll never have the chance to buy one of the F20 M135i models.

In order to compensate for this unfortunate situation, BMW will be selling them either of these; a 135is Coupe or a 135is Convertible.

The only thing is that they don’t look like a brand new F20 1 Series but the older E82/E88 generation. The reason is quite simple, the newer version is not ready.

In the United States at America there’s no hatchback version of the 1 Series, only the coupes and convertibles are available and there’s quite a following of the 1 Series M Coupe.

Getting back to the new releases, both the drop top and the two door coupe are powered by the same newly refreshed 3.0 liter straight six cylinder engine.

We’re looking at the TwinPower Turbo side of 317 pound-feet of torque here and they come along side a neatly packed 320 horsepower.

That’s a bump of 20 horsepower and 17 lb-ft of torque over the previous generation and, of course, you’ll be able to specify it with the newly introduced M Performance parts soon.

Even without those, the BMW 135i is quite the great handling machine. It gets a revised sport suspension as standard, new 18 inch alloy wheels with a fresh set of tires to make for more grip.

Excluding the $895 destination charges, BMW will put you in a 135is if you’ll pay a starting price of $44.195 for the coupe and $44.895 for the convertible.

Egypt hasn’t really made that much of a contribution to the tuning scene. That’s about to change and they’ve decided to start with BMW.

Weirdly, it’s not a BMW model you’d expect to be tuned into some ferocious beast but a rather sensible E82 1 Series that’s powered by the diesel engine.

“hatembmw” a member of the 1addicts forum wasn’t really pleased with the final price of the BMW 1 Series M so he decided to make one himself.

His problem wasn’t with what BMW is charging for the 1 Series M Coupe but with the taxes the Egyptian government slaps on top.

In order to avoid paying some 150.000 USD for the very fun little car, he decided to spend his money on creating something unique.

He went out and ripped the 2.0 liter turbo-diesel engine out of the body and put instead a properly high performance engine.

It isn’t to be the 3.0 liter inline six cylinder TwinTurbo of the 1 Series M Coupe but one that’s easier to get round in his country.

That’ll be the 4.0 liter V8 which develops 420 horsepower, all of which are available reasonably quick since there’s no turbocharging to consider.

Alongside the BMW M3 boosted performance, the overnight tuner decided to fit the appropriately widened body kit, suspension components and braking bits.

Even after all that work and adding in of all that BMW greatness, the Egyptian came out some 50.000 dollars SHORT of the regularly taxed price of a 1 Series M Coupe.

Now that’s more than impressive.

Finally there’s an end to all the rumors, guesses and estimates on the faith of the M badged version of the BMW 1 Series.

The confirmation came from Dr. Kay Segler, BMW M GmbH’s Managing Director and it took place in an interview given to German online magazine “Auto-News”.

It would seem than that all those spyshots of the BMW 1 Series prototype seen around the Nurburgring lots and lots of times and which had been rumored to be an M version of the BMW 1 Series E82 Coupe.

As to be expected, this model will not be sporting the M1 badge as that belongs only on the original M car and nothing else. Most likely it’ll be the 135i M or something of sorts but Segler did say that the car will be hitting the market around the second quarter of 2011. The production will be quite limited to start with.

While Mr. Segler wasn’t very generous with details this is still a set of good news that will probably fuel M fanatics and fans of the E82 until the car is actually available. One of the biggest sources for debate concerning this BMW will be what engine is going to power it. Most would say (same people who rumor the 135i M name) that it will be an upgraded version of the BMW 135i’s 3 liter turbocharged straight six engine.

No owner of the E82/E88 BMW 135i bought that car because it was slow but, as always, somebody came up with the idea of giving it more power.

The culprits this time come from Great Britain and are maned Superchips Ltd.

What they did is pretty much self explanatory within the title, they remapped the 135i’s ECU in order to achieve more brute force figures.

So, whereas in the standard car your 3 liter straight six twin turbocharged engine develops 311 horsepower the new chip map will raise the output to a more rounded figure of 360 horsepower. Pretty much same story with the torque delivery of the car as you now get 456 Nm at just 3359 rpm compared to the “old” 394 Nm of the basic engine.

Your Superchips remapped ECU will now take your E82/E88 BMW 135i from 0 to 60 mph in around 5.3 seconds and top speed is still the 155 mph we are used to from the Germans but the car will be getting there faster due to the extra torque.

Pricing for the ECU remap of the 135i is, in the UK, £445.00 including VAT (17.5%) and the upgrade will be available through 100 dealerships around the country.
