Bavarians from BMW could collaborate with Alfa Romeo to develop future MINI platform. This collaboration will exist together with a partnership signed with PSA. BMW examines the possibility of cooperation with Fiat Group to use common components for Mini and Alfa Romeo models for cost savings.
In exchange for aid, those from BMW will help Italian manufacturer Fiat to launch the Alfa Romeo brand in the market of America North. According to the plan of Sergio Marchionne, Fiat had to bring the Alfa Romeo brand in the U.S. market somewhere between 2010 and 2011.
Both BMW and Fiat have held discussions with those from Daimler on developing small class models. Negotiations by the three manufacturers have had no result. If those from BMW and Fiat could seal a contract, the future MINI could use the same architecture with the current Alfa Romeo MiTo. Next-generation Mini is expected to appear on the market over five years. The collaboration between BMW and Alfa Romeo will be extended to engine development, people at BMW are already having a contract with PSA. More specifically, the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine from Mini Cooper S is used on Peugeot 207. Collaboration between Peugeot and BMW could be extended, but they will not share platforms in the near future.
