Platform for future models Mini could be developed in collaboration with specialists from PSA. Also, the third generation of the BMW 1-Series might have front-drive. The partnership between BMW and PSA group could be expanded from 1.6-liter supercharged engine to new platforms for small class cars.
The new platform will be used on future MINI range and could reach and also on the Citroen C3 and C4, and the next Peugeot 308 and 208. So, it is possible for BMW to launch a front-wheel-drive model in 2018. The model will be the third generation of the 1-Series and will share the first part of chassis with future MINI models.
PSA models will use the same platform, the only technique difference between this and those created by BMW Group is located in the rear, which will use a Multilink suspension, as in the case of the current MINI. For now, BMW engineers are still analyzing different solutions to improve the efficiency of its models, but the transition to a configuration with the engine placed in front and front-wheel drive remains the only way forward for future models of the German manufacturer.
