200,000 BMW vehicles recalled over problem with front passenger air bag
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) website, 200,000 units of BMW 2006 3 Series, 2004-2006 5 Series and 2004-2006 X3 SUVs, though only those equipped with sport seats, are being recalled in order to repair potentially faulty air bag sensors.
The problem with which BMW is being confronted seems to be with the front passenger sport seat, whose covering develops a crack as time goes by. This can cause damage to an air bag sensor beneath the covering, therefore the car doesn’t sense the passenger’s weight anymore and, in case of an accident, the passenger airbag may not be deployed. Even though so far there haven’t been any accidents or incidents related to this issue, BMW is being cautious and doing the right thing by taking care of it as soon as it appeared. Moreover, BMW will extend the warranties of several of its models so that it covers the issue for 10 years with no mileage restrictions.
